Top ways to experience Museo de Historia de Madrid and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

    Great free museum
Stumbled on this wonderful museum - (there are two pages for review here for some reason) so don't be fooled by low reviews. It was brilliant, the amount of artifacts, paintings and history of Madrid was brilliant. Most info in English to read, don't think there are English speaking tours? there are Spanish ones, but there's still plenty to read and view -well worth visiting.

    Peaceful and interesting
This museum delivers exactly what it says it should: a history of Madrid. It’s small, but very well curated, and FREE. We spent about 1.5 hours in it, very restful because it wasn’t crowded at all. If you like small, focused museums, it’s a winner.

    Hidden Gem Must!
Stumbled upon this hotel by accident and on a whim decided to enter. So glad we did! For any history buff, this place is a must. Great chronology of the development of Madrid w some macro-Spain/European history thrown in for good measure. The pieces on display are stunning. Everything from model recreations of palaces and city streets to actually used devices, equipment, and furniture of Madrileños gone by. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Great museum with plenty to see, presented well in chronological order explaining the origins & history of the city.
Some great pieces and details proved in English & Spanish.
Staff were friendly & helpful.
Museum wasn't busy ( Wednesday Afternoon) so was able to really take some time to appreciate the items.

This is a museum that covers the history of Madrid from when it became the capital of Spain in the 16th century up to the early 20th century. There is a lot to see and helpfully a great deal of the explanation is in English. Allow 2 hours.

We love city museums and Madrid's is right up there. Less than half a mile north of Gran Vía, housed in a beautiful building. Four floors of its history with interesting items, paintings, china. We thought this museum much superior to the decorative arts one. Free admission. English descriptions throughout. An elevator. Really nice staff too. Lockers for one Euro which is refundable. Bring a coon.

The Museo de Historia de Madrid is a small, but excellent museum of local Madrid history. The only downside to this museum is that not everything has English description. On the upside, it's free and there's more than enough English explanation for so many of the exhibits, it's barely worth complaining about.

The collections of fans, porcelain and gallery dedicated to the Dos de Mayo uprising are outstanding. A special honourable mention goes to the "Diana and Endymion" sculpture which should not be missed.

Another hidden gem in Madrid that a little off the main tourist circuit.

After our walking tour and learning about the history of Madrid and Spain this again small and free museum with an amazing entrance consolidated our knowledge of the history of Madrid. Well set out with so much porcelain, clothing and artefacts from Madrid's and Spain's colourful history and lovely way to spend a few hours.

This was my second visit to Madrid and my first visit to this museum and it provided a great means of connecting top Madrid sites to their history. I especially liked seeing artworks depicting historic events in Madrid, and I now have a better appreciation for the plazas, parks, and streets and their significance over time.

A small but interesting museum with a notable model of the city. Has some temporary exhibitions but primarily focuses on the development of the city, the changing neighbourhoods through maps, paintings and common objects in use at various times.
Well worth a visit for anyone interested in the changing city.
