The area
Neighbourhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you have spare time in Barcelona to explore beyond the main tourist sights, this little square is an interesting diversion. It’s not a must-see but if you are already at the Boqueira Markets, then it is only 3 or 4 minutes away, tucked away off Las Ramblas. It is equally close to the Cathedral.
We walked through the square each day because it was right by our accommodation.
The best time to go is the weekend. On the first & third weekend, a local artisanal food market is held here. It is only small but has natural foods, honeys, cheeses and wines. I was tempted by the natural, handmade candles. They had long thin, rolled tapers as well as little novelty candle owls and other animals. Around the side of the basilica, artists and painters also hold a small market each weekend.
The main feature of the square is the 14th century Santa Maria del Pi basilica. It is a large, dark, sombre looking church with a big multi-colored rose window in the centre. Unfortunately, the window is nothing much to look at from the outside because it’s covered with some sort of mesh cloth.
The church often looked closed when we passed so if you see it open, take the opportunity to pop in. There were no lines and no crowd. You can pay to climb the tower with a guide (although we missed out because I didn't know about it until later).
The best bit about the church was the curious display of 16th century ‘Giants’. It is worth popping in just to see these. As you step through the main entry door, there are 4 truly massive figures on display on your right. These were new to me. I’d not seen anything like them before and didn't know anything about them but there was a panel with information next to the display. The giants are part of a long tradition of street parades and celebration. On feast days, they were carried throughout the streets which would have been a grand spectacle.
A less dramatic, but equally historic feature in the square, is the central pine tree out the front of the church. There has been a pine tree in this square, on that very spot since 1568 (hence the name of the square).
Directly opposite the basilica, are two pretty pink houses decorated with traditional sgraffito. The Traders Guild is the prettiest. It dates from 1685 and is covered with white garlands and cherubs.
If you go in the evening, there are several small restaurants and bars, and often street performers, along the side of the church. In particular, we liked Bar Del Pi, a traditional looking tapas bar.

Located in the heart of the gothic quarter is this lovely square named after a pine tree that is in the grounds.
There is also a surprise that awaits, the church is fairly, bland with a dirty facade however inside it is home to one of the largest stained glass Rose windows in the world. well worth a visit.

The Plaza del Pi is a public square in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Like most public squares in Spain, it’s filled with cafes and restaurants to sit and watch the world go by. The square isn’t particularly significant, except that it’s the location of Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi. You’re likely to be in or passing the square when visiting the church, otherwise there’s no major reason to visit.

We have encountered this small placa on our walk through the Barri Gothic intending to observe the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi from the exterior (unluckily we had no time to visit the interior) and encountered this nice market selling local products like jam, honey and amazing chocolates! This has added further taste to our Barri Gothic afternoon! Recomended!!

As many will advise, the world of Barcelona gets more interesting if you remove yourself from the bustle of Las Ramblas and venture onto the side streets. Prices go down, shops are more interesting, and prices decrease. Plaza del Pi is an inviting area, and if you happen to visit on a weekend, you'll find a wonderful art market that is most enjoyable, even if you don't make a purchase. You'll also find a number of bars, cafes, and shops. This is just one of the many places to within easy walking distance off Las Ramblas.

This is an unassuming-looking cafe but inside there is a treasure trove on the walls for anyone even vaguely interested in history and Spanish history in particular. The staff are really friendly and a relaxing coffee break was made a little bit special with the mood of being away from it all and in another era.

A lovely square in front of the church to Santa Maria, we happened upon this after strolling into town after our morning at the Cuitadella park. A fortunate happening, it’s a lovely space.

When we visited, there were numerous cheese and jam vendors set up in small booths. They served various types of cheese in a paper container so that they look like French fries (we later discovered this presentation at other locations in the city). Regardless, we enjoyed walking around with the convenient snack and trying all the different cheeses, As a result of our tasting, we enjoyed one of the choices so much that we brought some back to our room for later consumption. We felt as though we got more of the true flavor of the culture on this off the track plaza.

The 'Plaza of Pine' has always had a pine tree growing there - just not the same one. Apparently, the current pine tree was planted around 1980.

The plaza is dominated on one side by the Basilica del Pi (Pine). One the opposite side is an example of Catalan artistry - a 300 year old example of decorative plaster work on the facade of a residential building. This is the best remaining example of this type of work in the area.

The centre of the plaza accommodates several market stalls that sell a variety of local products.

It is a nice little plaza that is worth a visit whilst walking through the Gothic Quarter.
