Top ways to experience El Born
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

- willow731Inverness, United Kingdom262 contributionsgive it a go...We've never explored this area properly before and although it was nice and I can see how people love it, we still prefer the Gothic area but maybe it's because we know it a lot better. In El Born there was some amazing little shops, loads of great quirky cafes and bars but the few that we stopped at, although they were lovely, there always seemed to be a lot of "characters" hanging around outside. I would definitely recommend a browse though and decide for yourself what your favourite area is.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023

Full of typical restaurants and cafes, so a good place to eat and drink. Good for pedestrians. Come and get lost.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024
- Expattraveler100Sarasota, Florida5,934 contributionsNot as artsy as I’d hopedWe expected more art shops and galleries. But it’s a nice walk with tight streets and side streets with lovely balconies and architecture. A few places to eat and basically a relaxing stroll for a couple of hours. Finding a bathroom without sitting to eat a meal is a challenge!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,273 contributionsA bit of Old Barcelona well worth exploringEl Born is sandwiched between La Ribera to the north and Barceloneta to the south with Via Laietana as its border with the Gothic district to the west. Our hotel was on Via Laietana so we explored it most days and nights especially as, although it has a reputation for art galleries, pricey boutiques and shoe shops it is also home to several decent small traditional tapas bars and a couple of the cities burgeoning craft beer bars. It’s a maze of narrow roads and interconnecting alley ways opening up to the occasional squares, such as the one that houses the impressive BasĂlica de Santa Maria del Mar. For me, outside of a couple of quirky art galleries I didn’t really pick up on the expensive shops side, but certainly more the bars and restaurants. For those into craft beer DIECI8 Bar and the fairly recently opened Barna Brew Born are two craft beer bars well worth searching out. And there are several authentic tapas bars which are frequented by the locals and tourists alike. I found it a perfectly safe area to explore both during the day and at night, but like various other areas of Barcelona where tourists congregate pickpockets and scammers work here. So just have your wits about you and your possessions tucked away and you will be fine. The El Born district technically stretches east far enough to include the Parc de la Ciutadella which is a fantastic green space and a pleasant area to stroll when the sun is out for a contrast to the narrow streets of the rest of the El Born district.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 June 2024

I didn’t like this neighborhood that much. But that has a lot to do with getting robbed. I was sitting on a bench and a guy did a snatch, grab, and run on the chain on my neck. I didn’t feel safe after that. The neighborhood is what I’d call trendy. And has a lot of small stores and places to eat.

All sorts of seedy characters are loitering around this area. I left very quickly as I approached by 2 different men in broad daylight who looked like they are on crack and kept asking me for money.
Other reviewers were right to point out that this place is unsafe and I experienced it first hand.

This is a very cool area. It has a very casual vibe, but it feels very crowded. There are lots to see here and the streets a narrow and curvy making it a bit crowded to walk through. We would not live here, but we love to visit. There are lots of cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops among other businesses. This is a must visit when in Barcelona.

Nice old city and historical part of Barcelona. Evenings very crowded. Many bars, small restaurants. For family, friends a good opportunity to know a little of the city. Near to Santa Maria del Mar church. Close to the city park ciutadella and the zoo

Narrow streets and dark alleys ... none straight. Ancient. No crowds of touristas. Really cool ... hidden bars ans cafes and wine shops. Was there that summer 2013 for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Beautiful old quarter with plenty of bars and small shops. Historic site of ancient excavations well presented. Don’t miss tapas bar Sagardi and Santa Maria del Mar. The small streets can seem frightening so would prefer to walk on one if the guided tours. Out guide showed us wonderful Graffiti.

What time do shops close in el born?
Written 1 August 2018
it really does vary shop by shop. the neighbourhood of el born is one which thrives in the evening, so most do stay open late. in fact barcelona and indeed spain as a country is geared towards staying open late. and it's important to remember that there are a myriad of smaller winding pedestrian alleys with beautiful and unique shops - it's not just the main thoroughfares. so be sure to disappear down some of those quieter looking, nondescript "alleyways" behind the Santa Maria del Mar. i'm not much of a shopper, but never in my life have i stopped and marvelled at so many beautiful shops as i did wandering around barcelona, the gothic quarter and el born especially.

Hola, algĂşn hotelito para recomendar en el corazĂłn del barrio Born. Prefiero privilegiar ubicaciĂłn a lujo. Gracias!!!

Gracias

Suggestions for a hotel or apartment in El Born or Eixample. Also, does Ryan Air use the main Barcelona airport? We need easy access to airport but don't want to stay there. Thankd
Written 16 September 2017
Yes Ryan Air uses the main airport of Barcelona, the El Prat airport.
And going into the city itself is very easy with the subway

We stayed at Inside Barcelona Apartments Mercat, which is smack bang in the middle of El Born, overlooking the old market. Perfect location and a really awesome apartment!

Could you recommend some nice restaurants in the El Born district please
Written 12 August 2016
Can't remember now but check out Rick Steves travel book on Barcelona. We did the walks he laid out and they were terrific. He suggested restaurants along the way and the different sites we passed.

Hi there. What would be the best way to get from El born to a swimming beach? We have two small children, so a very long walk isn't ideal.
Written 16 July 2016
It was about a 20 min walk from our hotel but you can also take a taxi which was not very expensive.
Written 8 August 2016
What is the best way to get to El Born from Airport? We are arriving on a Saturday night after nine.
Written 10 July 2016
Taxi :) it's slightly more expensive after 8pm and I think there is a fixed cost for airport transfers but this will be the most convenient method of transportation.
A cheaper option would be to take the Aerobus but it only takes you up to Placa de Catalunya which means you will have to take a metro to El Born. Since its your first day in Barcelona after a tiring flight, I suggest you spend a bit extra and take a taxi :)
