Great place to take a walk, see the views of the city and get away from the crowds. We are here for Christmas and this has always been one of my favorite walks. The orange groves, stopping into the Dominican church and gardens, and looking through the keyhole at the knights of Malta. All of it free and if you... More

When in Rome, you must. This is talked about a lot, but you have to go there to have that look. Once up the hill, you will see a long queue and at the end a door, or The keyhole, yes this is looking through the keyhole, to view Saint Peters, you have to do it to say you have.... More

We stumbled onto this courtyard while looking for Circus Maximus (it was at the other end of the block) and ran into a couple looking for the Knights of Malta keyhole, and thought we would check it out too. Such an amazing view of the dome of St. Peter's through a private garden. This was not something on our list... More

Colle Aventino/Aventine Hill is a lovely quiet spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy Rome. While a lot of people come here for that elusive perfect photo through the Aventine Keyhole, (have to come back, wasn’t happy with mine), there is so much more, up here on offer. The following are some of the things to... More

Do not make a special trip, but atop Aventine Hill and a minutes walk from the garden of oranges, is a gate with a keyhole. You can't miss it for the queue! If you can spare 15 minutes to queue it's worth it as the view through the keyhole is so unique. It's a spectacular view of Saint Peters!

We showed up for the keyhole at around 3:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon. There was a very long line, (see photo), that took us about 25 minutes to get through. (In the pre-smartphone days, I would guess this to have been a 10-15 minute line, tops, but given the smartphones, every stinking person was taking and checking several photos... More

Came up and enjoyed the rose garden, the park, and this unique sight. It's not far from Circus Maximus but it is a fairly steep walk up.

There was a lovely view of the Vatican through the famous keyhole and is remarkably quiet compared to the numerous other attractions across Rome. Because it was so quiet we made the most of it and ate ice cream whilst enjoying the views from the gardens next to the church. The downside is that this appears to be where a... More

Me and my friends visited Roma and this small hole was our dream. And YES! It was sooooo small and sooooo beautiful! Sometime the smallest things are the best in our life :)

Staying in Aventine

Neighbourhood Profile
Aventine
Contrary to the chaos of the city, the Aventine is Rome’s oasis. A neighbourhood made up of a patchwork of ancient churches, hidden gardens, private homes and embassies, peace and quiet is top priority and the vibe definitely friends and family. Take a walk around the Aventine and you’ll find a treasure hunt of surprises like the clever little keyhole at the Knights of Malta entrance (the only place you’ll find a line) along with Parco Savello (Giardino degli Aranci) next to the ancient Santa Sabina church. Keep your eyes on the 1960s architecture, several modern buildings are built atop Rome’s original 4th century BC wall.
