Came here for dinner one night, but we were very late. However, we were able to get something at almost every stand. What wonderful food! It is tapas style, so be prepared to stand and eat. The vermouth and the wine is cheap, and the food is all so beautiful, you want to eat everything! I would recommend coming on... More

This site doesn't take much time to walk through and grab a bite to eat. There is not much seating in the market thought and it was a bit crowded around lunch time. Easy location near Gran Via, Plaza de Espana, and the Royal Palace.

What a beautiful stop. We almost walked by but my guide book recommended it. It was well worth it. Bring your appetite.

Sample the desserts, have a few drinks, and enjoy this unique environment. I've been coming here since my first time in Madrid and I come back every time.

The variety of tapas, wine, sangria, paella, desserts, fresh fruit available is outstanding. It is bustling with people eating at all hours. Seating can be difficult but not impossible. Their prices are a bit high. Great ambiance.

Definitely a must-visit if you are in Madrid. They have everything from typical tapas to sushi and dessert. I particularly enjoyed the black paella.

It's one of the best places to visit in Madrid and definitely the best one from all mercados in this city (and there is few more). Lovely place to have a lunch though quite busy at all times, difficult to find free table but possible for patient ones. Recommend the sushi stand at the end on the left side, close... More

Mercado San Miguel offers a range of gourmet cuisine, produce and food stalls amid a warm, bustling atmosphere. However, my outing was soured by its profligate pricing. Small wrappings of takeaway ham came in at four times the cost of the equivalent 'ham to go' available at less ostentatious stores around Madrid. If money is no object, then by all... More

Well worth a visit. Every type of snack/ tapas. Great vibe. Can be expensive. Heaving at weekends. I especially liked the crab tapas. Wines and beers of all types available. Near Plaza Mayor and The Royal Palace.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
