About
The Museu Picasso in Barcelona is a key reference for understanding the formative years of Pablo Picasso. The genius of the young artist is revealed through the 4,251 works that make up the permanent collection. Furthermore, the Museu Picasso, opened in 1963, also reveals his deep relationship with Barcelona: an intimate, solid relationship that was shaped in his adolescence and youth, and continued until his death. The Museum is very rich in regard to work from the formative years in the life of the artist; it is practically exhaustive up to the Blue Period. The Museum also houses an important representation of works from 1917, and the series Las Meninas (1957) as well as a comprehensive print collection.

Neighbourhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

- Dick LBeaconsfield, United Kingdom48 contributionsGo if you rate PicassoGo if you rate Picasso. It will not give you an overview of his life and work as it largely consists of some interesting early work and some from the 1950's and later so is curiously disjointed. There is a very interesting section of his obsession with Velazquez's La Meninas which would have been much enhanced if there had been a large photo of the original. The building is worth a visit and the area around the museum is well worth exploring with lots of interesting artisanal shops I would suggest going along and seeing when the timed tickets are available (usually a few hours later) which gives you time to visit other local sights or wander around the local narrow streetsVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 October 2023
- Susanne EBouches-du-Rhone, France40 contributionsNice enough but too crowded!I made a reservation to come at a time when the museum wasńt supposed to be busy, I am not sure what busy means. In an old absolutely stunning building there were crowds everywhere. The show in itself was nice enough but unfortunately not my favorite. I would still recommend going but to expect crowds.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 October 2023
- 645lisaSan Diego, California34 contributionsA vast disappointment for a Picasso fanThis was the greatest disappointment of our trip. I had read that there were more than 4,000 permanent exhibits in 5 separate palaces, but I would guess that there were no more than 300 full-sized paintings in one building. Don't pass by the first room that is wallpapered with hundreds of thumbnail sketches or you will have missed half the tour. Most of the works were from his early years and were donated by Picasso himself so I would imagine that these were the ones that didn't sell. There were signs describing his most productive years then the next room jumped 3 decades of his career. We were going at a decent pace because we were expecting to see far more works of art, but we were finished in a little more than 1/2 an hour. When we asked if there was more to be seen, no one spoke much English and we were directed to the exit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- Michael FPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania1,156 contributionsMore than just a greatest hits...The Picasso Museum was not at all what I expected, in a good way! I get to see a lot of Picasso's work living in Philadelphia as quite a few of his pieces are on display at the Barnes and the Philadelphia museum of art. However, honestly those collections are quite focused and do not tell me much about the man himself. I loved how the Picasso Museum walked you through his life and influences. You'll see more than just his most googled works. You'll see how things started, sketches from art school, and even his pottery! While I cannot remember the exact amount, admission was fairly priced. I'd plan to spend at least a hour, maybe an hour and a half, in the museum. They have a few videos around the museum mixed in with all the art to provide context and background. Enjoy!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 October 2023
- Patrik LUppsala County, Sweden290 contributionsWell worth a visitThe regular ticket price seems to be €14, but I went on a free Wednesday so I didn't have to pay anything to visit the museum. With that said it was definitely worth spending an hour there. To get a free ticket you need to to book in advance, but that is really easily done on the web page. On the web page it says that free times are Thursdays from 1700 to 1900 HRS, but when I booked all of Wednesday was free... You also get to se some Moró originals as well as Picasso.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 October 2023
- Gary TAustin, Texas1,061 contributionsDecent experienceThis is a nice museum that is easy to experience. We bought our tickets for a later time of the day and it wasn't over crowded. They control admission to allow everyone a chance to actually spend time looking at the art and reading the descriptions and captions. Plan on an hour and a half or two hours.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- RjessMMMVancouver, Washington592 contributionsWonderful museumWe enjoyed our visit to the Picasso Museum and our expectations were definitely met. We did buy our tickets ahead of time though not sure that was necessary especially during the month of November. It was not particularly crowded. We did have to get the audio guide at a different location than the entrance and you do have a couple of options. They can provide you a guide or you can download it on your phone which is what we did, and they give you a password. There is a small gift shop at the end of the museum as well. Would definitely return the next time we are in Barcelona. Enjoy.Visited November 2023Written 26 November 2023
- Traveller39 contributionsGreat museumThis is a comprehensive and worthy museum full of Picasso's artwork. We also got to view Miro's works. It was quite crowded, so be prepared to wait to see some popular works. Overall, it was worth the time and money.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2023
- traveldad2018New York City, New York237 contributionsGood family experience in nice settingWe went with 3 adult children and the entire family enjoyed the museum. It was not overly crowded in January, and there was also a temporary exhibit focusing on the friendship (and paintings) of Miro. The museum is housed in an appropriately rustic space in Barcelona. We’re not Picasso experts but it was good to see his development, beginning with his very early paintings.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024

Our tickets were easily purchased in person at the desk and our college student daughter got 50% off for showing her student ID. Adult admission was 15 Euros. First of all the buildings that housed the museum had their own charm and character that was a good setting. Rooms were laid out chronologically to show track how Picasso skills evolved from childhood through his adult life. There were a lot of helpful signs in each room that summarized the period in his life as well as next to featured artwork. The special exhibit this month featured a fellow local artist, Joan Miro, which was also nicely organized that we may see his museum if there’s time. We spent over an hour here before jet lag took over and we headed back to our hotel.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024

This is a nice museum. It has a lot of bredth to it that you don't see in museums that only have a few of the more major works by Picasso. His earlier works are really cool to see, and might convert you if you aren't into cubism. It only takes an hour or two, too, which is great if you are on a tight schedule or just looking for something leisurely to do on a Saturday. Make sure to look up Velazquez's Las Meninas and some of the commentary about it ahead of time if you aren't already familiar. It will make the last room way more fun for you.

Museum is located on edge of Gothic area in Barcelona, in a lovely renovated older building. It contains everal very early paintings from when he attended art school in teens in Barcelona. We took a Picasso walking tour thru the Gothic area, with the guide discussing the influence that Barcelona had on Picasso's early pictures. Very informative. Then he took us as a group into the museum, explaining signifcance of verious painting. I encourage you to take walking tour with ending in the museum. Wonderful way to experience the museum.

We’ve been to the Picasso Museum in Paris before and we enjoyed this one just as much if not more. You should buy tickets in advance which means you need to pick the day and time of your visit. It made for a comfortable visit with not too many people. The building housing the art work is old with lots of character and adds to the art displays.

What luck! We came into Barcelona on a national holiday when all the museums and churches were offering free admission. We couldn't just walk in but had to obtain timed tickets for later in the day, but what a treat and worth the wait. By the end of the day, we didn't have to put up with crowds and could drink in the art works at our own pace. A great way to start our stay in Barcelona.

We were able to go in without tickets thanks to the Articket. The museum was not overly-crowded and we enjoyed the collections - especially from the blue period. The organization of the museum was well done, and found much of the work inspiring.

I had not been able to get tickets to the Picasso Museum ahead of time because, according to all ticket sellers, they were sold out. Since we lived a few blocks from the museum, I figured if we waited until they opened, we might get lucky, if we didn’t get it, we would have a lovely walk in our neighborhood. We hit the jackpot! Not only could we buy tickets, we could grab some breakfast and then return, and still get in. They promised.
The museum was good on its promise, we did get in. The Museu Picasso, a gallery devoted to Picasso's formative years, is packed on two levels with impressive early works by this artist. And as many surprises in these narrow streets, we found that what appears from the outside does not reflect the spaciousness inside. With 4,250 works of art, this museum claims to hold the most comprehensive collection of Picasso’s early years.
As we moved through his artistic development it was interesting to see some of his classical works done in Corunna, Malaga, Barcelona and Madrid. As he moved on to avant-garde trends we could see his influence from the French aesthetics as a development of the artist he was to become. Drawings from his Blue Period, and oil paintings produced in Barcelona in 1917 were among the largest of his works created here. There is a very special collection of 57 works of Picasso’s personal interpretation of Velazquez’s Las Meninas, the only series on display together in one museum. In addition there is a collection of ceramics, etchings, lithographs and linocuts donated by his widow Jacqueline.

This museum is fantastic. It outlines Picasso’s life and strangely allows you to photograph the artwork! But that’s the allure of Picasso, the strange and alluring!
It takes a bit to find the museum but the location is fantastic. Everyone knows what a Picasso painting looks like but what is far more interesting is his early work from when he was 15.
His early work is in a classic portrait style where Picasso is learning his craft. Even at an early age he was extremely talented. Interestingly there is no indication at all of the artistic genius that Picasso was to become.
It does take a bit to get your head around the sudden, left field turn in his art.
A word of caution. The museum doesn’t contain his most famous piece ‘Guernica’. That is in Madrid. However that doesn’t take away the excellence of this museum.
We didn’t take the audio guide. We just enjoyed the craziness of the art.

Even if Picasso is not your cup of tea, this place is amazing. We were surprised to see his earliest works and then to see his development throughout his life that brought him to the style we recognize as his alone.
We did the tour using the audio guide. It is a bit confusing as the numbers are not in order. Museum employees directed us from gallery to gallery but it was not always chronological. This was a minor issue compared with the richness of what was on display.
Highly recommend a visit using the audio guide or on the rare occasions when a human guide is available.

Rather disappointing visit today with my 19 year old daughter.
I previously visited about 20 years ago with my wife and remember learning about Picasso’s progression as an artist and how he developed his cubist works through multiple iterations. We got none of that today. I got the impression that the curator had abandoned any concept of chronology and instead focussed on a few of his lesser-known works. Odd considering that Picasso dated all his works in order to document them.
There were a lot of paintings up to the turn of the century, then we were directed by staff to an exhibition about his work in 1917, then the final couple of rooms had multiple versions of two of his final works from 1957. Hardly any cubist works on display - sure I saw some studies of Guernica before.
The PDF map and instructions sent with the tickets the same morning of the visit were out of date - it said that lockers were not in use (they were) and that you needed to take your phone and headphones for the audio guide (you get a dedicated device).
