Why An Artichoke?
Feb. 2020
We were very curious about why a fountain with a giant artichoke was a thing. Admittedly in Australia, we have a quirky national obsession with big models and sculptures (many of them also fruit and veg). There’s the Big Banana, the Big Prawn, Big Merino, the Big Pineapple for starters. Ridiculously, we even have a 10 metre Big Potato (although I believe it’s currently for sale). So a big artichoke fountain caught our eye straight away.
Given that it was designed in 1781, it seemed unlikely that the sculptor shared the same Australian fascination with oversized novelty design. Instead it seems that the artichoke is in fact a significant symbol for Madrid mainly because it was a staple regional crop and sustained the farming classes throughout the winter. It probably helps that it is also a fertility symbol of fertility and considered an aphrodisiac by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
The fountain itself is in the Baroque style, made mostly from granite and white limestone. Water flows from bronze artichoke on top to two lower tiers. Beneath it, a group of children catch the water in a large bowl, their faces turned up to watch the cascade. On the bottom level Triton and Nereida, gods of the sea, hold up the Madrid crest. If you walk around to the back of the fountain, you’ll see the large and hirsute face of Autumn.

While strolling..
Jan. 2020
On your way to Palacio de Velázquez, you you will see it. A fountai of a Triton and a sea nymph, a theme rather strange compared to its name. Still, worth seeing, as much as the rest in Retiro park.

Fabulous features of Retiro Park.
Sep. 2019 • Friends
One of the standout landmark features of Retiro Park is Fuente De La Alcachofa ( Fountain Of The Artichoke ) adjacent to Estanque Grande Del Retiro.
Its a beautiful fountain in the Baroque style of architecture and looks amazing, the significance of the design is cool,in this region in days gone by the artichoke was the staple winter diet of the farming community so this beautiful fountain dedicated to the Artichoke is apt.
Easy to locate in Parque Del Retiro, most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a trip to this magnificent park .

Fountain of Articoke
Jul. 2019
Fuente de la Alcachofa Madrid is one of many fountains in Parque del Retiro, and is located just west of Palacio de Velázquez. The name of the fountain and as much as I stared at the it, I can't figure our the reference to the name.

The fountains features many classical elements such as Triton and a sea nymph together, and sculptures four cherubs supporting a small upper basin. Not outstanding, but worth a lot if in the area,

Another fountain in the park which is well worth seeing. This one is close to the lake and is usually crowded.

Pretty fountain in Retiro Park
Sep. 2018 • Couples
One of many lovely sights in the fabulous Retiro Park. The Fountain of the Artichoke was created in 1776 and was moved to Retiro Park in 1880. It’s a pretty fountain and is located at a central intersection of paths near the southwest corner of the grand pond. It’s not something to seek out if you’re not already exploring Retiro Park, but it is an enjoyable sight when in the park.

The Fuente de la Alcachofa is a nice spot for pictures while in Retiro Park. It is on one of the main paths so easy to find.

Dry fountain
Jun. 2018 • Solo
This is one of the many fountains inside Retiro Park. When I was there in June, there wasn’t any water at all. As such, the fountain lost its appeal and charm.
