Miró and Other Exhibitions
Nov. 2020 • Solo
This is a nice museum in Recoletos. It costs 3 Euros the entrance fee. They have a great exhibition on Joan Miro's paintings. When I went, there was a temporary exhibition on Lee Freedlander's pictures and portraits, really interesting!

Miró and more
Mar. 2020
This is a lovely art museum, and we enjoyed our visit very much. Though I would not include it on my “must-see” list for Madrid, a city that has so many wonderful art museums and galleries.

Located in a late-19th century palace between the Plaza de Colon and Fuente de Cibeles, the Fundación MAPFRE's gallery is modest in size (about 10,00- square feet). It focuses on beginnings of modernism and consists of a permanent collection with sixty-five works by Miró and temporary exhibits. Distributed on three floors, the exhibits are well-curated and displayed.

During our early March visit, we started with the permanent collection on the ground floor. I’m not a particular fan of Miró, but I enjoyed it.

The temporary exhibit occupied two floors and was excellent. It explored the similarities and differences between Rodin and Giacometti, two artists who never met. As I was going through the exhibit, I could only see mostly differences between the two artists. But even the contrast provided a new appreciation for Rodin, which was a nice complement to an earlier visit to the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia years ago.

Free Entry on Monday after 2 Pm to see 60 pieces of Miró art works!
Jan. 2020 • Family
Foundation Mapfy is accommodated in a building designed by the famous architect Agustín Ortiz de Villajos for the Duchess of Medina de las Torres which I found it underwhelming.
But if you love art, you will love the immersive displays kept here.
Is the place to watch full Surrealist Miró, Joanhe passed by Abstract, Cubism... Foundation Mapfy got a collection of 60 masterpieces to learn, to watch and enjoy! Especially there is
Free Entry on Mondays from 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm and general admissions only Euros 3 per person. I strongly recommend you to have half hour stop here in case you are having lunch at the nearby restaurant liked I did. But if you ask me if this worth a special detour to come and visit, I will have to say no unless the tempeory exhibition is extraordinary. So please check it up before making any decision.

Wonderful Boldini Exhibition
Dec. 2019
My wife and I saw this exhibition and thought it was one of the best exhibitions in the city at this time. The paintings were made at the end of the 19th century and many of paintings about the people painted were very beautiful.

Always worth looking up. I have never seen a bad exhibition here. Most have been excellent
Nov. 2019 • Solo
The Mapfre is always on my exhibition checklist. From the pleasant enough courtyard and ticket booth you go into a dark entrance with a security machine leading straight into the shop past the usually blocked stairs going up. That perhaps doesn't look particularly promising, but never fear, the exhibition space comprises ample galleries on the ground and 1st floor which provide a sense of journey for special exhibitions as the galleries each have their own character and the visit is broken up by taking a massive lift to the first floor. In addition there is basement gallery space devoted to their standing Miro exhibition. Fine, probably wonderful if you like Miro's work. I usually skip revisiting the Miro, but I have seen many astonishing exhibitions at the Mapfre. The current Boldoni exhibit is no exception. As usual the paintings are well displayed, the lighting is excellent with the exception of a couple of corners, so no nasty light reflections to ruin your photos which are still permitted. The information boards are always well written and usually available in english as well. They invariably manage to source an impressively representative collection of the featured artist, supplement with other artists of the same period or school which makes for great context. Even the merchandise selection in the small shop is usually exhibition appropriate and of good quality.

Boldini exhibition a treat! To Jan 12/2020
Sep. 2019
I'm not usually thrilled about bank-run galleries. They're usually a pile of third rate crap put together for a tax write-off. But the Boldini exhibition was a real treat. Whoever curated this display did an excellent job. Through academic styles to impressionism, to more avant garde explorations, a journey through joy. I guess high-society portraits paid the bills for Boldini, but whatever he painted was totally infused with happiness. Really uplifting. Also included were great paintings by Masriera, Sorolla, and more. See it while you can. There is also some Calder and Miro in separate galleries. And only 3 euro for the lot! Recommended even for non-art enthusiasts.
