Top ways to experience La Latina
The area
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

We wandered into this restaurant in Barajas neighborhood, and had a great time. We had a light meal, the patatas bravas were top notch. we enjoyed ham and machengo cheese plate, an artichoke dish -- then we had three desserts! The waiter was very friendly. It seemed to be a neighborhood place.

The neighbourhood is less crowded than the central part of Madrid, which is great for those who tend to grow tired of the noise to the point they need a break. The streets are quite narrow, with plenty of charming buildings. A great place :)

Wandered through the neighborhood at as we wound down our day long walking tour of Madrid. Wish we hadn't have run out of steam so could have enjoyed the area a bit more.

This is a real special part of the city. Narrow back streets with great bars and restaurants, it's really atmospheric. The flea market on Sunday is amazing all the usual market stalls plus the second hand, antique area is great to walk around.

This is very nice neighbourhood with lots of refurbished old houses. It feels very safe and easy to walk around here.

You can also find lots of Tapas bar here too.

La Latina was the base of our visit to Madrid. There were many tapas restaurants around here, and the metro was close by. A very fun neighbourhood with a great vibe.

We stayed in LaLatina as a base for exploring Madrid on foot. Very safe. La Rastro market on Sunday is unlike any market I've seen before. Be sure to find the area where the kids are bargaining for soccer cards.

Very much enjoyed the La Latina area of Madrid. It is one of the oldest or the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Enjoyed staying, eating and visiting in this area. Lovely winding streets and many older buildings.
