Famous for its mosaic at the entrance of a dog on a chain with the warning 'CAVE CANEM' like so many of the buildings in Pompeii, this one is closed. You can see the mosaic from the street, but not any of the beautiful frescoes inside.

This residence is typical of the middle class that grew rich in the latter period of Pompeii's history. At the entrance is a black and white mosaic depicting a guard dog with the words 'cave canem' - beware of the dog.

One of the most beautiful mosaics we saw was a picture of a fierce black dog on a chain with the words Cave Canem - Officially the earliest known "Beware of the Dog" sign (found in the house of the Tragic Poet).

the vegetation brings the ancient ruins to life and helps you picture why things were made and their purpose

The mosaic at the street entrance i what makes this a place to see . The crouching dog alerts visitors/intruders that there is a guard dog present even if only in stone

It was closed for us too. We saw the mosaic but that was it. Still plenty to see on this tour. Make sure you get a guide. They are very informative and know their stuff

I couldn't wait to see this part when I read the name "The house of tragic poet", I mean wow...this is melancholic! It turned out to be a cute place with a nice angry doggy mosaic, which I liked so much that I could not...More

House of the tragic poet has stunning mosaic tiles floors that really stand out. Definitely one of the more interesting houses to view in Pompeii.

Most of the better Roman houses in Pompeii have a certain construction style involving a courtyard with rooms coming off that courtyard... Fountains often a feature

Oh dear, we were here in July and it was so hot (90 degrees?), hardly any shade, our too young tour guide wanted to recite the encyclopedia to us while standing in the sun for over 2 hours...all the rubble - oops - historic stones...More
