About
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Pietrasanta is the first church in Naples dedicated to the cult of the Virgin. It stands on the ruins of the Ancient Temple of Diana, and becomes a basilica following the appearance of the Madonna at San Pomponio, which tells him to build a church and to dedicate it to her where he would have found a stone wrapped in a blue cloth.

The church, a basilica, dates the VIthe cent AD, the bell tower the XIIth cent and it was largely redone in the XVII ent. Unfortunately the beautiful tile floor, probably of the 1700s is largely ruins and nothing seems to be done to restore it or save what's left.
Here now there is a very nice and exciting Warhol exhibit, very nicely done. Lot od well nown paintings, as Marylin, Mao, Jackie, Jagger, and pleanti of drowing not all known to me. There is a very charming pop room with lot of daisies, mirrors, psycadelic lights, great fun

The history and architecture is all jumbled up as per the photos. A stand alone bell tower with multiple efforts to reconstruct, a newer basilica at the rear and an older building to the front. A huge dome on top. All a bit off!

Another amazing church in a beautiful busy Piazza.
Lots of touristy cafes but it's worth going into the church for a look.
We went in when Mass was being said so we left quite soon.
Two entrances; up the steps on the left side but you have to go past the Alcoholics & their dogs or through the entrance on the right & up some internal steps.

Being a lover of churches I was very disappointed that we could see absolutely nothing of this church. There was an art exhibition and we paid to enter. Although I enjoyed the exhibition the church was partitioned off and although I asked we could not see anything of the church. I don't know whether this is a permanent exhibition venue or not.

Walking along that inexhaustible artistic reservoir that is Via dei Tribunali (the Decumano major), near the superb Pontano Chapel, the passer-by may happen to rest his eyes on a bell tower that is very different from those that crowd the panorama of Naples, very different also from large bell tower near San Pietro a Majella, which also stands out in its simple 14th century forms. This is the Romanesque bell tower, from the 11th century, of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the oldest in Campania and one of the most striking examples of the superposition of various eras in this area of Naples where in each century it was literally built on the remains of the previous one. Thus, on the base it will not be difficult to notice Roman marble, perhaps remains of an ancient temple of Diana, as well as along the entire bell tower. Not just a curiosity to note, but one of the most immediate examples of the architectural overlap and mix of styles prevailing in that unique place which is the historic center between the decumani.

I have never cared so little about clutter, dirt and garbage. Wonderful city, with all that.

The visit is a journey into the past, it is a story with open eyes guided by an accurate description by Maira, an attentive guide, who was able to convey not only notions but historical sensitivity.
Exciting (also but not only!) for being unusual. Highly recommended!
