It is a place to visit in the summer as in March it is freezing. The altar pieces are astonishingly over the top baroque while the wood carved choir behind the main altar is a rare treat. Perhaps it was because we had to wait for a mass to finish that we were too cold to tour the top part of the museum and that the lift was out of order.

Who is churches very impressive. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was next-door to the cathedral, Santiago to Compostela it would be a star. Unfortunately, with that level of competition it’s hard to come out number one but they gave it a really good shot. It is an extremely well built church very ornate, not quite to the same standard as the cathedral, but not far. We do actually have the old choir from the cathedral and the woodworking, and it is simply amazing. Personally, I think it’s the better of the two churches simply there’s a lot less people and you can actually get closer to things to be able to see him more clearly it also has interesting printing press and dies.

One of the best monastery/church visits we have made. Very informational, great access to behind-the-scenes church areas, and wonderful artifacts on display. Not a lot of information about the monastery, but the church visit was fantastic, including being able to climb up to the choir above the altar. Most signs were also in English, but not all. Well worth the 4€ entrance fee (for old peregrinos).

The Monastery is a marvellous hostel, of mostly private rooms for one or two persons. It is conveniently adjacent to the famous Cathedral de Compostela. The prices are very reasonable. The rooms are very clean and quiet. Hey, its a monastery.. Good meals (B,D only) are available in the dining room. It is a big residence. Good for big groups as well as couples, like us.

Quaint location, as it is a monastery so the rooms have their charm. Impeccable rooms with a beautiful view of the town. The bathrooms are quite small, as well as the shower. Beds are very comfortable. There is a heated towel rail, so you can wash clothes. Breakfast was not great, very little fresh, good-tasting food.

Perhaps it is one of the jewels of Santiago de Compostela, it has a guided tour that is highly recommended.

I think many people might oversee this Monastery very near the Cathedral but it is worth it going inside, the entrance is cheap and the altars are really very impressive. We enoyed it very much.

As we entered the Monastery, just behind the Cathedral, two gentlemen ahead of us buying tickets were asking “What will see?” The employee then said, and pointing to a poster behind her “THIS”. As you walk in the first 100 feet or so, just a few nuns habits and showing how over time they have changed. But all continue the black and white or the white and black. As you walk in a little further, the rooms open into enormously large spaces, with elaborate sculptures and paintings. Alters soar to the heights of three to four floors. Dimly lighted or backlit they are beautiful and unimaginable ornate. Placards give a timeline to their construction. All seemed to be several years. Many stairs to climb, and handrails seem few. This is worth a visit, to explore it all, several hours. On a cloudy and showery day, this turned out to be a great adventure. Recommend it to you.

We (2 adults, 2 kids) stayed in a hotel just passed this monastery, and walked in and out of the city 'proper' past the main door several times every day. Each time, thinking we would like to pop in for a few minutes and have a look around.
When we finally did 'pop' in..... we spent well over an hour looking around. We hadn't realised how interesting this place really was.
Very reasonable entry fee (€3 per adult, kids free), beautiful chapels, religious art and amazing choir area - all standard and as expected.
BUT go upstairs, see the details of the reconstruction work, the photographs of the 'before' choir area. Look down on the alter from above (if you are brave enough.... just look what's holding the balconies up and you might change our mind!) See the dome over a side church up close, before heading back downstairs and seeing a different angle. Look at the jewelled crucifixes and the various 'relics' which enthralled and entranced my kids in equal measure!
I fully expected to go in here and have a quick trot around before my kids starting complaining about being hungry/ bored/ need the bathroom, but there was so much to see that I nearly had to bribe them to get them out.
Yes the cathedral is the main draw. But here there are no loudspeakers telling you to be quiet, no one telling you to get out as mass is about to begin, no crowds milling around. Instead you are naturally awestruck, and reduced to a whisper. You are genuinely amazed by the alter and the intricacies of the artwork and intrigued by the displays upstairs.
Don't miss this. An absolute must. Do not miss.

The monastery is huge and it has many formidable works of art. However for me, the most impressive was the lower plant, where there is the chapel. You can see statues, relics, paints, diverse religious objects and in the last floor you can see a reproduction of a chore. However, I would not recommend to visit the Monastery the same day you visit the Cathedral museum, that would be overwhelming. Leave it for the second day.
