- Kim DNorwich, United Kingdom94 contributionsNot as creepy as you'd thinkOne of the quietest sites we visited but also possibly the most interesting. The ticket included an audio guide so you can go round the museum at your own pace. This nicely prepares you for the Crypt, including explaining about the Capuchin order and the meaning of the burial site. The Crypt itself is six small rooms, five of which are filled with bones and mummified monks. The result isn't as creepy as you would expect and is actually quite moving, but there are almost four thousand monks on display - visitors should be aware as it could make some uncomfortable. Site has pleasant staff, WC facilities and a small gift shop. They do cater to children as there is a separate audio guide for young visitors, but no one in our party listened to this so can't vouch for quality.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2023
- Laurel MCalgary, Canada843 contributionsInteresting to learn about the Capuchin friars but I found the bones rather disturbingOne of us (not me) is fascinated by this type of thing. The headset as you walk through the small museum is quite informative in a story telling way. The crypts - if I looked at the layout of the bones as art it was Ok. But thinking how these were actual people at one time and now their bones are decorating the walls, well, I found it a bit off-putting.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 September 2023
- Rudy BOcean City, Maryland1,083 contributionsMost Interesting Exhibits I Visited in RomeOne of the most interesting, macabre, nerve striking places I’ve visited. The museum hosts an original Michelangelo painting that very detailed and beautifully done. They give you an audio player so you can do a self guided tour. I thought the narrations were okay - it’s styled as if the narrator is having a conversation with someone. I found it distracting and would have preferred just the facts about what was on display. Once you make your way through the gallery, you will enter the crypt. The crypt took me by surprise because I was not expecting to see thousands of bones used as artwork or incorporated into the structure of the crypt. That was a Lille unnerving and I’m still not sure how I feel about that. I’m glad I went, but wished I read beforehand so my mind was expecting what I saw. Otherwise, it was the most interesting part of the exhibit. I highly recommend visiting here, but I don’t think I’ll go again - definitely once was enough. Seeing the bones in person made it more real that what you see in a book. Essentially knowing these are real people. Also, dress appropriately because they will ask you to buy something to cover your shoulders and thighs. They sold a wraparound for about 1 eur.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- Karim MaaroufCairo, Egypt872 contributionsInteresting but somewhat creepy placeThe museum of the order of the Capuchin monks is pretty interesting. You get an audio guide which provides some information about the history of this order and some of the exhibits on display. The main attraction is of course the crypt which consists of about seven displays made with the bones of deceased monks. The audio guide describes these displays as serene and somehow artistic. I found them to be quite shocking but still interesting. Just be aware that you can't take pictures in the crypt.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 October 2023
- angeleyes27Brigantine, New Jersey5,334 contributionsSmall but uniqueThis is very easy to do on your own. You don’t need a tour. Just take the metro to Barberini and walk a block away. You can save the money by going without a tour. No pictures are allowed. It takes about 20 minutes to do the whole thing. There are museum exhibits and then the crypts with the bones. Once is enough for me.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- ZuzaAntwerp, Belgium6 contributionsWeird but worth to check outIt's cretrainly worth the visit, but probably not on your first trip to Rome and not if you only have 3 days. It's so weird to see that it's hard to be spooked by it or try to focus on the deeper meaning. I mean, how did anybody ever think to make floral decorations from human pelvis? My son of 10 didn't find it scary or creepy at all, but might be a bit too much for younder children.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 November 2023
- Caesar MSouth Bend, Indiana7 contributionsProbably not for everyone, but extremely worthwhileIt took some convincing for me to get my wife to agree to take our family here. Very glad we did. It is probably not for everyone's taste, but the crypts were truly striking. Beautiful and captivating. Left a definite impression.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2024
- KirJohannesburg, South Africa314 contributionsIncredible!I last visited the Capuchin Crypt 11 years ago. Went back again now and was still so amazed by the artworks created by human bones. The museum is also very informative and well worth a visit when in Rome. Remember to cover up your knees and shoulders when entering. Alternatively you can purchase a poncho there too.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 January 2024
- KelsieSouth Wales, United Kingdom103 contributionsInteresting and worth a visit xWe visited during our stay in Rome last week and although I had read about it it was quite different to what I’d expected. I don’t know why but I assumed what I was going to be seeing would be underground in some kind of dark narrow chambers but this wasn’t the case. It was a very different experience and extremely interesting. Both myself and my husband stood for ages looking at the displays and trying to take it all in. We didn’t book in advance and payed on arrival with no queuing, it was very quiet. XVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 January 2024
- White RockWhite Rock, Canada67 contributionsReflective and memorable… “What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be.”This was probably the main highlight in all our visits to Rome over the last few years. Not sure why we didn’t visited this place earlier. Each display was artistic and holy rather than morbid. The visit will probably be ingrained in my mind for a long time…an experience that I will not forget. Not your usual tourist attraction, and perhaps not very appropriate and appealing for kids.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024

Wow! If you go to Rome, make sure you don’t miss this!
I’d advise booking online with a guide, it’s more pricey but really worth the money. Our guide was great, really informative and funny. Amazing experience, really interesting stories and very impressive bone art.

This is an interesting place to visit if you can fit it into your trip. I am glad that we made time for it as I have not been anywhere similar to the crypt before. We did not buy our tickets in advance but there was very little wait to get in. We visited late morning midweek and did not find it very crowded there. Your entrance fee provides an audio guide, although most of the exhibits are also well marked. You first go through a museum about the order of the Capuchin monks and then down into the crypt. There are only a few rooms in the crypt, but they make quite an impact. Although you can take pictures in the museum, they ask that you do not take photos while in the crypt given that it is a resting place for over 3000 monks. There is a gift shop right before the exit and bathrooms inside.

One of the places I'd always wanted to see was a proper ossuary and the Capuchin Crypt was nearby so we paid it a visit. After checking vaccinations and temperature we were allowed in, firstly to the museum. This had some interesting details about the order extending to their current activities today. The main attraction was the crypt but it was incredibly frustrating not to be allowed to take photos and I don't understand why. Some churches charge extra for a photography pass which is fine as it gets them more cash but this was just a ban. The bones were laid out on fantastic patterns and designs and some of the bodies appeared to still have mummified skin on them. But you won't know unless you look up pictures online as I have none to share!

You first enter a museum about the capuchin monks which seems promising but after a while gets a little tedious. We bought the audio tour and entrance ticket for 10 euros and the main attraction (the crypt) had no audio explanation with it which was the main attraction for the visit causing the audio guide to be a little pointless for us. There was lots of information on the capuchin lifestyle and what they did but little explanation as to why the crypts were the way they were. The crypts themselves are most unusual and felt a little uncomfortable seeing so many bones used in a decorative way. Definitely a different and unique attraction to see but not for everyone.

This was recommended to us by our Colosseum tour guide and I'm really glad we went. For €10 you can get entry and a headset which explains the items to you (with some very good voice acting). First you go through the museum about the Capuchins and you learn about their history. There are great paintings and artefacts along the way. Then you head down into the crypt itself. The walls and ceilings are adorned with skeletons and bones. The atmosphere is not scary but is sombre and calm.

Like others have mentioned, the staff was extremely rude, pushing my partner and I through when we still had time before closing, claiming we wouldn’t have time to listen to the rest of the audio for the part of the museum we were interested in - the crypts - and that we might as well leave. They also closed the gift shop early.
I knew wearing shorts and a tank top would require a cover, and they provided one (for €1). Since it was over 30 degrees outside and not much better inside, I was pulling the cover up. A staff member comes around the corner and rudely asks me to cover my knees, obviously having been watching through security cameras. I understand the importance of covering whilst inside the crypt, but if we were forced to go through this long museum (with a nice but long audio guide) the least they could do is crank the AC in summertime. The museum itself is nice, although as others have suggested, there are nicer ones in Rome, but the staff made it a very uncomfortable and negative experience. Such a shame.

Well worth a visit. The bone art is amazing & very beautiful. The museum of the capuchins had some very interesting objects as well. The ancient manuscripts were beautiful. Unlike most museums we went to in Italy, the audio guide was included in the entry fee. We had deleted the email with our tickets, but the museum had them in their records & let us in with no hassle.

This was something extraordinary, weird and if I’m honest, somewhat bizarre! While a spectacle I’m not sure whether I actually enjoyed it. The museum has some interest, understanding a little more about the background to the order and its monks had value, but the underground crypt was somewhat macabre and odd. I guess some will be fascinated, but I can’t say I was one of them.

After being disappointed by the catacombs lack of skeletons, this place more than made up for it. You will be amazed at the artful reverence these men had for their fallen brothers as shown in how they presented their remains. In addition to the bone displays, the informative part of the museum is full of well presented information.
Definitely go to this museum.

They provide you with an audioguide included in the price of €10, you can go at your own pace. There's a museum which provides the history of the monks at the beginning. This leads you to the corridor which has 4/5 rooms/alcoves with all the bones of the monks arranged in patterns. There are also some mummified remains of a few monks. You are not allowed to take photographs inside. It's quite a small site so it doesn't take long to go round. I would avoid going at opening time (10am) as it was quite busy, There wasn't any queue at all by the time I exited at about 11am. The entrance is up the stairs in front of the church.

Grazie

Hi,
arriving in early june 2019.
how do i buy tickets for this place / should i buy in advance or is it possible to buy on spot at the same day?
Written 27 May 2019
I just arrived and paid at the door. No queue's in April, and we were there just after Easter.
Written 4 August 2019
Is this crowded in June? I can't find a way to make reservations on the web site. How long are the lines in summer? Thanks!

You can book this tour on Viator and print from home, even though you may use the app, you may not have cell service, so I highly recommend printing from home before you leave. It will give you directions on where to meet the tour. I book all of our tours on Viator and we have never had any issues and have always had a wonderful guide. June is a hot time in Rome, so it is a nice cool break to go down into the crypts.

Could someone please tell me if children pay to get in please. I no in some museums they are free.
Thanks in advance

Hi, Is the only way to visit this is by going there and buying an entry ticket in person? Anyone remember the costs of add-ons like audio guides? Was there a wait, and was it easy to access? Thanks in advance.
Written 5 April 2018
You don’t need to book in advance - no queues, this is a reasonably less well known museum. I cannot recall if there’s audio guide.
Written 10 April 2018
can anyone tell me if this is open tomorrow (easter sunday)? if so the times
Written 31 March 2018
Hmm - gut feeling is no, after all Rome is probably one of the most religious places on earth!
If you’re staying at a hotel, I’d ask the concierge to check for you.
