This beautiful Neoclassical building is the seat of Santiago de Compostela city council and regional government of Asturia. The building is built on a rectangular plane, with an almost 90m length of the façade. The lower level has a covered arcade of twenty semicircular Romanesque arches on the sides and five lintels in the centre. Above this is the loggia of two upper storeys decorated with Ionic columns. Between these colossal columns there are door-type windows, opening to balconies along the entire façade on the first floor

Above the loggia are two curved pediments, and in the middle a triangular pediment. The latter depicts the Battle of Clavijo, when it was said that St. James intervened on the side of the Chritian army. The roof of the building is adorned with balustrades and above the pediment, crowned with the sculpture of St. James as a pilgrim.

Handsome arcaded building comprising one side of the main Cathedral square opposite the western facade of the cathedral. A good counterweight to the grandeur both of the Hostal des Reyes and the cathesdral itself. Backdrop to occasional improumptu concerts and street performances and an occasional shelter for very late arriving pilgrims with nowhere to stay.

Raxoi Palace is located on Praza do Obradoiro, in front of the famous cathedral. It is a classicist-style structure, and its construction was ordered by Archbishop Santiago Bartolome Rajoy Losada in 1766. Nowadays, Palacio de Raxoi is the seat of the Compostela City Council and some of the offices.

This is where you "end" your Camino. There were many people in the square having a reunion with people they met along the way. Lots of laughing and crying and cheers! The church facade facing this side of the square is under scaffolding, but still impressive.

The Raxoi Palace is located in front of the Cathedral in Plaza del Obradoiro.

It was commissioned by the archbishop Raxoi in 1766 and designed by the Frenchman Carlos Lemaur. There is a magnificent and elegant Neoclassic facade that supports itself on a granite colonnade with fourteen half-moon arches. That made its elegance and sturdiness that lasted for centuries.

Originally it was used as a seminary for confessors, but today it is the site of City Hall and the Galician government.

This Palace is very beautiful and definitely something to see inside.
It is also a very beautiful Parador and a wonderful place to stay!
It is also a place that stamps the passports of the those making the Pilgrimage to Santiao de Campostela. It is across the way from the Cathedral which is a must see, as well as the plaza, which always has something going on. Very peaceful at night!

This is in the Plaza del Obradoiro and after a night of tapas great wine and sightseeing, we discovered it. We did not know, but there is live entertainment every night (or at least every night we went by it). Great late night stop, people dancing and the music is great ! A must see. The Bishops quarters are across the square and it is rumored that he would like to move because of the music every night, LOL.

18th century neoclassical palace that currently is a seat of the city council. Beautiful facade. In the evening it is nicely illuminated and musicians entertain the tourists in the cloisters of the building. Good place to sit and enjoy the view to the cathedral. As far as I know it cannot be visited inside.

The Palace of Rajoy (or "Pazo de Raxoi", in the galician language) is one of the most beautiful and monumental buildings in enchanted Santiago de Compostela. It is located at "Praza do Obradoiro", the very very heart of the city, in front of the Cathedral and sided by the famous "Hostal Parador dos Reis Católicos". In neoclassical style, its construction started in 1766, under the command of Archbishop Bartolomé de Raxoy y Losada, envisaged firstly as a prison and a seminar. Now it houses the Council Hall and the Galician Government. In its central portic, reliefs portray the fictional Battle of Clavijo (that never took place). On its top, a fantastic equestrian statue of St. James in that same battle, when he helped the Christian Army to gain its victory against the moors led by the Emir of Córdoba. Legends of the cult of St. James ... Under the palace's arcades, almost every early evening, the fantastic "Tuna de Derecho de Santiago de Compostela", with its capes and laces, performs for tourists and locals the vast ibero-american songbook. Enjoy!
