Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Raoul was a terrific guide who brought the battle to life at what is possibly the last intact battlefield of the Napoleonic wars. He has a passion for the subject and his presentation was both highly entertaining and historically accurate. We had never been on a battlefield tour before but will now look for more after this very positive experience.

Nice little battlefield about 10 miles south of Salamanca. Worthwhile drive out if you have a hire car and are interested in Peninsular war history. 600m drive along an upmade single track takes you to a single parking space but it is incredibly difficult to turn around. 10minute walk up steep hill to the tow to enjoy the amazing views of the battlefield, the other hill and Salamanca in the far distance. There is a small monument but not a lot of description or information. (But if you made it this far you probably won’t really need the info)

A must-see for anybody interested in the Peninsular War (in Spain, the War of Independence) or in military history generally. This is where the Battle of Salamanca (for Spanish people, the Battle of Arapiles) was fought, one of Wellington's most masterly victories, and crucial to the eventual liberation of Spain from Napoleon. The site has not been built over, and with the help of panels (in Spanish and English) placed at strategic points, it's possible to follow exactly what happened. If you're energetic and fit you can climb up to the top of the Greater Arapile and see the monument, etc, but it's not necessary. In the village there's an Aula de Interpretación de la Batalla (or centre for explaining the battle), which is open on Thursdays and Saturdays, but if it's not open there's still plenty to see and think about. About eight kms south of Salamanca, easy to find, along a good road.

There has clearly been an effort to improve the information (for the 200th anniversary perhaps) and the 10 boards dotted around give a good overview. You can drive between almost all of them (you have to climb the Greater Arapile though but the view is definitely worth it) so don't trudge around on foot unless you have a whole day to spare. The little museum in Arapiles village is supposedly good but only open 10-2.30 Sat and Thurs so we didn't see it

We were amazed at how the battlefield area South of Salamanca appeared to be more or less as it must have been 200 years ago - few new roads / buildings etc...
There are some very informative noticeboards around the battlefield showing what happened when - unusual for the Spanish to have any info in English ! Battlefield diagrams - pictures of the action etc - brilliant !
The whole area is quite bleak - and in January quite windswept. Very easy to get here by car from Salamanca (Why Cant trip advisor get their maps right ?). Bit of a hike up the small hill to the memorial but certainly worth it.
If you have a facsination for History you will adore this place - wonderfully well done ! Loved the place - atmospheric, informative and a chance to pay ones respects.

Strongly agree with all others have said. Arrived at museum at 12 noon on Thursday but closed. Found cleaning lady next door who mimed that key person had gone for food so we walked to nearest info boards in village and lady turned up about 12.30. Museum was great. €2 pp but €1 if larger group. Also there is picnic site at info board for Chico Arapile. Advise walkers to use the signposted path to Grande Arapile which wa also driveable today - at least to last scramble. Other routes cross private land. Really worthwhile day and weather was amazing.

You would nearly miss the signs (look for Arapil Grande) and the pathway leading you there is not making friends with your car tires.
Once climbed up, you have a wide view all the way up to the center of Salamanca.
One tiny sign gives you a bit of background, but this one is clearly not yet on the subsidised EU or Unesco list.
Access is free, but don't count on any facilities.

How can a place like this be hidden when it's the highest point for miles? Besides that it is the sight of one of the most famous defeats of Napoleon's army. While we were there we had the place to ourselves. We biked from Salamanca and you can walk / ride to the top. Great views, great place for a picnic. Historical markers on site.

This is the second time I’ve visited the battlefield at Arapiles and I still haven’t worked out which way you’re actually supposed to approach the monument on the top of the hill. But it doesn’t matter - the scramble up the slope serves as a reminder of how brutal and awful the battle must have been. A visit to the small museum in the village (open Thurs and Sat) gives you an excellent understanding of the battlefield when you do make the climb.
Considering its historical importance, it is not regularly visited, probably because the site itself is not particularly easy to find. But it is well worth the effort if you have an interest in military history.
