An organic combination of new and old.
Jun. 2019
Like many squares in Spain, this one is called the Main square (Plaza Mayor) also. And the main thing in the middle ages in the city was the market. Like everywhere this square in Burgos in the form of an irregular polygon was first a commercial area. Then the merchants entered the square and traded directly from their carts. In 1791, the final introduction of the Plaza Mayor as the administrative center of the city of Burgos took place. The wagon shops and the adjacent wall were demolished. New buildings with arches were erected. Some of them are still standing successfully combined with new buildings built later. There is no dissonance between the old and the new. Even the town Hall built in 1230 doesn`t stand out in size as it usually does. The statue of Spanish king Carlos III is located in front of the Town hall. Carlos justifies his number by the fact that the Spanish throne is the third one for him. He was Charles I in Parma, Charles VII in Naples and Sicily, and finally Charles III in Spain. Unlike his predecessors, the Spanish Bourbons, this king was filled with sensible politics. Plaza Mayor demonstrates one of his achievements - it is beautifully paved with tiles, which is associated with his name. In addition to walking, you can make shopping in several. And, of course, you can drink coffee or a glass of cold vino blanco in the cafe.

Nice at Christmas
Dec. 2019
Not as dramatic as some main squares, in my opinion, and somewhat obscured by Christmas “things.” But, everything about this city is charming. It’s as if the whole city was designed for tourists hundreds of years later.

Beautiful Plaza
Sep. 2019 • Couples
Loved it! Picturesque houses, plenty of cafes and artisan shops, some high end boutiques, the locals walking and enjoying leisurely meals outside the cozy cafes... Just beautiful.

Quite Stunning

Everything about Burgos takes your breath away and this includes the Plaza Major. It is near the cathedral and adds to the magnificence of the city.

Plaza Mayor, Burgos, beautiful and original.
Apr. 2019 • Friends
Burgos Plaza Mayor is surrounded by beautiful and amazing buildings. It is the main square of the many squares that this beautiful and vibrant city has. This square is charming, original and beautifully decorated. It is not fake like other major squares in Northern and Central Europe that has been rebuilt so many times and do not reflect the original time history.

Not as grand as some
Jun. 2019 • Couples
The main Plaza Mayor is a little less grand than the usual squares you get in spain with a real mix of architecture. Still interesting and there is a small narrow street leading from it called locally walking street. That is amazing for tapas and a drink

Great for people watching
May 2019 • Couples
As it is name suggests, this is the main Plaza in town and he is absolutely beautiful. It is kept very clean indeed and there are lots of benches just to sit and watch the world go by. There is always something happening and lots of exhibitions, parades and so on.

The nightlife there is very good as well. It has some of the towns best bars and restaurants and the atmosphere crackles until late in the evening. No visit to Burgos will be complete without seeing plaza mayor.

Lots going on here.
Apr. 2019 • Couples
The city main square is a hive of activity, from children playing, demonstrations taking place, bands playing, young girls just getting up and dancing to a guitar, lots happening. Plus there are plenty of restaurants surrounding the square, some shops also, but they are more likely to be found just off the square.
Lovely place to have a coffee and just people watch.
BUT beware of the pigeons, they will grab your food off the table in front of you!

Large square
Oct. 2018 • Friends
The Plaza Mayor is large and did not feel very inviting. We visited early in the morning and there really wasn't much going on at that time of day. We only spent a very short time looking at the colorful buildings and the Town Hall. Perhaps the atmosphere is better in the evening when there are more people and "life" in the square.

Under renovation
Sep. 2018 • Solo
Walked by in daytime. The square is undergoing renovation, which takes away a large part of the charm. Didn't go back in the night.
