All Sassi neightborhood is excellent for explorers, just start walking from one point and let it surprise you with all the amazing views from different corners of the old town.

One of the very beautiful and unique cave churches of Matera, Santa Lucia alle Malve costs 3 euros to get in (or 6 euros to get in 2 more churches) and is right in the center of the old town, in the Sassi. I found...More

One of the many beautiful churches in Matera. This church is in a cave, it has some beautiful Frescoes. Like the other cave churches you cannot take pictures inside.

Our guide took us here and explained everything, which was worthwhile. Frescoes. Fascinating to see where the animals lived inside as well.

We visited as part of a tour group. As with many structures in Matera, the church is built into the side of a hill. It has remaining fragments of frescoes that are well worth a visit. No photography allowed.
