It dominates the square of the same name preceded by a spectacular trapezoidal staircase. The baroque façade houses the statue of the Immaculate Madonna. Unfortunately in our two days in Matera during the "Bruna" period we always found it closed...

This is another thirteenth century church that has undergone many renovations. Today it has a beautiful Baroque façade and interior.

Note the beautiful ceilings, and side chapels intricately carved altars.

Another beautiful Baroque church with an impressive façade in the centre of the city.

Although there are a lot of churches in Matera this is another well worth a visit.

Baroque church that gained its current appearance in 18th century. Original structure was dating back to 13th century. Previous shrine was allegedly visited by St. Francis of Assisi, hence the name. Facade is great, inside it's rather not very interesting.

This is a small but impressive church and you can have a look when you walk through town. Its exterior is interesting and you could allot 10 minutes for this attraction.

It is all about the outside with this church. Great setting and easy to find. Very photo friendly on the outside. Inside quiet plain. Well worth a visit as it will impress.

A classic and really beautiful Baroque Church from 13c. It's set on one of the busiest squares with many bars and restaurants around, as well street performers. Free to enter to admire beautiful altar and wooden ceiling.

Because of the opulence of this church and its exceptional outside decorations, it is somewhat an example of baroc architecture. And Matera has quite a lot of monuments like these

On the piazza of the same name, the exterior of this church reminded us of churches in Spain and South America. Elaborate stone carvings and statues lead to a double-pane door. The interior is nicely decorated with stucco and pastel colors, but the ceiling is low and flat, painted in geometric figures and unimpressive. The wooden pulpit, with a few carved decorations and gold paint is unimpressive. The marble altar is plain, behind it offers several small paintings crowned by the organ pipes. The windows offer modest stained glass, and the ensemble is attractive, but not memorable.

Reading the details on this church there has been a fair amount of restoration over the years. The facade is 1751. The church was built on top of first half of 13th century underground Franciscan community complex’s.
There are so many beautiful churches in Matera but it is worth a look. Entry is free.
