The ensemble of Independence Square was formed in the middle of the XIX century on the site of the destroyed convent and gardens of the Augustinians. The harmony of the square is ensured by the unity of the facades of the houses around the perimeter. The square is surrounded by semicircular arches on the ground floor, and three floors with balconies and attics. Restaurants and shops are located on the ground floors, so the square is very lively in the evenings. We had dinner here too. The semantic dominant of the square is the monument to the defenders of Girona in the War of Independence of 1808-1809, installed here in 1894.

A nice place to sit and have a coffee or a drink watching the people passing by. Most cities in Spain have such a square, but this is a very nice one.

We enjoyed getting drinks here two evenings and just people watching. Its a beautiful square on the opposite side of the river from Old Town, lined with cafes. You need to arrive early to get a seat outside on the square at a cafe. The seats go fast and people sit there for hours!

A typical Spanish plaza which on Easter Saturday had a local brass band playing in the square to celebrate Easter and entertain the vast crowd.
It is hard to imagine what it looks like in normal everyday life but probably a great place to take a breather and enjoy some food.

This is a pleasant spot to sit and take in life in Girona.

There is a lot of seating in the central area around a statue and then bars and restaurants around the perimeter.

Lovely porticos on all sides, grand architecture and an imposing monument make for the most popular Plaza in the city.

Interesting that its origins were as the site of an old convent, Sant Agustí. Monumental is the impressive tribute at the centre to soldiers who defended Girona against the French in 1808 – 1809.

No, Placa de la Independencia is not a must-see in Girona - but it has its own rustic charm, and there are quite a few restaurants and bars around.

Ideal for lunch, snacks, dinner and drinks.

Very inviting Square with lots of outdoor cafes and shops. There was a Christmas market on the square - early December - with neatly organized stalls with lots of artisan and folkloric products.

Beautiful area of the city, a lot of interesting architecture. There is a large selection of cafes and despite the abundance of tourists, you can safely find a place to sit.

The square, surrounded by restaurants, bar and gelato shops, is alive with people both local and from elsewhere enjoying themselves, the bus of excitement is best in the evening from 7pm until 1am.
Be warned most of the restaurants are fully booked and it is therefore essential to pre-book a table if you really find the restaurant you want, although there are numerous outlet just outside the square in case toucan't get in.
