The area
Neighbourhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

El Fossar de les Moreres is located next to Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar (Cathedral of the Sea).
Under the paved square is a cemetery with fallen defenders in 1713-14 in the war of spanish succession.
The monument, designed by Alfons Viaplana, was placed on the square in 2001.
An eternal flame is burning on the top, as a permanent tribute.

The square is stark and has nothing other than this red thin curved spire which in itself is not that interesting but its simplicity had some resonance as it symbolised Catalonian independence. It is probably misunderstood and neglected by most tourists but worth a look and in so doing study the history of the independence of this state of Catalonia.

I would not have given this location a second glance, had it not been for a our tour guide, who explained that we were standing on a mass grave of tens of thousands of Catalan men and boys who were killed in 1714 as part of the uprising then. This is a significant location for the locals and an important moment in the region's history. Well worth a visit if you have someone who can explain what you are looking at and how important this is for the locals.

The Fossar de les Moreres is a memorial that stands in tribute to the defenders of the city in Siege of Barcelona in 1714 during War of the Spanish Succession. A war that result in a great loss of autonomy for the Catalans having backed the wrong side. The plaza was built over a cemetery where this monument was built over a cemetery where defenders of the city were buried, so this monument was erect both to remember the deaths and the rebirth of Catalan.
It far too abstract for most people and I suspect only Catalonians and those who looked up the history would understand it's significance. From a purely aesthetic point of view, my first reaction to this was, what the deuce is this supposed to be. So for this reason, I have to give it a lower score.

I don't get why this merits a TripAdvisor listing. It's a plaza on the side of the church, with a curved piece of metal and fire on top. Okay. What's next?

The are is simply stunning!
The square is so nice, on the side of Santa maria del mar ( one of the most amazing cathedrals of Barcelone).

Hearing about the meaning behind this monument offered a great insight into the Catalonian spirit. The fire never goes out.

The rather weird design of this memorial is attention-getting, but perhaps not in the most positive way. Looks quite a lot like a bent light pole with a small "eternal flame" at the top. Only upon reading the inscription do visitors get a clue that it is to commemorate those who died in the Siege of Barcelona during the Spanish War of Succession in 1713-1714.

The memorial was located in a plaza next to Santa Maria Del Mar and was built on top of an old cemetery. This cemetery held the remains of those who fought and died during the 1714 War of the Spanish Succession. An eternal flame burns as a reminder in a plaza with symbolic red bricks and granite walls to recall the bloodshed.

Modern memorial in the middle of a beautiful old area of Barcelona. Beautiful to see but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
