The area
Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beware of CAFE ARTE ITALIANA on via della Conciliazione near the Vatican. Off hand service, pushy for tips and extremely expensive. 2 x coffee, two single potions of apple tart. €42! €6.12 service charge
move on, plenty of good cafes in the same district.

The Vatican is visible from many places in Rome. However, the best view of it is the Basilica of St. Peter, just on via della Conciliazione. It is a wide street, mostly closed to car traffic, which in a practically straight line connects the castle of St. Angela together with the Vatican. A wonderful view, a wide street, even a promenade, perfect for a walk and admiration.

We stayed close to Vatican City, so used this busy street almost every day. Great cut through to the Castel Sant Angelo and the bridges leading into the city. Some nice shops, not too expensive and a great view of the basilica even walking up it.

This is the major street in the Borgo which runs from St. Peter’s Basilica to Castel Sant’Angelo and the Tiber river. The road was constructed between 1936 and 1950, when Mussolini, unfortunately, destroyed large sections of the area in front of St. Peter’s. The street is always busy, but provides a great view of the Vatican.

Via della Conciliazione is the best way to approach St Peters and the Vatican. We walked along this wide thoroughfare and the closer we got, the larger St Peter’s loomed - it was an amazing sight.
From the central Rome, we crossed Pont Sant Angelo, (probably Rome’s most beautiful bridge) and turned left in front of Castel Sant Angelo where we caught our first glimpse of St Peter’s in the distance, right at the end of Via Conciliazione.
Interestingly, the street looks as straight as a dart but in fact, the buildings on either side jut out at different points and don’t really line up very well at all. Traffic islands on both sides and rows of stone obelisk lampposts create a neat trick of making it look like a dead straight road.
Although the traffic can be heavy, the pavements on both sides are wide.

Via della Conciliazione is an important and significant road, and one with a lot of history, much of it modern. It is the road leading to and in front of Saint Peter's Basilica, in the Vatican. You get some really great views along this road. The best view is, I think of Saint Peter's Basilica, as you walk towards the great church. This is a view not to be missed.

Do not use this service. I cashed $1,300 at the rate shown (a very attractive rate) but was only given €676.30. I questioned this and was told that there was a commission fee of 19.90% of the transaction. I then said that i had changed my mind and please cancel the transaction only to be told that it was too late. $259 for a currency exchange is an absolute rip off.

This is one of the most popular streets in Europe, which is commonly shown on TV and in movies. This is the picturesque road to St Peter square.

Don't ever eat in the restaurant named "Caffe'", Via della Conciliazione 4F (angle with Via della Traspontina)! You will get small portions and not tasty food for very high prices, no service at all, but you will pay extra money for the "service" included (from 5 euro!). No Wi Fi in the restaurant, no oil, vinegar, salt and paper on the tables, and if you ask them for cheese for your pasta they will bring it, sift it a bit and take away back! What a shame!

Nous y avons été fin décembre et le parking y était très compliqué car l'avenue est rendue "piétonnière" (eu égard aux mesures de sécurité imposées par Rome). Le plus simple est de s'y rendre en taxi, voire en métro.
