The cathedral is dedicated to St Thecla and is erected at the top of the acropolis or hill of the ancient city. Its construction began in the year 1171 and it was consecrated on 4 July 1331. Its foundations and later architectural development are located on the remains of an ancient Roman construction begun in the second quarter of the 1st century bc. and completed at the beginning of the Vespasian Empire (69-79 AD). The Cathedral is gothic in style. Its floor plan is in the form of a Latin cross, with three naves each with their own apses and transept. The head is of Romanesque tradition with half-point arches supporting the extension of the stone wall and pilasters following the new constructive techniques of the Gothic movement.

We headed to Tarragona on a day trip from Barcelona, with our primary destination the Amphitheatre. Once we'd seen that, we wandered the streets and followed the sign to the Basilica. This ended up being my favourite thing to see on our trip to Spain! This cathedral is absolutely stunning. It is massive, with so many different chapels, and you... More

Truly amazing as any church in Spain. For some reason Spanish churches are more spiritual and fascinating somehow. It's so quiet inside that it makes you feel in peace with yourself. That's magic.

Firstly, do get an audio guide as the stories especially about St Thecla are extremely interesting. This is a church where you can wander, look and listen and marvel at 11th and 12th century architecture. They didn't need modern technology to create great structures. Do look behind the main altar and walk the lovely cloisters.

We paid the extra 2 euros for the audio guide, and I highly recommend you do as well. The cathedral is beautifully presented, with many ancient artefacts and lots of art works. You will learn all about St Thecla and her many trials as you wander the 42 stations (yes, 42!) of the audio guide. Although it is a lot,... More

This is the biggest cathedral in the province of Tarragona. The interior is dominated by grey stones and dark wood. The side chapels in contrast are abundantly decorated and vary from early gothic to baroque.

We wandered through the streets of Tarragon on a recent visit and found this most remarkable basilica. The building with its fabulous facade is wonderful and the quality of the audio guide you can rent significantly enhances the visit. The audio allows you to tour the cathedral linking the numbers shown on the walls with the audio numbers. We viewed... More

We walked all round the city of Tarragona and visited the cathedral. It was constructed during the 12th -14th century and built on the highest point of the capital. It is not a difficult walk and the entrance is quite beautiful.

The building is impressive from the outside -and dominates the skyline- less so the interior but the cloisters are lovely.

So much to see -- I wish I had rented the audioguide! My daughter and I especially enjoyed the cloisters. A beautiful and interesting visit, even without the audioguide....
