This large pink Modernist building is a fun stop on Las Ramblas and it will only take a minute or two. It’s known as the Umbrella House because the exterior is charmingly decorated with Oriental umbrellas and a dragon.
It might look odd today (and you half expect someone to come out the front door and burst into a chorus of ‘Singin’ In The Rain’) but the umbrellas have been a feature since the 1880s. It is quite remarkable that they have never been pulled down at some stage over the years.
They were put there for commercial reasons, rather than artistic decoration. They were basically advertising. In the 1800s, this was a popular umbrella store and in 1883 the owner, Bruno Quadros, decided decorate the store to help him sell even more umbrellas.
The Oriental design wasn't just a quirky whim. From the 1850s, there had been a craze for Japanese art and design sweeping Europe. Japan had been a closed country since the 1600s but started trading with the West again in the 1850s. Japan seemed very exotic and Japonisme suddenly became very ‘of the moment’. It was the height of fashion for to have Oriental styling. Artists experimented with it and women started appearing in dresses patterned with Oriental motifs, such as fans, flowers, and fish. So in fact the Umbrella House was very much in vogue.
It’s not open to the public so we only stopped here for a quick look from the street and a photo. You certainly wouldn’t go out of your way to see it, but it is about halfway along Las Ramblas, near the Gothic Quarter and just about everyone finds themselves here at some point. It’s opposite the Joan Miro pavement mosaic so you can stop to see both at the same time.

Walking with my girlfriend in Barcelona on Las Ramblas we passed Casa Bruno Quadros. This is a historic building in the city characterized by having been an umbrella factory, with the presence of several on the walls, with a dragon coming out of the wall with Japanese influence as well. Another beautiful building on Las Ramblas.

The Casa Bruno Cuadros is a building on La Rambla, close to the Liceu metro station. The building is one of many examples of Catalan Modernist buildings that can be found everywhere in the city. Although it’s modernist, there Neo-Classical elements such as the columns just underneath the cornice of the roofs. The most distinct element of the building are the multi-coloured umbrellas and fans on the facade and the sculpture of a Chinese dragon at the corner of the building. Oddly, the dragon also has an oriental fan on it’s back.
Worth a look if you’re on La Ramba, but I wouldn’t come specifically to see it.

Very beautiful 🤩 and strange at the same time, it has a dragon 🐉 and umbrellas on the walls of the building. Of course, it was the house of umbrellas back in the hay day 18’s but still standing tall and attractive.

As others have said, it used to be an umbrella shop in 1883. That's when Josep Vilaseca reconstructed the façade and added architectural elements inspired from Chinese and Egyptian culture. The dragon and the umbrella on the corner of the building was used to advertise the shop. You can almost imagine a store sign hanging from the dragons claws. This building is one of many architectural wonders in the beautiful city of Barcelona. It just happens to be across the street (Las Ramblas) from the famous La Boqueria market. Just make sure you look upwards at the buidlings as you're walking down this street (and others). You might miss it without realizing it.

Umbrella store owner Bruno Quadros had his business on the ground floor of this 1858 building; he used the umbrella decor outside to advertise his wares. In 1883 the building had its first refurbishment as Barcelona was getting dressed-up for the 1888 Exposition.
The architect incorporated Oriental elements (dragon, fans, etc.) into the exterior motif.
During the late 1880's, Barcelona was in the throws of growth and expansion. In 1980 it was again refurbished and the Modernistic/Egyptian/Chinese elements were not eliminated. Thank the architectual gods!
The building fronts La Rambla and is a very favorite site on the route.

If you are visiting Barcelona, chances are you will stroll along Las Ramblas at some point. If you do, make sure you look for this cool building. It’s around halfway between Plaça Catalunya and the Columbus monument (on the left as you head toward Columbus). The building was built in 1858 for the owner of the umbrella shop which was originally on the ground floor. It was refurbished in the 1883 to include the current somewhat whimsical architectural design. I wouldn’t walk out of my way just see it, but definitely take a look if you’re in the area.

The beautiful Metropolis, Barcelona, has so many wonderful buildings.
Casa Bruno Quadros is on of them.
It i situated on the east side of the Rambla.
The house is originally built in 1858, but the very special facade with umbrellas is made by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas in 1883.
Once was here an umbrella shop, and the locals call the house Casa dels Paraigües (House of Umbrellas)

Cool building to see if you happen to be strolling La Rambla but not super high on the list compared to all the other sights to see throughout the city.
