About
The Fortuna House will take you to the domestic environment of the Roman Cartagena during the first century. The different rooms that formed the house, the dining room where the family celebrated the banquets, the salon in which the lord of the house received his visitors or to the bedrooms and private part of the house. Their objects of personal adornment, chandeliers, dishes, among others, will help you understand the fashions and customs of the time. At the same time, you will be able to admire the beauty of its murals and mosaics with a variety of reasons such as the Swan - image of the house -, swastikas, flowers or pomegranates. All laden with a great mythological symbolism.

This doesn't take very long, but it gives you a nice feel of how the well-to-do lived in Roman times. Multiple room with enough artifacts, furnishings and such to help understand the home and residents. There's enough English information to explain what you are looking at.

This site was difficult to find, however we persevered and were rewarded with an excellent example of life in Roman times. The house and street are clearly described and visible from the walkways. The frescoes and tiled floors are very well preserved. The entrance cost was minimal; 3 Euros each and the staff are extremely friendly and informative. The fellow at the desk suggested going to the end of the museum and working backwards saying that the informative text at the beginning of the tour would make more sense - he was right. We had been to Ephesus and missed seeing the Terraced Homes and were told this sight would be similar. Well worth the visit!

We visited the Casa de la Fortuna (House of Fortune), during a one day trip to Cartagena, we had bought a group ticket to three Roman based attractions (Barrio del Foro Romano, Casa de la Fortuna and the Amphitheatre). This was the second attraction on our visit and we did not find it easy to locate at first though our route did take us through some of Cartagena’s interesting streets and open spaces.
The site is the rediscovered remains of a wealthy merchant’s house and is located below street level in what feels like the basement of a more modern building. The remains consist of a number of rooms and also a section of adjoining pavement, there are some fine examples of wall paintings and fresco’s and also some original Roman signage marked into the floor viewable through a perspex floor panel. On the day of our visit, the interior was quite gloomy and the site guide explained that they were having troubles with the lighting.
There are a good number of information boards around the building with (English texts) explaining the significance of each room in the house and giving artist impressions of the building interior when in use. After passing through some of the rooms, the house opens out into a larger area where there are some video presentations running and also a large floor to ceiling screen depicting a Roman street scene with the road leading away from the site. Also in this area was a set up scene of a furnished room in the house.
The site guide on the day of our visit was a very helpful lady who was able to further explain aspects of the house in both Spanish and English. If you are interested in Roman history or just like to marvel at old ruins the House of Fortune is worth a visit, there is plenty of information available as you pass around the home of a Roman Carthaginian family.
Would certainly recommend a visit.

From the outside, at street level, you wonder what there is to see, but when you descend the stairs it soon becomes clear. The lady at the reception desk was very helpful and, as it wasn't very busy, left the desk to explain and give us extra information - in English! The remains of the Roman house and street are clear to see and info boards are very informative. You are also given a concise, colourful leaflet with your entrance ticket. We booked three sites together which gave a discount - you don't have to visit all three on the same day.

This was my wife's favorite place we went in Cartagena since she liked seeing the remnants of an ancient Roman house. The site itself is underneath an apartment building and is dimly lit so it can be difficult to see at times. You wander freely and there are signs and videos explaining what you're looking at.

Hola all,
At the end of our 14 day vacation we make a top 5 list of experiences and this place made it on 2 people's list. It really is amazing to have a Roman house laid out before you. Make sure to visit this unique experience.

We bought a combined ticket to visit 5 sight for 15E. We love Roman ruins. This was well laid out with very pretty the frescos. The other nice thing, no one else was there. They all are at the theatre. Which is a shame, I found this better then the theatre- it is more original. We found it easy to find, you have to follow the arrows leading you to the entrance-which is in a odd location. The only thing is, having been to Rome & Ephesus you do not have the wow factor. But none the less interesting.

We nearly did not bother with this museum, that would have been a mistake, as this was the highlight of the holiday. Basically it is a 2000 year old ruined house found beneath the streets of Cartegena, along with the old roman roads. The exhibit is really well laid out as you walk round the house a room at a time on glass floors, so you can observe every detail under foot. The darkness really takes you back in time and you can imagine being there in the house. There is a great educational video to watch to really emphasise who lived there and what they got up to - extremely interesting and absorbing. Please do not miss this, which at 2.50 euros entrance fee is an absolute bargain for the experience.

This is slightly off Calle Mayor so you might want to pick up one of the excellent maps from the tourist office at the harbourside end of the street. It's definitely worth finding. It's beautifully and imaginatively presented and allows you to get a feel for how such a house would work, including in the context of a roman street grid. The highpoint is some excellent wall murals. Like most TA contributors we did a trifecta of roman sites, all on one ticket. You might want to note that if you change your mind which three you might want to visit the staff are happy to do so - that's what we did at this site.

This home of a wealthy resident during the Roman Period is located below the current city. After descending some stairs, you enter an ancient world with well defined rooms, mosaics on the floors and fresco remnants on some walls. An audio visual system and displays are used to help you understand exactly what you are looking at and how life was living here. There is an actual street just outside the entrance still partially preserved.
