As you come through the main entrance this is the first large structure you will see and being inside it takes you back to all the films you have ever seen involving chariot races and gladiators. Simply amazing

This amphitheatre is the oldest in the Roman world. It could hold up to 20,000 spectators. Watch out for the fresco paintings of gladiators.

One of my favourite buildings in Pompeii and so impressive. Amazing how much is still standing and I like the fact viewing is restricted to just the central arena. Much better than having people trample all over the seating areas. It’s a large structure and...More

This was the first building we saw as we entered the site. It is like walking into a newly finished building. This amphitheatre was finished 150 years before the Colosseum in Rome and seats 20,000 people. Amazing.

Lovely to see and walk in/under/around. This gives you an idea of the scale of entertainment in everyday Pompeii. So glad I have seen this

I was worried as we walked towards it that you couldn't get inside, but was thrilled to find the tunnel open to visitors. It was a fantastic experience to stand on the gladiator field and look around the amphitheatre, which is incredibly well preserved. You...More

On entrance this was our first introduction to Pompeii. Fabulous example of stadium and currently has Pink Floyd exhibition. Due to rains it was rather puddle ridden. A great slice of history.

Of course, this Amphiteatre is much smaller than the one in Rome. But this one has also a story to tell. And much older story.

This was one of the most atmospheric of the large public buildings in Pompeii. It is not as large as Rome's Collosseum, but is substantially more complete.
