Rome is rammed full of beautiful churches, each of which appear to try and outdo it's nearest neighbours with beautifully ornate facades. This church, built on the site of the first Christian church in Rome, is relatively plain on the outside but stunningly beautiful on the inside. Very much worth a detour.

The mosaics are breathtaking and awe inspiring. The church is easy to find in the Trastevere neighborhood. I was awe inspired by the mosaics. Even if you are not a lover of mosaics and visit this church, you will become one!

Absolutely magnificent but I don' want to spoil the impression when you walk in.Like so many Basilica the outside is just a green wooden door and you do not expect to see what you do. Beautiful with so much history.

This along with so many others in Rome is so visually incredible. It is worth seeing and experiencing. We walked the city and found this easily and enjoyed it.

We visited on a wet and cold day in Jan, so it was a shelter from the elements. Beautiful inside and definitely worth the walk to find and visit.

We visited this church and the entire neighborhood of Trastevere with the help of Rick Steves' excellent--and free--Audio Europe App. Download it and listen (or read it) on your phone as you meander the ancient streets. Then, when you arrive, you will enjoy it all the more as you know more about what you see. You can also appreciate it... More

We sat down to rest outside this church, and went inside on a bit of a whim. We were blown away. This site has been a continuous Christian site of worship since 313, but the 12th century remodel was beautiful. The ceiling, the floors, the columns -- spectacular!

shiny gold paintings, preserved well, very beautiful church! away from chaos, less crowded. One should be here early morning, have breakfast in Trastevere and then from here to piazza Navona through Jewish Ghetto and farmers market!

Santa Maria in Trastevere really is a must-see when in Rome. If you are taking a walk around picturesque Trastevere (and you should!) then just pop in to see tue beautiful mosaics.

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
