Top ways to experience Plaza del Sol and nearby attractions
The area
Neighbourhood: Gracia
Gracia literally stands out from the pack. It used to be an independent town until late into the 19th century. Though it’s just a short commute away from the centre, a visit here feels like you’re in a whole different city. The bohemian vibe has drawn many international artists to this area, resulting in a wide selection of galleries, live music and artsy boutique stores. The nightlife is centered around the vibrant Gracia’s plaças, where young and old gather to enjoy a drink outside. Carrer de Verdi, its main street, offers affordable restaurants and a movie theatre that screens new as well as classic films in their original language. However Gracia's greatest treasure lies just up the hill at Guell Park, where Antoni Gaudi's vibrant and revolutionary art sculptures stand atop unequaled views of Barcelona.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Too many people at all hours of the day. And now there is a hotel there also! What a disaster! A neighborhood place to relax in the sun has become a mob scene! Bummer.

I was recommended to an excellent tapas place on the corner of this square (called Sol Soler) and afterwards, I went out to see what held people to the square. I could soon see why. In the popular and trendy Gracia neighbourhood, Plaza del Sol is a buzzing vibrant place to spend time relaxing, catching up with folk, enjoying a drink, listen to music... There's an off-licence type of shop on one side where a bottle of cheap sangria or beer (they'll even provide you and your friends with cups at the checkout, just ask for them) so go pick up a bottle of something and go sit outside in the square for a couple of hours, enjoying authentic Barcelona :)

Nice and busy, interesting place for the tourists. You can find everything there: from restaurants and bars to shopping centre en museums nearby.

I visited this square hoping to simply relax. There were a bunch of people sitting on the floor, drinking out of glasses and cans!!! (which I understand it is forbidden in Barcelona). Others were sitting at tables int he middle of a square a local organization had brought. I asked what the matter was. A lady explained to me: The neighbors were tired of the noise, which surpasses in decibels the limits allowed by the EU and recommended by WHO. The square had stopped being a place for everyone to hang out and relax but a degraded public space. They were having a meeting at to send petitions and protests to the local government against the noise and illegal drinking on the streets. If you go to this neighborhood please respect the fact that people live there. Leave when bars and restaurants close and do not shout or talk loud as you leave. It's a very neighborly, welcoming place that wants peace and quiet, so please let's respect the fact that it wants to be this way. I liked the square, found the neighbors friendly but it was really too noisy and overcrowded.

Personally I don’t see a lot to attract me to Plaza del Sol however it is clearly popular.
I would suggest it is most popular with those looking to save a little money and bring their own food and drink without having to pay for the same at a café.
I like squares with a family feel but there are a few children or few old people. It is primarily a 20+ group that seem to be eating and drinking peacefully.
Swing by and if the environment isn’t for you, go to any of the other nearby squares.

First of all, I’ve only just read the reviews from residents- and I must admit I wouldn’t be too happy about living around the square.
The above said, I’ve visited the place several times with my wife and children and although there is a bit of marijuana smell around and people sat on the floor drinking- I found the place really good fun.... we’ve sat down with everyone else on the floor (as well as seated in one of the bars/restaurants) and never seen any trouble or excessive noise...... but then I don’t live there, so my review is based on being a tourist as opposed to a resident.

The Placa del Sol is close to the Passeig de Gracia but with less tourists.
You have some nice shops in the quarter and find a lot of heartly people in good Mood.
The place itself is not special but the People and the nice little bars and restaurants create a special and relaxed atmosphere.
Perfect place for some Tapas and Drinks.

It's very popular between locals (under 25 years old) Too noisy after 20h, and it's no forbidden beers & pot. And get a table could be diffcult.

This is a very pretty square in the older part of town. Nice picturesque architecture around as well as lots of places to eat and drink. We spent some lovely time here.
