I visited the old town of Matera for a walk. The cave house Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo, in the middle of the promenade behind the church of St. Peter's Caveoso, and the cave house facing the precipitous Gravina Valley and topped by Matera Basilica, look like this, but I realize how often I lived there. It is a typical house of Sassi di Matera, with five rooms carved into the rock, inside which are displayed tools and furniture used in daily life by the family who lived there until 1958. Adjacent to the cave are stables, basements, water tanks, and snow tanks designed to give a realistic picture of life in the cave. It's a common pattern of Things to do, but there's no reason not to come here and see

This was a family's home until the 1950s. Amazing! But imagine it in 1850, 1650, 1450. Not that much different. Do not visit the Sassi neighborhood without visiting at least one house museum.

There are now several of these restored caves open in Matera - hard to imagine that the others would be better than this, plus it has the bonus of a rock crypt. We paid 3 euros per person for both. They were brought alive by the English audio guide (transmitted into the cave rather than through headphones) - other languages also available - though this may not have worked so well if the venue had been busy (we were the only people, on a midweek early evening). The dwelling has four surprisingly spacious rooms, filled with artefacts that would have been used by the inhabitants, who only left in 1958. The rock crypt is simple and on three levels and has an interesting surprise at the bottom. Another advantage of this location is that it is currently in a less restored and touristed section of the sassi (though clearly being developed fast) and so more evocative we felt.

Nicole, our guide who was born in Romania, brought us here to kick start our Matera walking tour. The entry fee is nominal for insight how Sassi cave people lived just 60 years ago. What surprised me was that the rooms were large and the ceilings were high. Of course, they lived with their livestock which must have been uncomfortable and smelly, not withstanding no running water and electricity.
Given this no or low cost option, the living conditions for this family were not that terrible. No wonder Sassi families were not easily relocated.

These Grotta give a real insight into how the people used to live here. This one was really big, and felt like a palace compared to some of the others. Eye opening.

This actual home was only abandoned when the Italian government forced the occupants out in the 1950s for reasons of sanitation. The ingenuity of the people living in these tight quarters was amazing. Their use of space was also magnificent. Also, seeing the church and the storage building was a real bonus!

The Casa Grotta is a typical Sassi dwelling, dug into the rock. It allows you to learn and understand the history and culture of the population of the area. It is on 3 levels and connected to a cellar. This one was lived in until the 1950's. Great for all ages and not too expensive..

Interesting large Sasso, but very rude lady at the ticket shop. Definitely needs training on how to deal friendly with foreign customers.

It is good to visit this place to understand better - it is not only a sort of dwelling, it used to be a very special way of life, specific culture. The typical picture of poor peasants of Matera is displayed and the big plus is the audio in English.

Great insight into the lives of people from the past - from the ancient past and the relatively recent past as this one was lived in until the 1950's or so. Great for all ages, cheap entry - well worth it.
