About
Casa Mila, popularly known as La Pedrera, is a most unusual building, constructed between 1906 and 1912 by the architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) and declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1984. Today it is the headquarters of Fundacio Catalunya La Pedrera and houses a cultural centre that is a reference point in Barcelona for the range of activities it organises and the different spaces for exhibitions and other public uses it contains. A visit to La Pedrera, landmark building and container, gives us a better understanding and appreciation of architecture and transports us to the period when Antoni Gaudi lived.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

The visit is for first time tourists in Barcelona, and to check it off the list to see. It is my least favorite of Antonio Gaudi's genius designs. There's a single line for those with and without tickets and it doesn't split till you get to the end (I suspect there isn't room for two lines). At first it's interesting. Then you go a little higher and it's more interesting, Then you hit the attic, and see its architecture, and the models of Gaudi's other works, ... and then the payoff: the roof. It's like a playground for your eyes and brain. Take a hat and water, it will be hot up there. We love to hear that you enjoyed the experience! - Ray MLoxwood, United Kingdom51 contributionsBlock of flatsThe whole ticket / queue situation for many site in Barcelona is a mess tbh. Poorly organised, expensive, subject to abuse etc etc. Once we got in it wasn’t bad particularly if you’re intrigued by Gaudi or maybe love his work. To be honest it left me a bit cold. The idea that much of his work was inspired by nature is ‘interesting’ ….what has nature done to deserve that! The experience was ok and in the end it was reasonably well laid out but basically it’s a block of flats with a few strange items on the roof! …..I’ll sit back and wait for so stick I’m sure but hey everyone’s different and you’ll probably love it!Thanks for sharing your experience at La Pedrera - Casa Milà. It helps us to constantly improve. We are sorry you were disappointed with the visit, which has been designed so that you can enjoy both the building and learn about the architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Finally, we would also like to inform you that the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation allocates the revenue from the tickets it sells to social, environmental, educational and cultural projects led by the Foundation itself. We work hard so that visitors have a pleasant visit to La Pedrera and we are sorry that the visit was not to your liking. - PavelBudapest, Hungary42 contributionsExpensive but beautifulThe price is really not friendly, but contrary to Casa Batlló (which is about 50 % more already) you can really see everything, including the vault and a tiny museum of the materials. This building is bigger, more interesting (the chimneys) and a newer one (meaning his style was developed into bigger perfection). If you only have the time or budget for 1 house of Gaudi, be sure to pick this one over Casa Batlló.Thanks for sharing, your opinion is very valuable!Written 17 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 November 2023

It was the last private residence he built before devoting his life to Sagrada Familia. The audio system is great. We found this building to be the most disappointing of the Barcelona sights that we visited. I didn’t find anything attractive about the outside of the building. Essentially we paid our money, got the audio guide, took a lift up to the roof, which was pretty small and very crowded, to look at various weird sculptures and chimneys and then came down and had a look round a pretty uninteresting apartment. All over and out in less than an hour.

We regret that the visit to Casa Milà has not lived up your expectations. We want to inform you that La Pedrera is the only exhibition space in Barcelona devoted to all Gaudí’s work. In total you can visit 4,500 m2 divided between five floors of the building, including the Warrior Rooftop, the Whale Attic, The Tenants’ Apartment, the Flower and the Butterfly Courtyards and the Milà Family’s Apartment (former residence of the Milà family and now a temporary Exhibition Hall).
About the crowds, we want to inform you that we are prepared with all the necessary security measures to ensure that you can enjoy the visit with maximum safety. We have reduced the capacity of the building to avoid crowds and ensure a safe distance between people, and with the installation of plastic screens in places where necessary. You can check all the security measures in the official website of La Pedrera.
Sincerely,

We booked the 8am tour of Le Pedrera with the extremely informative and entertaining Arcadi guiding us around this magnificent building.
The tour only had 7 of us and as the building was not open to the public yet, some great opportunities for photos. The tour includes access to the rooftop, the attic and the townhouse. Arcadi has a passion for the building and passed on all the important aspects of the history and its creation, absolutely fascinating. We finished off with a coffee in the cafe that was included in the tour. We would highly recommend this tour.

La Pedrera- Casa Milà offers differents types of visit. One of them is La Pedrera Exclusive, a guided tour in different languages which includes: the Warrior Rooftop, the Whale Attic with the Gaudí Exhibition, the Tenants’ Apartment, the Flower Courtyard and the Butterfly Courtyard as well as some areas that cannot be visited on the normal tour. After the visit, you can have a coffee at La Pedrera Café.
Do you want to visit Casa Mila before anyone else? Would you like to walk on the Warrior Rooftop at La Pedrera all on your own? Now you can do it, with the "La Pedrera Exclusive" guided tour.
thanks for your comment!

Thanks Gaudi for the amazing building. I took the breakfast tour for euro 39 at 8am which come with a guide and A cup of coffee or fruit juice after the tour. The apartment tour were worth it with explanations on certains details on the doors and windows
I was at awe the moment we stepped into the building, like any other buildings by the great master architect Gaudi.
The attic itself is amazing with lots of exhibits where you can spend some time on.
#I visited in 2018. Not sure if the breakfast tour is still available.

Really quite disappointed with our visit to la pedrera, we followed the audio guide and were in and out inside an hour. Between tour groups and school groups it was too busy, I felt like I was in someone's way wherever I was. The rooftop view is nice but not great. The audio guide was interesting in parts but I found the constant music annoying and was never sure when I could stop and chat to my husband without missing parts.
We had visited Palau guell the day before and enjoyed our visit there much more.

Thank you for your opinion about La Pedrera, it allows us to evaluate and improve the quality of the service that we offer.
In addition, we regret your disappointment with the visit of Casa Milà, you can avoid crowds coming early at morning, at the opening, which is the time with less affluence of visitors.
Moreover, the new audio guide system is designed to facilitate the visitor's route. It has sensors that automatically recognize where the visitor is and what he sees each moment. The new immersive system completes the sensory conception of the visit at Casa Mila. We work hard so that visitors spend a nice time while visiting La Pedrera and we regret that the visit was not what you were expecting for and we hope to see you again in La Pedrera.

My wife booked the night experience tour which included the meal at the cafe on the first floor. The meal was a four course meal which was inclusive of drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal in the Cafe, which in itself was stunning. Then we headed down stairs to start our tour. I apologise , but i can't remember our guides name, but she was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the Casa Mila. Travelling through the building we learnt about the history and architectural design of the property and then finally into the Loft and Roof for the light show, which were stunning. After we had made our way back downstairs we were treated to a glass of Cava, or soft drinks withe a huge bowl of freshly made cookies to enjoy. A superb tour and great value, thank you.

We chose the night tour based on other reviews. While this was fascinating and wonderful to see, I believe we may have gotten a new tour guide. She was kind and had the information, but was unable to answer many questions and for some reason, we were rushed so quickly through the areas. Places where one should have been given ample time to roam and read each exhibit, or watch the videos attached, and to take pictures. Worth it but feel we missed entire sections based on being told to keep walking and moving along. Highly recommend the night version as the rooftop show was superb, but again, we were rushed right off the roof with no time to enjoy the spectacular views. The tour said it was 90 minutes and we still had 10-15 mins left at the end, that would have been better spent on other floors and meandering in the areas that were obviously meant to be meandered. Can’t fault someone for being new, she will learn, but would definitely have appreciated the full amount of time.

Less of a wow than Casa Battló. The guide seemed intent on describing all of Antoni Gaudi's works so if you are not planning on also going to Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia, or Casa Battló this might be a decent option. However, those are worth it independently so I wouldn't recommend.
The regular tour consists of walking up 8 flights of stuffy stairs and then the majority of the sights include time on the very exposed (read: extremely sunny and hot) rooftop terrace (where the cool chimneys, views and sculptures and trencadis are). Beware, it is very hot -- would recommend early morning or evening and there was crawling with tourists

Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion about Casa Milà. We are really glad that you find it worth to visit. This building, considered as a “petrified wave” or a “giant sculpture” is interesting for those who are into architecture, art, Modernisme or Gaudí, as well as for those who are not. As you say, the Whale Attic with the Gaudí exhibition offers a broad view of his work, showing the most basic traits of his clearly visual and empirical way of understanding architecture through models, audiovisuals and objects. The route around the space is divided into seven areas, one of which is devoted entirely to La Pedrera.
Sincerely,

The first full day in Barcelona, we opted to take our own walking tour and ended up at Casa Mila. We sprung for the immediate entrance tickets rather than the cheaper timed tickets since we didn't want to have to come back. They have you start on the roof and work your way down. I mean, for the first time I experienced Gaudi's genius. I always thought his vision was too funky but when you experience the architecture up close it's mind blowing. I usually have a fear of heights yet walking along the rooftop, I experienced none of that. It did get a bit hot once inside, walking around the attic and got crowded at certain exhibits so take water with you. In general this is a must see.

Unfortunately it was a wet, very windy day and the terrace was closed. But that was okay for we still enjoyed our visit. Gaudi was brilliant and we have seen some other of his designs on this trip. I was amazed how he took natural shapes and incorporated them into his work. The layout of the attic was impressive and the displays on how the building was built was also remarkable. We also enjoyed viewing the apartments and seeing some of the furniture of the day and how the residents would have lived. The audio guide was a great help too. Really enjoyed it and we spent well over 2 hours there.

We only viewed this from the street as we did with Casa Battlo as the entry fees are quite a lot and sometimes you just have to prioritize what you are going to spend your money on. We did a tour of Sagrada Familia and we also paid to get into the Gaudi park as well so we just felt these were too expensive on top. Maybe if we go back to Barcelona we would do these next time.

About the stairs, nowadays La Pedrera has 2 lifts that allow visitors to reach the roof top during the visit. Even if we recommend to use the service stairs because every single corner of the house is worth to be seen, visitors are also welcome to use the lift if they prefer it.
