Neighbourhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

This beautiful mausoleum located on Via Gairbaldi lies just next to the Fontana dell'Acqua paola and right opposite the church of St Peter in Montorio. Gairbaldi himself had designated the Janiculum Hill area as the place where remains of his fellow comrades who helped save the Roman Republic should be put to rest. This mausoleum which was inaugurated in 1941 contains an altar made from a single block of red granite. You can spot she-wolf head on bronze tripods at each corner of the monument with the words "Rome or Death" inscribed on the upper part of the memorial. A beautiful informative tableau is displayed explaining to tourists the significance of the memorial. Beautiful gardens close by make it an ideal place to relax and spare a thought and a tear of gratitude to the unsung martyrs not only of Rome but of every nation who lay down their lives to protect their unknown fellow country brethren and the sovereignty of their motherland !

The mausoleum was erected in memory of the defenders of the Roman Republic, who died in the fight against the French occupiers in 1849. It contains the remains of those killed in the battles for Roma. The defense was headed by Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose monument is also on the hill of Yanikul. The Mausoleum was designed by Giovanni Jacobucci (1895-1970) and opened on November 3, 1941, after two years of construction in In the days of Mussolini, who used Republican ideals to strengthen the decrepit fascist regime.

The Garibaldi Ossuary Mausoleum is located on Janiculum Hill a short distance from Fontana dell'acqua paola. It contains the remains of those who died defending the Roman Republic. Worth a visit if in the area to pay homage to the war heroes.

Worth a look if you’re heading to the top of Gianicolo Hill in Trastevere. It appears you cannot past the fence/gate to get inside (unless maybe there is a special event going on).

Interesting mausoleum that we passed by on our walk up to the Fontana del Giancolo. This mausoleum holds the remains of one Goffredo Mameli the composer of the Italian National anthem. He was also deeply involved in the Italian unification movement. A significant battle was fought in this area and the mausoleum also holds the remains of many of the soldiers who fought under Garibaldi. This is not Garibaldi's mausoleum.

Mausoleo Ossario Garibaldino was designed by Giovanni Jacobucci and took two years to build. The opening was on the 3rd November 1941, which was the anniversary of the Battle of Mentana. The monument contains the remains of those who were killed in the battles for Rome, from 1849 to 1870. The inscriptions read, “Aid caduti per Roma 1849-1870”, (To the fallen for Rome) and the very passionate and stirring, “Roma o Morte”, (Rome or Death).
The crypt contains the names of the fallen, however, many were never identified, including 16, 14 and 11 year olds. A sarcophagus with the remains of 22 year old Goffredo Mameli, author of Italy’s National Anthem, who died from wounds while fighting on the Janiculum in 1849, is also in the crypt.
Visiting monuments involving war is always emotional, creating an opportunity to reflect on those who have given their lives, the peaceful environment, aids in that reflection. The mausoleum is just up from Trastevere on the Janiculum Hill, close by is Fontana dell'Acqua Paola and the beautiful Tempietto, so it is worth the trek.

This war memorial commemorates the battle in 1849, at the slopes of the Janiculum hill, between Garibaldi’s army and French troops, fighting in an effort to defend the revolutionary Roman Republic against the restoration of the temporal power of the Pope over Rome. It was designed by Giovanni Jacobucci in 1941 as a rectangular structure with three round arches on each side and an altar in the center carved from a single block of red granite.

This is a solemn war memorial on Janiculum Hill, where the last strong battle was fought, under the leadership of Garibaldi, before the establishment of the Roman republic. The mausoleum contains the remains of soldiers who died fighting for Rome during the middle of the 19th century. It is a simple and austere monument, which has the words, 'Roma O Morte' (Rome or Death) written at the top.
You can walk up from Trastevere to the monument. It is a few metres away from the Spanish Embassy and the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola. Very few tourists venture so far out, so the area is quiet and secluded. There is a wonderful view of Rome from Janiculum Hill, just opposite the fountain, so it is quite worthwhile to do this walk.

Although I have passed by it thousands of times, today for the first time I visited this small and beautiful monument. Free entry. I'm happy to have visited it.

We would have liked to visit it on Sunday morning 10 September. We went specifically to the Janiculum, after having consulted several sites which confirmed that the monument was open ("Closed on Monday"). When we arrived, we found it closed. On the gate, a prominently displayed sign confirmed what was indicated on the sites....Many tourists, especially foreigners, were disappointed...Bad publicity for Rome and Italy.
