Would be good if they could also show you the old prison or dungeons. Like most things in Naples we couldn't get in to see some of the normally open areas but there was no work going onVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 October 2023
- Wez74Aldershot, United Kingdom444 contributionsNaples VistaVisited here on a Friday morning whilst in Naples. We took the funicular railway up from the city centre and there was a little bit of a queue to get tickets although no one checks them! It's an impressive vantage point, arguably the best in Naples to see the city, bay, Mount Vesuvius and beyond. The fortress itself isn't that interesting, there's a few storyboards dotted around explaining some of the history, but the majority of people no doubt visit just to take in the great views. There's a cafe at the top but the toilets were a bit grim. It was only €6 to get in so from that aspect it's good value to spend a couple of hours. If ever you're doing a visit Naples, I would definitely recommend you should add it to your itinery,Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- evonwise17Windsor, United Kingdom220 contributionsPanoramic views in a medieval settingYou came here on the last evening of my 2 week adventure in Naples and Campania. I was tired after a full day of sightseeing and took the funicolare up to the Castello. I was instantly re-energised on arrival! The building itself is impressive (although as a visitor you are not permitted entry to the castle itself). To get to the viewing platform on the castle’s roof you walk up the ancient stairs and ramparts allowing sneak peeks of city and the bay of Naples. The panoramic views from the rooftop are breathtaking! Well worth the visit and a fabulous last sunset of my holiday!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 October 2023
- Andreas067Rhodes Town, Greece208 contributionsBEST ATTRACTION IN NAPOLIProbably the best attraction in Napoli. The views are amazing from the tops, easy to find and go with the funicular and the walk inside the castle is priceless. You will see the whole city as well as Pompeii and the volcano.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 November 2023
- Melanie TNew York City, New York7,029 contributions€5 ticketsDuring my Italy research, I read the Castel Sant’ Elmo will give you a great view of the Bay of Naples. I pre-purchased tickets online for €5, which turned out to be unnecessary because 1. You still have to wait on the regular line to show them your ticket (but the line was only a few people deep) 2. It was pretty empty for a Saturday at 1. I have a feeling the castle isn’t as popular because you can get a similar view of the bay for free right next to the castle. Although I would say the view from the castle is better because you can go higher, and there are no roads/trees blocking the view. There really isn’t much to see inside the grounds so it’s just more for the view itself. We ended up spending about an hour there just walking around and taking pictures. For €5, I think it’s worth it. If I had to pay anything more than that, I would probably just opt for the free view.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- Michael KSan Jose, California1,144 contributionsImpressive view from the castleThe castle is very impressive looking on the outside but the best part is the view of the surrounding area including the city of Naples, the Bay, Mt. Vesuvius, and Capri in the distance. You can take the funicular up here, but finding your way to the castle is a bit challenging since the signs are sketchy.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2024

Of course you can see Vesuvius, but also the entire bay of Naples, including Sorrento and and Isle of Capri. Just great!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 June 2024
- kocspeter1980Nyköping, Sweden20 contributionsBest view of Naples!Romantic sunset. Classic Napoli with the view of the whole bay. Easy to reach from Montesanto station by funiculare ( funicularetickets are cheap and you csn buy themat the Tabacchi) On your way back from Montesanto is the best marketexperience with plenty of locals doing their daily caos. No tourist traps but awsome neapolitan people.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024
- TonyC_Austin367 contributionsA must see when in NaplesThe best views of Naples and surrounding area is from this old castle/fort. It's history and size is also impressive and worth seeing. They have a cafe in here too, so you can spend a lot of time strolling and taking in the views, especially on a nice day when Vesuvius is clearly visible.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2024

Wanted to visit it, but for some reason the lady at the front desk said we can't get in and should return another day. It was a rainy foggy midweek morning at the end of November. If they don't have enough tickets available during these times, what do they do in summer?

Definitely worth the view. You can see the gulf and the city from above in all its beauty.
Recommendation to ask when purchasing the ticket if there are any exhibitions inside the castle, but above all to ask when the exhibition ends! The exhibition times do NOT coincide with the closing times of the structure. After a certain hour the exhibition closes and at the entrance you pay a reduced price!
My boyfriend and I did not know or were informed about the purchase and, after a tour of the castle, we set foot in the exhibition room only to be told they were closing. We were very disappointed. Since the full price of the ticket also includes the exhibitions pay attention to it.
I do not recommend going during peak hours because the sun is really strong and you can feel everything.

We caught the funicular up to visit this castle as it is presides over the city of Naples. The views are amazing. It takes about 2-3 hours to walk around and we’ll worth a visit. There is the castle and battlements to walk around. we took some water with us as we were not sure if refreshments would be available. There are toilets here. The building next door is a Monastery

Catching the funicular is all part of the experience. We chose the option of walking up the Castle driveway rather than using the lift and were not disappointed. The views over Naples are outstanding.
At the top there is a gallery/museum and the work on display when we were there was varied. I wouldn’t visit expecting the concept of a castle like you get in the UK but for the views it is certainly worth it.

As we had a weekly travel card we got the funicular train up to the castle. The path is a ramp up to the castle walls. The view of Naples and surrounding area is really great. It was definitely worth going. Only let down was the coffee in the cafe at the top, over priced for a tiny glass of warm milky froth with no taste.

Fab view!
We got the funicular up the hill which was easy and then walked around to the Castle. It’s still an up hill walk for quite a bit and isn’t fully accessible.
We got the European 18-25 tickets so only cost €2 each. Normal tickets are €5 but it’s also cheaper after 4pm.
The Castle itself is rundown but really you are there to see the view. The view is stunning and you get to see all sides of Naples from the bay to residential region, to the CBD and mount Vesuvius.
It was great to go just before sunset as you could see it in daylight, sunset and night.
It wasn’t too crowded here and there were plenty of times you could take photos or just stand without being in other people’s way. There is not anywhere to sit and see the view comfortably. Nor is there any shade. There are toilets and a bar/cafe.
Overall would definitely recommend a trip here, it’s worth the time & money.

The place to go for views of Naples. The castle itself is imposing due to the size of it. Unfortunately you can’t look around the castle more. At the top though you get 360 panoramic views of Naples which were fantastic. Vomero itself was also lovely to visit and can be reached easily by the Metro (recommend getting off at each of the flagged artistic stops on the network). Beware the toilets are right at the top of the castle after approx a 15 minute walk.

Entrance admission was only €3 and virtually no line. You walk over the ramps and up the castle walls (no stairs). Along the way, you'll see placards with information about the castle and events from history.
The top of the castle offers great views of the city and you can see the sea. It's great to walk around the whole perimeter.
Note, however, the bathrooms are not very good and a lot of them were broken, so be aware.
Overall, great if you're nearby.

The castle is very nice. For me it was astonishing how people built defensive mechanism that well. And of course view from the top of the castle was amazing, you can see whole city and watch places you have visited on the way. Absolutely recommend this trip, it’s worth
