Neighbourhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

Nice to rest and relax
Aug. 2021 • Couples
Nice place to see and walk along the port. Maybe there is not much to see, but it is a good place to sit at a bench by the shore, rest and relax during your tour of Barcelona.

Not worth going out of your way for
Aug. 2021
The port is fine, but it's pretty much just a mall (not a great one) on a pier. If you have nothing else to do, I suppose it's worth a visit. Otherwise, there are other attractions that deserve your attention.

What a transformation!
Nov. 2019
My last visit here was in 1970. To say it is different is an understatement. For the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona wisely decided to renovate the port and they kept the original facades of the classic old buildings and selectively demolished many old textile factories and decaying urban buildings to make way for the renovations along the now beautiful harbor, changing Barcelona into a world class city. Palm trees from Morocco were installed along a newly designed seaside promenade. The transformation was astounding to me and wholly unrecognizable. Cruise ships soon followed adding to the income and notoriety from tourism.

Exploring Port Vell on a Weekend
Jan. 2020
Even if you only have a couple of days in Barcelona, it’s worth stopping by the waterfront. It was completely remodelled after the 1992 Olympics and is now a vibrant, modern area. It’s easy to relax and enjoy the sun and water. If you have several days, I’d recommend taking a few hours to hang out down here, walk further along the waterfront promenade and stop and eat. I think the weekend is the best time to go. It is definitely quieter mid-week but on weekends there is an antiques market and free entry to the Maritime Museum on Sunday afternoon.

We spent a couple of hours in the port area doing the following:
1) LAS RAMBLAS - From the Gothic area, we walked the length of Las Ramblas which brought us to the Colombus statue and the port. This is a great starting point to explore the old port area.
2) COLOMBUS MONUMENT – You don't actually see much of Colombus himself because he’s at the very top of the 60m tall column. He’s looking firmly into the distance and pointing forcefully out to sea with an outstretched arm. You can take a lift to a viewing platform at the top (you end up just below Colombus’ feet) for about €6. Stop by the 8 big, black monumental lions around the base - they make great photos.
3) WEEKEND MARKET - Next we crossed to the waterfront where there was an antiques/flea market. I loved the mix of antique & vintage incl posters, ornaments, silverware, jewellery, coins, maps etc. It was varied and interesting enough that we browsed for some time.
4) RAMBLA DE MAR BRIDGE – From the market, we headed left to the Maremagnum Centre across the water. We followed the new Rambla De Mar walkway to the swinging bridge. If you get the timing right, the bridge splits and swings open like an enormous door or gateway to let yachts glide through. We found this very interesting.
5) MAREMAGNUM LUNCH – there are a number of restaurants in this centre and even on a busy weekend, we got a table without a booking. We chose Tapas Tapas because we could sit outside on the large balcony by the water, looking out at the port , the cable cars and Montjuic in the distance (see separate review)
6) PROMENADE – after lunch, we continued on past Maremagnum along the promenade. It's a lovely walk. The promenade is lined with palm trees and occasional sculptures on one side and a marina with beautiful boats on the other (including the 1918 schooner, St Eulalia which you can go onto, €3). The path is wide and flat - very easy for small children and pushchair friendly.
7) MARITIME MUSEUM – In the late afternoon, we headed back towards Colombus and the Maritime Museum,. The wonderful thing about the museum is that it's located inside the original 13th century ship-building yards. After 3pm on Sundays, it is free to visit. I’d recommend not leaving it too late. It wasn’t crowded when we went in but by the time we left (around 4:40-5), there was a long line. (see separate review)

Yachts and more yachts
Jan. 2020 • Friends
Nice views of boats and massive yachts. Right on the harbor. Boats and more boats.

There was this restaurant called Luz de gas right on the harbor. Had an upper deck for seating too.

So much to take in. Lots and lots of great bottles of red wines, lots of local cuisine and beautiful yachts to aspire for one day.

Food wasn’t bad, the wine was better.
