Bernini's masterpiece "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" alone makes this small church a "must see"! A short walk from Roma Termini a couple blocks past Piazza delle Repubblica to this corner church just a few yards beyond Fontana dell'Acqua Felice. The overall quality of this church's artworks proves the adage that "big things come in small packages". Bring some half... More

The artwork in the Santa Maria Vittoria is just breath taking. This is one of the smaller churches and I strongly recommend you find this Church, sit down and stare in wonder at the fantastic Art work.

Santa Maria della Vittoria is a small church found next to the public baths of Diocletian. It is really a pearl of the baroque art along with the Chiesa di Gesu. The ecstacy of St Teresa of Avila by Bernini remains a master work of this 17th century architect.

We visited this church on November 13th. The closest Metro stop is Repubblica. It is one of the churches of the movie Angels & Demons. It is not a big church. The main piece is the sculpture known as The Ecstasy of St. Teresa made by Bernini. If you want to have light on the sculpture you have to put... More

This is not the easiest church to find, and we stumbled onto it during one of our rambling walks. Wow. The gold work is incredible, as are the side altars filled with notable art work, including "The Ecstasy of Teresa of Avila" by Bernini. I and my husband truly appreciated the good signage in a variety of languages. A lot... More

A small church but nice and beautiful inside. My boyfriend felt sick while being in the church, doubting he's actually a demon? :-p

This small baroque church is only 10 minutes from metro Berberini, and 10 minutes from the main train station and is worth visiting. Firstly, it's baroque ceiling is gorgeous, and the Bernini statues are STUNNING!!!!!!!!! What I rarely see mentioned however (and it's not mentioned in the church), is that the glass tomb which houses a statue of a lady... More

A church always famous for the fabulous Bernini sculpture of the "Ecstasy of St Therese, became know in popular culture for trial by fire in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons. The Bernini masterpiece features the fires of passion as St. Theresa is pierced by the arrows of the angel, a nod to her finding of religion in her biography. It... More

This church is mainly known for its masterpiece by Bernini-The Ecstasy of St. Teresa of Avila (1515-82), dedicated in 1605. The sculpture depicts the saint's actual description of one of her visions. The rest of the church is also interesting as it is small and dark with heavy baroque ornamentation.

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
