Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We rented a car and visited most of the small towns in the Province of Abruzzo. Fantastic! If you love mountains and scenery, cheap food and vino, this is the place to go! People are so nice! When in the little villages, just ask where's the best place to eat cheap and surely someone will guide you. Also visited Pacentro, (Madonna's family origin), Castel del Monte, where The American was filmed (George Clooney). Wildlife, castles, old churches, etc; nice attractions in Abruzzo!

I went on a blind camping date to the Abruzzi's. Not really, but I had never heard of it and met a handful of friends there for a camping trip. I had the most amazing experience camping. Our campsite was literally 20 feet from the National Park Lake which was a beautiful green....yes, I said "Lake". We were surrounded by mountains everywhere and the Italian people we met were amazingly courteous. That was last June and I'm leaving tomorrow to go on another weekend trip there which will make it my 3rd camping trip there in one year. It is convenient that I live here in Italy but I WILL be leaving soon and I must say it is by far one of the most beautiful and fun countrysides I've ever been too!!!

If you need a reason to leave Rome or Milan and Florence here it is. If you are a wilderness person for hiking go no further. This is why Italy has remained as it should be. Given a choice between visiting the Vatican and Rome or going to this park in central Italy to explore the Apennines you should know what my choice would be. I discovered this place on the map first and foremost by accident as I was looking for points of geography that I had not known about.Three years of college level Italian do not prepare you for this discovery. But they did help me learn new vocabulary words. I was told that bears can be seen here. I did bring my binoculars and used them. Train transportation was convenient for me. I had a eur-rail train pass. Tiburtina Station is where I picked up the train to Avezzano. Bus transportation to the center of the park is available. But do not allow the distance to keep you from going to see this magnificent park. Certain towns are worth seeing and stopping for making a good exploration at Sulmona or Barrea and Pescasserolli becomes a ritual worth repeating often. My visit in central Italy took place many years ago. I had seen enough of Milan or Florence and Rome. It was long before the range of calendar dates suitable for indicating the time of my visit were made available for completing this review. I recall seeing snow still on mountain tops. Coming in from the eastern part of the country like the Marche region is different but worth-while. I have liked the Adriatic segment of Italy as much as the next person. Good landscapes for hiking I assure you. My home town was settled by large groups of Italian immigrants from this central part of Italy as well as from other parts of the country. These people constructed an Italian center early last century. I had gone for many years for dinner in my home town at the Ristorante degli Abruzzi as part of a nutritional ritual that became a well practiced habit to pretend that somebody from my Italian class would follow me there. No such luck but there was a large map of the central part of Italy on the wall as an introduction to the Abruzzi region. That map for me was my first attempt last century to make in-roads to beginning to learn about this region. It was prepared and written in Italian. The same map is on the same wall today. This is how I began to learn about the park. So as an adolescent and young adult I had known about this park and the central part of Italy by eating spaghetti dinner at the club. This tradition was a part of the Italian-american community in my home town. If there was a second class of solid reasons to explain how I became an Italian for travel here it was. So many towns had great views of the distant landscape. I was traveling alone. I would suggest that you bring with you a companion for hiking. When I arrived at the park I knew what I was getting into. I suggest that you read about this region of Italy. Certain knowledge about flora and fauna from central Italy is necessary. Now this was a high energy walking experience for me. Certain physical conditioning is needed with good muscle power. This is not for professional couch potatoes. Leave your ice cream cones and pet dogs at home. High mountains made my visit so much more exciting. I was impressed with the forests. I would suggest that you stay there for at least two days maybe three. It was like being in a science lab for ecological reasons. Protecting the environment made sense to me. Photography is essential so do it.

I frequent the beautiful Park for years, cheered by the hospitality and kindness of the inhabitants. On this occasion I went from Sunday evening, September 29th to today, October 5th, to avoid the bad experience of a weekend in May 2022 with droves of motorcyclists who drove at least twice the speed of the roads of the park. However, even on this occasion I witnessed incredulously a traffic of motorcyclists, buses, lorries and cars at speeds far exceeding the limits of 50 and 30 kmh. In fact, a small minority respect speed limits. Also this morning returning I crossed at least 10 racing cars, I think Porsche, go up the road from Gioia dei Marsi to Pescasseroli at outrageous speeds. Two years ago, I wrote to the park authorities to point out the total lack of controls to enforce the many warning signs about the speed that kills, without receiving a Response. The only checks are carried out at Carabinieri checkpoints with the sole purpose of checking the documents of those who Guide, as last Wednesday when I was stopped going down from Opi to 20 kmh. It is unacceptable that in a natural park the roads are treated like a racing circuit, in the total lack of preventive controls, in the guilty indifference of the park authorities. Despite the many animals in the park, including bears, killed on the park's roads, as well as human casualties. An unforgivable shame.

Picinisco is one of the main entrances to the Park. From there visit Prato Di Mezzo and make the ascent to Monte Meta to see the Adriatic and the tyrhenian Seas as well as Ischia. Best guides to be found in Picinisco. Bears, deer, wolves, foxes, wild boar, eagles and lost more to be seen.

Loved walking in the still unspoilt countryside. Lots of shady beech and pine woods. Stayed in Pescasseroli, which was a convenient centre with lots of organised walks from 'Ecotours' in the centre of the small town. Lots of wildlife. (Need to go out at night with Ecotour guide to possibly see bears or hear wolves.) Meadows full of flowers in the summer. Food usually authentic. Helps to know some Italian as English is not widely spoken.

Easy to reach from Rome without a car. Trains leave Tiburtina every 2 hours to Avezzano and are about 7 euros. From Avezzano you can buy bus tickets to Pescasseroli [the town in the heart of the park] for 5 euros, either on the bus or at the bus station in Piazza Kennedy (right outside the train station). Not a day trip, more of an overnight, but definitely worth it. Amazing hikes; I went during the end of September and we got to hear dears braying and watch them fight with each other.

The area of the park include high mountains, lakes, woods and little towns with a typical flavor.
Sulmona is a nice town with its central street cover with small stores with the typical Confetti made in form of flowers, dolls etc.
One of the small towns with beautiful views in Barrea with the lake and the mountains cover with snow.
Also Pescaserolli is a nice town and the center of the administration of the park.
We enjoyed the visit with the tour group, walked around and even were able to have a nice picnic in one of the park areas.

For an area synonymous with nature, the three national parks of Abruzzo,Lazio and Molise , comprise a bounty that has rewarded us every time we have visited. Two thirds of the park is covered with beech forest, unbroken expanses unique to the entire Apennine chain.
its always hard to encounter, the elusive wildcat, wolves and Marsican bears, seeing them is indeed a rare bonus. They seem to tolerate human intrusion,by moving up higher into the more inaccessible mountain peaks, which on own own is too difficult to assault. the elegant chamois of the Abruzzo show off their acrobatic skills by leaping from ledge to ledge among the ravines.
Up here at 9500 ft,you share the Calderone Glacier and the calcareous environment of the Gran Sasso,an area with a wealth of karsic phenomena, such as,subterranean caves,ravines,pot-holes and poners, deep holes that swallow the waters of streams & lakes. this terrain is set off by an extensive forests of the Monti della lage: beech, chestnut and oak trees whose forerunners were planted in the days of the Romans.
According to Pliny, the majella was the"father of mountains",imposing and wild, sheltering Palaeolithic hunters & gatherers, hermits and later, brigands and robbers.
So,whose afraid of the big bad wolf?
In the heart of the Abruzzo National Park is a hidden sanctuary, inhabited by mysterios divinities that cannot be seen by the eyes of men. This is the Camosciac nature reserve, established in 1921,where bear and wolf, rediscovered divinities of primitive nature, have found their last refuge.
I haven't skied for years but i am told, that skiers have a field day at Campo Imperatore, the best ski resortin Abruzzo, where moonlight works its magic on the houses of Pietracanela.a small village nesting among the most beautiful mountains of the park.
Put that onto the next "must visit" list.

I have just come back from a holiday in the Abruzzo region, Italy and can honestly say this is one of Italy's hidden gems! Amazingly beautiful landscapes and not hugely touristy which is exacting what I wanted.
I went on a Gastronomy holiday with a firm called Frui (www.frui.co.uk). They had been recommended to me by a friend who had taken a photography holiday with them and so I thought I would give them a go. I am not one to overly praise for no reason but I can genuinely say that this holiday surpassed all of my expectations - it was fabulous!!! Excellent hosts, amazing food and true insider knowledge of a beautiful region. From pasta making to early morning truffle hunting in the countryside and to for me, the highlight being a wine tasting and dinner in the most magnificent wine cellar I have ever seen made this trip unforgettable. Far exceeded my expectations and worth every single penny!!

Hi!
We're planning a visit on September 2018, and I've seen in the site that during 2017 there were entrance restrictions in that time of the year. Do you know if there are similar restrictions this year, or is trekking possible without a guide? Thanks!

HELP?
