Madrid has many of these open court-type spaces and this is just a taste of one. Not very noteworthy but great to stumble across.

We stayed in this barrio. It's quite fun. A labaryinth if one way streets with hills and lots of older buildings. Seemed safe enough but appears edgy on surface at night. Go during the day and wander around the barrio.

Kids playing in the evening. Bums sitting outside drinking and smoking and leaving alcohol bottles scattered everywhere. We were in the area for a week and walked through the plaza morning, evening and At night. It didn't feel unsafe but I can't imagine coming specially...More

We had an apartment Calle de Amparo in Lavapies. We travelled as three adults and two children and had no problems in this neighbourhood. Some other reviews mention the ethnic diversity of the area and the use of hard drugs, but we never experienced anything...More

This is the center of the non-touristic city life. Active all-round the clock. Shops, restaurants, city residents and refugees.

The main reason to come here is to visit the Carrefour supermarket which is open 24/7 and has been nicely upgraded this year. The neighborhood is a diverse mix and interesting but the square is usually occupied by " interesting people" who you may not...More

We booked an apartment in the Lavapies neighborhood of Madrid with some reservations after reading a few reviews that spoke of the ethnic diversity of the area and the supposed open drug use. After spending two weeks there this month, we would go back in...More

After reading reviews was a little dubious to visit the area so initially went through the day. Yes it is different from the main tourist areas such as gran via and sol but definitely worth a visit. We were advised that their was a festival...More

Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a
different country ... except it's hard to tell which
one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with
Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in
traditional African clothing convene outside their
businesses for long chats, and people shout to each
other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among
ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and
