- Seeking True QualityEurope4,803 contributionsWe used the metro regularly and were satisfiedWe used the metro during our five-day stay in Madrid in various circumstances. We bought a card at the ticket vending machine at the Ciudad Lineal station and filled it with a number of rides. As permitted, the two of us used the same card - we handed it between us after passing the barrier. It was easy to navigate the network and change the lines. The waiting time for the trains was very convenient.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2023
- BrigetteAustralia477 contributionsOne of the best Metro systems in the worldOne of the best metros in Europe ! As convenient as the Hong Kong MTR. I don’t speak Spanish and travelled solo, I felt safe (security patrols everywhere) and easily navigated myself via Google map and the signs are clear. The stations are cleaner than other stations in nearby countries. The ticket machine has different language options and easy to use, can buy single trips - unlike other systems which forces you to buy travel cards of multiple trips.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 27 October 2023
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,408 contributionsClean, efficient and extremely cheap with Tarjeta MultiMadrid metro is a great option to travel around Spain capital in a clean, safe and efficient way. First advice is to buy the Tarjeta Multi card at the machine kiosks at every station. The card itself costs 2,50 Euros, a one time cost, unrefundable. Load your card with 10 viajes (trips) for 6,10 Euros - it means every ride costs 0,61 Eur which is a bargain. The card works on both, metro and bus and you can easily reload again. Downside is there's no time limit, so if you need to change metro/bus for one direction you must spend two trips from your card.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2024

We bought the 5 day tourist pass and taking into account single trip prices we loss money on it but you have the peace of mind. The system is pretty clean and easy to figure out. To and From airport was probably the best usage of it. We were centrally located so we could walk to most places faster than using the metro but it saved the legs toward the end of the trip.

Madrid is well served by public transport and the Metro is a vital part of it. The key is to buy a card (machines at stations) then add journeys. Single journeys vary. Most trips for tourists are Zone A and 10 trips is just over 12 Euros. These can also be used on the buses and some overground. The machines also operate in English and take cash or credit cards the stations are pretty logical and easy to navigate. They mostly have lifts for people with mobility problems, buggies etc.

Super easy to use, well sign posted (British tourists who can't speak Spanish) and very clean! Changes from line to line are clear, loads of escalators with very few stairs, mainline stations well signposted. You need to buy a pass 2.5 Euros, which basically lasts forever, and you can put as many tickets as you want onto the pass; no photos needed, and the machine gives you a plastic card which you can then use over and over again to top up. There were 4 of us travelling around Madrid, and we all used the same pass, just handing it backwards and forwards at the barrier. It's cheaper if you buy a batch of tickets, (10 trips for 8.50) and there's an extra ticket that can be bought on the machine if you're going to the airport. Although not everyone was wearing masks, there is an announcement to suggest that people wear masks (at the time of visit in Oct '22 we had to wear masks on Iberia flight into Madrid, but nowhere else). Top tip, there's a little swing handle on the door to open and close, different from other metro systems, and also, keep bags / wallets / phones etc safe. We didn't have any problems, but I wore a cross body handbag inside my jacket just to feel more secure. Really recommend for getting about, and easy map to follow.

One of the best transport systems in the world, and among the cheapest. It has seen better days, but it is still in tip top condition. Forget the taxi to get to the center, there is a direct line from the airport that in no time, and for a minimal price, will take you right straight into the centre of Madrid.

I cannot say enough about using the Metro in Madrid. As in any large city, to see a lot of it, the best way is to use the most efficient, most economical and to get the most local feel of the city, you use their metro system. The Madrid metro is clean, safe and right up there at the top with the best of them, around the world. We always use the metro everywhere we have traveled all over the world, as long as they are safe. It is smart traveling and we see so much more in less time. Thank you Madrid for helping to making our visit great!

Took the metro from the airport to central Madrid. Easy to use, staff is always around willing to help and the train cars are very clean. The extensive metro network covers virtually every area of the city and numerous suburban neighborhoods. Ticket machines are user-friendly and operate in several languages. Probably the most economical way to travel in/around Madrid.

The price of travelling with metro is correct, BUT I especially recommend that if you are from abroad DO NOT use your bank card at the ticket maschine just CASH! When you buy a Public Transport Card (TTP) and tickets, 3,5 euro per item will be charged on your card over the normal purchase-price. I bought a TTP with 2 ticket (6.10 euro) and the system charged further 3 x 3.5 = 10.5 euro "service fee". If you pay with cash (euro) at the maschine, than you will have not problem.

Take the Metro Folks...
While this was my second visit to Madrid I was traveling alone and was unsure about navigating the train system in Madrid. Yet once I picked up a map of the Metro at the local station I realized how simple it was. I even used the ticket machine which provided a card with 10 prepaid trips. Also, the Metro is quite clean and safe. Within minutes I was on my way to an area of Madrid called La Latina where there is a giant Flea Market every Sunday. If you ever need to pick up souvenirs or unique gifts for family and friends this is the place to go.
