Neighbourhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

The Janiculum (Gianicolo) Hill (Colle) contains a large park area with pleasant walking paths, scenic overlooks, and historic monuments to those who fought for the unification of Italy. It is also where the Botanic Gardens are located. It is adjacent to both Trastevere and the Vatican yet it is pleasantly devoid of tourists. First time visitors to Rome are unlikely to make this a priority stop but returning visitors might want to see Rome from this perspective, especially on a nice day.

A place that seems made especially for admiring the eternal city from above. A must during a walk in Rome, no ifs or buts. A place where you can search and, with a pinch of imagination, find the atmosphere and peace necessary to admire what remains of the past and to imagine the glory that was

I stumbled upon this park by chance, and it was the best thing I experienced in Rome. The view of Rome from here is absolutely breathtaking. The view is unreal, it feels like you're looking at a painting or something. You just have to go here, it seriously made my trip.
I found a little short cut to get here from the Vatican City.
When you are standing in St. Peter's Square and facing St. Peter's basilica, go to the left. There is an underground Terminal with a walk way the goes right under the street. It's called "TERMINAL GIANICOLO". There's actually several entrances around St. Peters, but this is just the one I took. When you're in the underground walk way, find your way to the parking garage. (When I was there there were signs everywhere directing you to a pizza buffet, I just followed those signs to help me get to the parking garage. When you get to the parking garage, take the elevator or stairs up to the top. Then when you're in the parking garage (where the cars and parking spaces are) follow signs and arrows on the wall to "Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesu". It'll take you outside, and there will be a pediatric hospital. Just follow the road up the hill, and the park is right there, you can't miss the view.
This short cut is the best. No hills to climb. No stairs to take. And you can get to the park from St. Peter's Square in like 5 minutes. Other people get here from Trastevere and have to take a bus to get there, and then climb a bunch of hills and stairs to get to the park. You're going to be at St. Peter's anyway, just take the shortcut through the terminal and you're golden. Seriously. You do not want to miss this park.

passegiata del gianicolo - the walk of gianicolo, after reading many reviews about in the internet, i found many people going uphill to it from trastevere...i suggest u do it viceversa, for a more pleasant walk...i took the route from vatican, after visiting it, exit piazza san pietro and go right into borgo santo spirito, walk to the end, till u reach a high road, then across it u will see via del gianicolo - then just follow it, for a pleasant walk, first uphill, but then straight and down, with outsatnding views over the city all over the walk, there r many benches where u can sit if u r tired or just wanna take a picture, after u reach il faro (the lighthouse) continue till garibaldi statue, there u can see not only rome, but also a nice view over vatican that u left behind...from here the way goes downhill, pass by a beautiful fountain, then more down take the stairs and u r in trastevere...i enjoyed it despite the rain

This is the most spectacular spot to watch the sunrise over Rome. On the top of the hill, there is a sweeping view of the city and as the sunrises you see each ancient dome and landmark light up with the morning sun. One of my most memorable experiences in the city.

This was a wonderful break from the heat and hustle of Rome. I had read something briefly about Janiculum Hill and decided to go. It is refered to as the "Gianicolo" in Rome. There is a lovely and romantic public park with monuments to Garibaldi and his wife. Read more about it at [--]
There are panoramic views of Rome from the hill. You can bring a picnic or buy lunch at a restaurant near the statue of Garibaldi. We enjoyed our visit there. We drove our car up to the park. You can walk, but the hill is very steep and it looks to be a strenuous and long walk. You would need sturdy shoes of some type to make this walk. This would be a nice spot for a romantic picnic for honeymooners or anyone sharing a romantic moment. Hire a taxi or see if the bus goes up there if you cannot do the walk.
There is also a famous spot where a scene from the movie "La Dolce Vita" was filmed. This is not in the park, but it is nearby on the hill. Ask a local and they will be proud to direct you to the area.

First you need to go to the Trastevere. One way to go is to take tram 8 from Piazza Venetsia to Trastevere and then go trough Transtevere's narrow streets until you reach Via Garibaldi. Then go uphill Via Garibaldi. Then on the right there is very steep uphill ending street and stairs. Go there and then just follow the road. Finally you are there and the reward is very very nice view over the Rome! You would not be disappointed!

This is one of the best places not just in Rome; and not just in Italy or even in Europe. This is one of the best places on earth. It is no wonder that this place is viewed as legendary, as the Mt. Olympus on earth, in the collective mind. From up here (and for FREE!) one has the luxury of being able to look upon the Eternal City all the way to the mountains in the east where the urban fabric of the city climbs toward heaven.
The city never seems to end from here, and when we focus on the immense treasury that is right below us, we get lost in the dozens of details: domes, medieval towers, old roofs, balconies and rooftops ornate with plants and floral elements. And again, windows of all shapes and styles, facades, monuments, marbles, terracotta-tinted walls, baroque structures; Renaissance structures; Rationalist structures (such as the EUR district); Medieval structures; and then the Palatine Hill with its ancient remains of the long-gone Roman glories. Old clock towers, villas, parks, churches, temples, the Tiber river...we could continue for days as the list never ends after 3,000 years of unrepeatable history.
If one goes to Rome, he/she cannot avoid one of the best experiences ever.Go in the late afternoon so that you will get to see both the day and the night versions of this spectacle.

Either the 115 bus or a taxi will get you to the highest point on the Colle Del Gianicolo, Janiculum Hill. When you arrive you will immediately see the massive equestrian statue in honour of Giuseppe Garibaldi, unifier of modern Italy. The views from this Piazza Di Garibaldi here at the summit are magnificent, extending from the Pantheon and the Victor Emanuele Monument on the left to the colosseum and Circus Maximus on the right. While this is true, you have to be a bit careful when taking photos, because the foliage is growing and beginning to obscure some of this stunning panorama. There are vendors, a large playing area for families with children, and restrooms on the lower level of the Piazza. Now, one warning. If you do not like sudden, sharp, loud sounds, don't stay here around noon. A cannon - minus the cannon ball of course - is fired here at that precise moment (though with all the noise of Rome, I wonder if anyone outside the immediate area can even hear it)! Enjoy!

First of all: there are so many amazing places in Rome! You'll never see them all within your vacations but actually that shouldn't be your purpose. The best thing you could do in Rome is just absorbing the atmosphere of this marvelous city - enjoy every moment wherever you are.
Anyway there have been some places we enjoyed exceedingly. One of them was the Monte Gianicolo. Due to a friends recommendation we decided to walk up the second-tallest hill located in western Rome (the tallest being Monte Mario). Only 15 Minutes from the river Tiber you get a panorama view that compensate every step you have to take up to that place.
The best time to go there is about half an hour before sunset. The sunlight sets behind you but it leaves a golden glance over the city and bathed everything in the most beautiful colours - STILL AMAZING!!
The best place to enjoy is near the Villa Lante al Gianicolo. There your view is not disturbed by trees. Important: even if you are on the second-tallest hill it's impossible to sea St. Peter's and the Colosseum. But this shouldn't be a reason missing this gorgeous place.
After sunset we walked down to Trastevere the 13th rione of Rome, on the west bank of the Tiber. There you can find delicous and less expensive restaurants e.g. Ai Marmi. Best Pizza with good wine will round your day off :-)

Volevo sapere in che giorni e a che ora sparano un colpo dal cannone del Gianicolo

How long would it take to walk up the hill ?
Is it near any restaurants/bars ?
Want a romantic walk up there but don't want it to be too tiring or too long of a walk ?
Thanks in advance

Using Google Maps as my guide, it took about 20 minutes to walk (all uphill at a pretty good pitch) up from a restaurant in Trastevere. Eat in Trastevere before going up. The lookout is a plaza above the park and just has concession stands. There are so many restaurants in Trastevere. You can take bus 115. Use a map to see what stop is closest to where you are.

Hi Can you tell me how to get to see this view from our hotel -Morgana Hotel which i believe is near the termini. can we walk there or take a bus etc?
Written 15 February 2015
I would recommend taking a Roma Pass, or riding a bus (I believe they are the same thing) It took some time, and stumbling around to find it. I took a combination of train, bus, and walking. I haven't been to Rome in sometime, sorry Icouldn't have been of more help!
