This may be the most beautiful church in Rome. Unassuming outside but incredible wall mosaics inside behind alter. ensure you feed the coin operated light machine to light up the mosaics - or better still, visit during a service or as I did during a school choir practice - magic!

Since we were at the Piazza, and therefore the church, so frequently, we went in one evening. It really is impressive. I read that there was music there every evening at 8:30 but unfortunately didn't get a chance to be there then.

Trastevere is well worth crossing the Tiber for anyway, but this magnificent basilica makes it a must. Stunning interior is such a contrast to the bland outside, which was covered with scaffold at the time of our visit. Words cannot do this beautiful building justice, the gold alter area is stunning and the small chapels off the main congregation area are so beautifully... More

Spent an hour here on a cool Sunday morning, attending mass with a friend. The congregation was warm and welcoming and we were never strangers. This Church is one of my favorites in Rome and perhaps in all of Italy. The magnificent altar, apse and chapels encourage many visitors; the opportunity to experience the sacredness of the Church where many... More

We visited Santa Maria in Trastevere over the Christmas holiday. The church was especially beautiful lit by candles in the evening. The mosaics are stunning and my 10 year old son was transfixed by the size and beauty of the church. One of the few places in Rome not overrun with tourists. Definitely a must see.

What a beautiful, peaceful church. It was hard to tear myself away from the golden mosaics. I love visiting these churches that are less crowded than the major sights yet here beautiful art. This church feels very much like a house of worship. Even with tourists passing through, it is possible to sit and contemplate. You have to deposit coins... More

This is probable one of the nicest looking traditional church in Rome the area of the city called Trastevere and the church named Santa Maria in Trastevere. I think the ceiling work is beautiful. much of the art is paintings and icons on the walls exquisite. Some folks say in has miraculous features out walls of the front of the... More

Santa Maria in Trastevere, probably Rome’s oldest church, had managed to avoid substantial structural changes. Supposedly founded on the site where a miraculous font of oil spurted on the day of Christ’s birth, there were mosaics depicting this in the apse; they dated from 1291. Besides this 12th-century church with 13th-century mosaics, there were 22 mismatched ancient columns, a wall... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
