Top ways to experience La Latina
The area
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
How to get there
  • La Latina • 4 min walk
  • Puerta de Toledo • 7 min walk

Barrio De La Latina is the oldest neighbourhood in Madrid and is my favourite barrio to visit .
Famous for it's old winding streets bristling with pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants plus great looking buildings ,it's a fun and vibrant neighbourhood that draws in the crowds ,I tend to gravitate to this district every day ,at night Monday to Sunday this area is bouncing ,if you're planning a holiday to Madrid it's an area to most definitely check out.

La Latina in Madrid is in the oldest neighborhood. So many exciting things to do here. The most fun to explore here includes tapas, churches and museums.

This is a small triangular Barrio that is sandwiched between Arganzuela to the west and south, Lavapies to the east and Austrias to the north.
Serviced by the metro station of the same name, La Latina is synonymous with beers and Tapas in Madrid and is home to multiple bars and restaurants packed into its narrow streets. Exceedingly popular at weekends when it is elbow room only to order at a bar, the two main streets that are home to the majority of the bars and restaurants are Cava Alta and Cava Baja.
Then on Sunday this district is home to the El Rastro flea market which runs the length of Ribera de Curtidores and adjoining streets, but the advice is to get here early for that as it gets extremely bustling and busy from mid day onwards.
We enjoyed strolling around here and the neighbouring barrio of Lavapies, another interesting area that is trying to balance being one of the lowest rent areas in Madrid and the traditional district for immigrants to Madrid with the gentrification that is now taking place. One recommendation is to make a small diversion from the market to visit the Mercado de San Fernando, an interesting traditional covered market which is home to normal market stalls and bar and Taberna stalls.

Do not book the BNBHolder "Amusing La Latina" apartment at Calle Carnero 12D in Madrid. In order to enter or exit the apartment, you must always use an electronic lock that can only be opened and closed by accessing an internet link via cell phone, which does not always work. This is a safety violation. Also, the front door gets stuck and will not open easily. They advertise the apartment as having a terrace and an elevator. It has neither. It is a ground-floor apartment. The so-called "terrace" is actually a ground-floor patio in a dark and narrow courtyard that receives no sunlight. They advertise the apartment as having a second bedroom. It does not. They have a set of bunk beds in a hallway. Also, BNBHolder did not tell us that there is a steep drop from the front door to the sidewalk, or that we could hear every person or car that passed by, or that the glass doors lacked sound insulation to keep out street noise. Also, basic essentials in most apartments were lacking. There was no clothes drying rack, no ice cube tray, no corkscrew and no step stool for reaching shelves in the kitchen and bedroom. Also, the apartment does not have a table or chairs. Instead, they have a couch and low coffee table in the living room, which is the only place in the apartment to sit. We stayed here on April 14, 2023 and left after one night of a ten-night reservation. [Note: We originally reserved an apartment from BNBHolder on Booking.com called "Stunning Terrace Centre" for April 14 through April 23, 2023, but just before our trip, were informed that the apartment was unavailable due to an emergency. BNBHolder offered us a refund or their only available apartment, namely their "Amusing La Latina" apartment at Calle Carnero number 12D.]

A neighborhood with a lot of history, today it has a wide variety of restaurants and bars to go at night or during the day. The gastronomic proposal is very attractive

It’s a busy street so be prepared to hike up and down the hill. Lotsa clothes and house decor. It’s nice to be there early to avoid very large crowds. Good to visit 🏨

La Latinas didn't wow us as much as expected - charming in some ways, but was hoping for more. We probably only enjoyed because walked it with a private guide to help make some of the history/stories come alive. Some hidden gem places/churches but other buildings quite quaint. We had the time after exploring Austrias area, but I wouldn't say it's a must-see area if limited on time.
