About
Around the origin of our Catacombs much has been discussed, they were simpleburial and never were quarries or underground ways; the first note of the monumentis repeated since the death of St. Agrippino our bishop in the II century, when hisbody was buried there in a noble tomb. Many miracles the saint operated by thetomb, so it became a place of reverence and neapolitan wished to be buried in thatplace.

- E C4 contributionsA beautiful experienceThe staff at the ticket office were helpful and the tour well organised. Our guide, Emmanuele, was very friendly, spoke great English, answered our questions and really immersed us in the experience. The catacombs of San Gennaro are definitely worth visiting. History spanning centuries all under one (stone) roof. Also worth noting that with the same ticket you can visit the catacombs of San Gaudioso within 12 months.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 October 2023
- David R83 contributionsA must-see in NaplesWe had to walk a long way uphill to get to the catacombs, but it was well worth it. The catacombs are a must-see in Naples. We had previously booked online for a tour in English. There are quite a few steps down into the catacombs. It was a fascinating tour, seeing some of Naples' early history from pre-Christian to early Christian times. Our guide, Serena, was excellent.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024
- Stella X2 contributionsSan Genaro catacombs! It was the most beautiful experience in Naples! We learned a lot of interesting information about history of Naples! Very cheap, with one ticket you can go on two tours. The stuff was great the most great!! They do fantastic work! With the ticket you reinforce a poor neighborhood in Naples! I absolutely loved and I would visit again and again! Totally recommended don't miss it!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 April 2024

- Ivona Myriel7 contributionsKnow Naples from its magnificent sideSuch a beautiful place in a challenging city like Naples! Thanks to interesting guided tours can one dive in a complete other world. Tours with Emanuele are an invitation to a great adventure to discover the first centuries of the Christian church, how different it was in that time than nowadays. If you wanna know, why the word "divine" can easily be derived from "the wine", come and book a tour with Emanuele. No problem to get tickets, easily to go through. Wonderfully spent time, if you want to know Naples better fom its magnificent side.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 June 2024

- pinkvoidLeeds, United Kingdom211 contributionsWell worthwhile experienceBrilliant experience with an informative and engaging tour guide, Antonio. Particularly enjoyed the Napoli phrase “It isn’t true but I believe it anyway”, I won’t forget that! Found the history of the area at the end of the tour highly interesting. The experience is well worth the relatively low cost.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 August 2024
- umber s1 contributionBringing the underworld to life! The catacombs of Naples were the highlight of our family holiday! The guide was excellent and really bought the catacombs to life. We visited both sites (I think San gaudioso) and the storytelling had our kids mesmerised. Highly recommend for families.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 August 2024
- PhilGloucester, United Kingdom7 contributionsWell worth a visit.A really fascinating place to visit, offering an engaging mix of the mythology and history of Napoli’s ancient and recent past. Antonio was a great guide with excellent English. The modern, on-site cafe also had a good selection of reasonably priced food and drinks on offer Not only a great piece of local history but also a brilliant social enterprise, challenging perceptions and bringing a hopeful spark to a little-regarded part of the city.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 August 2024
- Hrvoje GZagreb, Croatia73 contributionsExcellent underground experiencefantastic underground experience, great tour and value for money. Arrived by bus 204 from Via Toledo (1.3€ single fare), bought tickets for catacombe online earlier that day (very easy to make purchase). less than an hour tour, bit great story and experience. when you buy San Gennaro catacombe ticket, you get free entry for other catacombs nearby. tricky part is to return, recomend to walk back with the guide and catch same bus that you arrived with.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 September 2024

We had a wonderful experience here! Raffaella was a lovely, knowledgeable tour guide. It was clear that she is very passionate about Italian history and genuinely enjoyed sharing this information with the group. Highly recommend making a stop here to learn more about the interesting history of Napoli - the cool underground catacombes are also a nice break from the intense heat :)

We booked a tour in English the day before and turned up ahead of time. Our guide gave us a very good explanation of the three different areas of the catacombs and gave us ample time for photos. The tour took about an hour and was good value for money at €9 each.

I did not realize before attending this tour that the restoration of Naples' catacombs is fairly recent, begun by a group of friends passionate about preserving the city's history. My guide was Isabella, one of these friends, and she was wonderful. Her English was fantastic and she was open and knowledgeable about any questions we had. If you plan to also tour the nearby Catacombs of San Gaudioso. do that one first as the tour is shorter and you can then walk over to San Gennaro for the next hour's tour. If you do San Gennaro first, as I did, you will have just missed the next tour at San Gaudioso. Both sites are covered under one ticket. If you only have time for one, San Gennaro is better.
Although there are no bones here, it is fascinating to see and learn about the ancient burial customs. Some of the crypts and tunnels have well-preserved frescoes.
It is definitely a bit chilly underground so bring a jacket.

Great way to spend a rainy afternoon! Our guide gave a very detailed tour explaining the locals passion for Naples patron Saint and the historical events of the city. The catacombs are more extensive than we imagined and the ticket gives you entrance to other sites which we unfortunately did not have time to do. Well worth the time and money.

Very cool experience. There is no option to visit these on your own and visits must be done with a guide. They only have groups in Italian and English so hopefully that works out for you. It is a must to book on-line ahead of time, especially since the languages and groups are limited. We recently toured the catacombs in Paris and these are nothing like that at all. Basically, they are cut out of caves on the hillside of what used to be far out of town and now is a lively area on Napoli. Since the caves date back nearly 2,000 years, there is a lot of history to tell. And what a lively and interesting history it is, with so many different periods that greatly affected the site. If you’re looking to see the bones like you do in several other catacombs, then this isn’t for you. They were removed some time ago and when you tour you can hear the story of why. The locals are particularly irritable with the group of people that forced their removal some time ago. The construction is fascinating and so is the stories that go along with the history. Definitely a recommended stop while in Napoli. For those without a car, you can take the metro up to the National Archeological Museum and then hop a bus from in front up to the site. Make sure to download the app and buy tickets in advance, as they do not sell tickets on the buses here.

I bought these tickets online and you just exchange them at the desk. We were broken up into groups as there were a quite a number of us. Despite us being a large group our lovely guide took his time was very very informative. Explaining absolutely everything of the symbolism and the history. It wasn’t rushed at all. There was plenty of time to ask questions and take photos.
I really enjoyed the tour and would definitely join the second tour which is offered as part of your ticket to be used within a year of validation of the purchased ticket.
The guides of these tours are a social initiative. They are a group of locals that care and have worked very hard to build up the group and preserve these catacombs. Which they are doing very well indeed.
If you enjoy them the way I did, show your appreciation with a small gesture or tip at the end.
Well done 👏 I highly recommend.

My wife, little sons (2 months and 4 years old) and I joined the guided tour in the "Catacombe di San Gennaro". Our guide Eduardo did really an amazing job. His tour was both entertaining and informative. In total the tour takes about 1,5 hours and you'll get a lot of information on the catacombs and the history of Naples. Furthermore, the ticket allows you to participate in a guided tour in the "Catacombe di San Gaudioso", too.
For us the tour was really fabulous and also one of the highlights of our Naples trip. Therefore we could definitely recommend the "Catacombe di San Gennaro" to everybody who visits Naples.

One day in mid-August, taking advantage of a semi-desert Naples, with my partner we decided to visit this site. We bought online tickets for the guided tour directly from the official website, at a price of 13 euros, but also including the entrance to the Catacombs of San Gaudioso in the Sanità district, with a year to visit them. Fortunately, it is not necessary to print tickets purchased online, but simply download them to your smartphone and have them validated at the ticket office. The site is accessible from Capodimonte (where the Church of Good Recommendation is located) and has an unattended parking, a bar and a meeting point where you can wait for the departure of the booked guided tour. The walk in the underground of Naples was fascinating and suggestive, the geometries of the environments and the lighting created are the real strength, in addition to the Guide's stories about Naples and the Patron Saint San Gennaro. The Guide was a very young and helpful girl, from the Sanità district, who was excited to be able to participate and contribute to the project to re-emerge the Sanità district where she was born and lives. The site is for the most part a dense lattice carved into the tuff, where you can glimpse the basilicas around which it developed and the rediscovered tomb of San Gennaro, as well as admire what remains of the frescoes and mosaics that lined the tombs of the wealthiest characters. The cool temperature in the catacombs also gave us some refreshment from the great heat of that day. It 'a walk not at all tiring that takes you into the bowels of the city of Naples!

You start off in a Gift shop.
Our tour started within ten minutes of arriving we chose the English Option.
I did not like one of the tour guides at the front desk, I felt as if he was making jokes about myself and partner in another language to his colleage that seemed a bit off, before resuming his role/duties and acting friendly again in English. It came across as RUDE and inturrupting.
They also inform you for your ticket you can also enter a second catacombes within the city for FREE after this visit, and will guide you on how to get there at the end of this tour.
Upon starting our tour, you are finding yourself in a very large underground room with carved out coffin shapes within the walls all around you, everywhere you look.
And The more you look the more you see.
What I find persoanlly interesting was the story of St Gennaro, and St John both bishops of Naples, told by our tour guide.
I also found some of the artwork around the graves were going back during the paganism times before christianity, to early christianity to later christianity... you can really see a differance within the 600 years this catacombe was used.
You can also see whom was wealthy and not, based on the size of their plots.
Deffinelty worth the tour and a history lesson and a very interesting story of St Gennaro and St John who's graves are still there to this Day.
Wheel chair accesable however there are steps.
Toilets and other facilities are location at the entrance of the gift shop where you pay for your ticket.

How long does it take the both tours (San Gennaro and Gaudioso)?
Written 16 July 2022
Hi There, the San Genaro catacombs took over an hour but it can be longer depending on how inquisitive the guests are. Then a walk to the Gaudioso took 15 mins. The Gaudioso catacombs are only open in the morning so we couldn’t take the visit but it might be the same. Hope it helps.

From the official website: An experience accessible to all
The Catacombs of San Gennaro are the only site of their kind in the world that is fully accessible.
In 2009 a decision was made, together with the Tutti a Scuola association, to remove all the architectural barriers and to create walkways and ramps, so that the site could be accessible to everyone.
