What people are saying
It is a beautiful, airy square, full of trees and benches, where to enjoy the fresh air of the good shady afternoons

We had seen it many years ago. For a mistake in the connections of trams and buses, by chance we found ourselves very close to the square and we decided to see it as it is now. The square, formerly known as Piazza Mastro Giorgio, came to life by popular will around 1900, to curb the urbanization of the area. In the same year, the Committee for the economic and moral improvement of Testaccio obtained the assignment of a dirt and non-building lot on which the square was created. For many years, Piazza Testaccio was the commercial heart of the district and home to one of the historic local markets of the capital, which today is located in via Galvani. In 1926, the Fountain of the Amphorae, created by Pietro Lombardi, was placed in the center of the square of the populous working-class district. Soon, however, due to problems related to the collapse of the ground below, the Municipality of Rome decided to carry out consolidation works and, in 1935, to preserve it, they had the fountain transferred to Piazza dell'Emporio. In 2015, following the complete restyling of the square with new pavement and new urban furnishings that made the space usable for citizens, the fountain was restored to its original location. It is a beautiful, large, airy square, full of trees and benches, where old people and children can sit and enjoy the fresh air of the good shady afternoons.

The area

Neighbourhood: Testaccio
Put the house music on replay and you have Testaccio, an ancient Roman port and former working class neighbourhood where the bass is set to high almost every night of the week. Its collection of discoteche (nightclubs), street parties, and crowded restaurants give it its well-deserved party reputation. During the daytime, Testaccio is more easy listening than club hit, the area is full of locally owned small businesses and has one of the city's larger produce markets.

This is a pleasant, neighborhood piazza, which I went through as I was visiting a local craft beer place. In the center is an interesting fountain, the Fontana delle Anfore (Fountain of the Amphorae), which is in honor of the Testaccio monument Monte Testaccio, a man-made mountain built of stacked clay amphorae sherds. In addition, it is a nod back to when Testaccio was a center of commerce in ancient Rome. The fountain dates from 1927 and was created by Pietro Lombardi, who was commissioned to create a series of fountains for different neighborhoods of the city. Many of those wonderful little fountains stand today and they all reflect something about their neighborhoods. The Fountain of the Amphorae stood here originally, but was moved to another piazza in the 1930's. It was returned to this piazza, it's original home, only recently.

Enough tourist sights? Looking to find a place where the locals hang out? The Testaccio neighbourhood delivers. Best metro stop: Piramide, and walk north into a truly local neighbourhood. Have a coffee and a delicious pastry at Barberini, a lively coffee bar always full of locals, then go a few doors further to Volpetti for cheese sampling, hams, and perhaps a suppli (stuffed rice ball) or a slice of pizza. Or go around the corner to their little restaurant, Volpetti Piu, for a sit-down lunch with pizza and salads. Sit at the Piazza Testaccio for your picnic and watch the locals hang out with you. In the mood for ice cream? Don't miss Giolitti, which has the best gelato in Rome (there is a bigger location of it closer to the Pantheon, which is so crowded. This one is a bit harder to find, but you won't regret it). And if you have more time - there is the Testaccio Food Market, a cemetery, a pyramid, churches,....what a great little area!

Getting away from all the big tourist attractions will allow you to discover many wonderful things that make Rome special. The Testaccio neighborhood fits the bill nicely, and the this piazza is a great place to relax and enjoy the slower pace without tourists everywhere you look.

This urban square used to be the local marketplace but this has been replaced by an excellent market only a few hundred meters away.

We came to the Piazza primarily for gelato but it is a typical local square with lots of locals going about their business, banking, grocery shopping and talking.

A lovery fountain in the centre and tree lined, it is a little window into a "real" roman neighbourhood.

Nearest Metro station in Piramide.

What once was an old marketplace has been replaced with a beautiful piazza edged with trees, in the centre of the piazza is the Fountain of Amphorae which references the abundance of amphorae which accumulated through trade in Testaccio. In the surrounding streets to the piazza there are cafes, delis and more, as well as it being a short walk away from the New Mercato Testaccio, must to visit when in Testaccio. The nearest metro is Piramide.

This beautiful Roman Piazza is the real deal,a proper neighbourhood piazza were you will see locals going about their normal lives and enjoying the streets and area that make up this piazza.
The square is large with a nice fountain as it's centrepiece and surrounded by nice architecture.
There are some great restaurants and bars here ,we visited Oasi Dell Birra were we enjoyed some great craft beers and there are some great restaurants such as Il Cantinone ,all offer an authentic slice of true Roman life.
Piazza Testaccio is relatively easy to find by jumping tram number 3 or 8 to stop Marmorata/Galvani were you walk down Via Marmorata and cut down Via Aldo Manuzio which brings you onto the piazza.
Well worth checking out..
