The area
Address
Neighbourhood: El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I admire Botero, his paintings and statues, so that’s why we went to see it, but I gotta say it was the first time in many years when we felt so uncomfortable in the neighborhood, where it’s located (and we lived in New York!). We visited between 4 and 5 PM and sat nearby to rest and saw very unpleasant situations and suspicious people which made us feel unsafe. We quickly took photos and left the area! So my advice- please don’t show up too late and be careful. The cat is a large bronze sculpture that is hard to miss. I liked it.

El Gat de Botero is a sculpture by the Columbian artist Fernando Botero. It’s a fun sculpture of a cat feature his signature Boterismo style of exaggerated and Rubenesque proportions.

A bit of a detour, but worth it for something a little different in Barcelona.

This odd little curiosity is located in the middle of an otherwise nondescript and empty (there is a child play area) plaza. We past by it several times when returning to our hotel and never noticed it until a random scan of Google Maps for interesting sites turned it up. It is fun for a quick picture and then you can quickly move on. The tough choice is which angle you use for the photo. Judging from Google images, many people prefer to take a picture this cat's undercarriage.

Not much to it other than it's an impressive large bronze statue of a cat. A guide told my group that luck comes to whoever touches its bell or balls. Something about returning to Barcelona if you do.
Cool statue, dont feel the need to go far out of your way to see it.

Fernando stands proud, Botero the sculpture has captured him in a larger than life. We got here by walking from the Los Ramblas area. Put on your walking shoes because Barcelona has a lot to offer.

I look for Botero's in every city I travel to. This one was a little difficult to find. It is in a park in the center of a neighborhood.

Love this sculpture with its playful atmosphere. Great spot to take pictures to send home and gives the area a joyous feeling often absent in other places. The art scene is an important part of the city and this should be viewed by all art lovers.
