About
Under the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, the neuralgic centres of the district, we find the second most important early Christian cemetery in the city. The Catacombs were extended following the burial of the North African bishop, deposited here between 451 and 453 AD. The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are the second largest in Naples, and includes both early Christian and 17th century elements. On one side there is the intensity of the early Christian elements, such as the tomb of St. Gaudiosusand frescoes and mosaics of the 5th and 6th centuries, and on the other, the special graves reserved for nobles, dating back to the 17th century, when the catacombs resumed the function of a burial site. The Catacombs of San Gaudioso conserve valuable frescoes and mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries that feature many symbols that were widely used in the early Christian era, such as the fish, the lamb, and grapes with branches.

    Interesting visit
The entry ticket is for both catacombes in Naples although we’ve only done this one so far. It was interesting to see the church above ground and also the catacombes below. The guide was very interesting and seemed to know lots about the site. Definitely worth an hour of your time.

    Informative tour
You could only enter the catacombs if on a guided tour. We ended up on the Italian tour due the English one being full and couldn’t wait for the later one. However, we had just visited the other catacombs nearby and was able to pick up on the general gist of what the tour guide was saying despite only know very basic Italian (hand gestures helped too!), he seemed very informative. Definitely worth the visit, the preservation of the place was incredible.

A fascinating tour with a juicy twist.
We very much enjoyed learning about the history of these catacombs, and how they were used differently over time. The description of the special methods deployed by the 17th century church to ‘squeeze out’ extra profits from wealthy parishioners was worth the price of the tour alone. The guide was very entertaining and full of information that he conveyed well. The special project this tour supports is one we and you will be happy to support. Very glad we took the time to find and include this fascinating tour.

    Best guided tour in Naples
This venue was very easy to find and the entry was very well organised. Our guide, Vittorio spoke English, but also understood it and navigated the site with a sense of humour. He gave very good insight to the history of this church and it's cemetery. The catacombs were well displayed and atmospheric, and you were given enought time to explore every area.

    Excellent (expect the unexpected...)
Online ticket booking, quite fast. Large group, but not too much. We visited the imposing basilica, the catacombs (including the unexpected 'putridarium'...), and finally a beautiful nativity scene (probably the most beautiful I've ever seen!). Competent guide. Overall, an excellent visit.

    Very interesting tour
The tour was very interesting and bizarre, it's definitely worth learning about the religious and social history of the burials in the catacombs. Finding the Catacombs was a slight challenge when following Google maps. Look out for any lifts or stairs in the direction of the catacombs because it's located just below where the directions take you . It's a 20 min walk from the Archaeological museum.

Catacombs give a right message "Me today you tomorrow",
What a must visit catacombs, the Frescos mention what every single mortal must remember " I'm here in catacombs today, you will be here tomorrow", indeed the only certain thing in the life of a mortal is the Death, rest all is uncertain. The chamber where the dead were made to lose the fluids to extract the bones for more such rich can put their dead in the prestigious resting place which now is right below a big church. Emmanuel was brilliant, the local artists giving their own twist to the Nativity scene at the end is a perfect finish to a tour of the catacombs.

Informative and macabre in equal measure.
Fabulous, thought-provoking tour of the catacombs with a very knowledgeable guide, who stressed the significance of this project in reviving a previously troubled area of Naples. The basilica is appealing, if you like that kind of thing, and the juxtaposition of 7th and 16th century practices around death certainly stimulating. A great way of understanding Naples' combination of religious and pagan-adjacent practices following the counter-reformation, and development as the city it is today. Ticket includes entrance in the Catacombs of San Gennaro within a year of purchase, so well worthwhile.

A 50 minute tour of the catacombs, which was well paced and interesting. The catacombs are quite small, but there’s a lot of history packed in there. No skeletons, though. The guide was very entertaining and told great stories. Our kids were fascinated and really enjoyed it. There’s also a feel-good story about the coop that runs the tours and is helping transform the community. The catacombs were also quite cool, which was a welcome respite from the heat outside.

Really interesting tour of the church and catacombs. Serena was a brilliant guide, so passionate about the project and the whole area as well as being really informative. This ticket also gives you entrance to the San Gennaro catacombs but we didn't have time for them. Both the church and the two sets of catacombs are run by a not for profit cooperative and it was a pleasure to support this. Please go, you will not be disappointed.

I visited these catacombs just after the other nearby ones, San Gennaro. If you plan to do both, note they are both covered under one ticket, but I suggest doing San Gaudioso first. The tour is slightly shorter and you can then walk over to San Gennaro just in time for the next hour's tour.

And I do recommend seeing both, as they are completely different. Of note at San Gaudioso are the fascinating and unusual burial customs. As with San Gennaro, no bones are here.

Super fascinating tour given by Laura! She got into some pretty eerie details that were really interesting from a both a cultural and historic prospective. It was the perfect length, and she was great at answering questions on the spot. Would absolutely recommend this spot, followed by the San Gennaro Catacombs!
