This church was under construction, but is incredibly unique in its design. We sang here with our church choir, and it was hard to concentrate because it was so cold, and under construction. It does have bathrooms, but they're not maintained well....so if you have...More

We visited (and reviewed in 2008) and loved this church although the (gruesome frescos were being restored then). Since then we'd seen the pictures on TA but not read the reviews. The pictures on TA are wonderful (and what we expected) compared to what you...More

Just 10-15 mins uphill walk from the Colosseum (bus 81 stops outside) this quiet church has a striking circular layout. Unfortunately the friezes that decorate the interior wall, for which the church is most well known, are currently being restored. Copies have been hung in...More

Located in a narrow street five minutes walk from the Colosseum, is in my opinion one of the most peculiar churches in Rome. The circular plant and the recently restored structure give the visitor a sense of peace and relaxation.

The only round church we saw in Rome. It was hard to get there from the San Giovanni in Laterano, as there is no proper pedestrian walkway. Nevertheless, the rotunda is gorgeous, the murals are very impressive. The church is vary old - the first...More

We didn't know where we were heading and only heard great reviews. Once we entered, it was a gorgeous dome church that was a beautiful sight to see. Then we looked at the art on the walls. This was unexpected. Please note that I personally...More

This round church honouring St. Stephen is very interesting. Apart from the more modern central altar and lighting, the outer walls are a circle of 34 frescoes showing differing tortures and deaths of these saints. No charge for visiting this church, and visiting during May...More

Santo Stefano Rotondo is my favourite church. It is highly unusual. For starters, as the name suggests, it is round. It is also really ancient, even by the standards of Rome. I like the frescos of the early martyrs that were meant to edify the...More

I love dark stuff and the frescoes in the church (somewhat hard to find) are graphic depictions of the martyrdom of saints. The gore of their deaths is not whitewashed; you see it in all its horror which is actually refreshing after so many cautious,...More

Very ancient and unusual circular church, known for its rather gory depictions of saints being martyred ... Saint Stephen is being stoned to death, St. Peter is being crucified upside down, people being beaten, decapitated, boiled alive, thrown to the lions ... each scene has...More

Hi - as far as I remember the main Rotondo is flat and wheelchair accessible - I dont recollect any staircase anyway, may be couple of steps at the front porch. Make sure you know the route before starting out - it took us... More
