Tourist attraction that welcomes visitors from the bus station.

The progress of artillery made it impossible to defend cities with medieval walls. Then the walls began to be demolished in European cities in the XVIII-XIX centuries. This was expensive urban land not far from the center. The walls of Burgos didn`t escape the General fate, but the gate of Santa Maria of the XIV-XV century remained unbroken. The reason was the functionality of the gate. Hall the Mudejar inside was used for meetings of the city Council. However, the most interesting is the facade facing the bridge. It was rebuilt by the german architects Juan de Vallejo and Francisco de Cologne in 1536-1553. The gates have a complex composition. The facade is decorated with 6 statues of the sculptor Ochoa de Arteaga. The most famous are the Emperor Charles V, the famous Cid (right), the founder of Burgos Diego Rodriguez Porselos (leaning on a halberd). Three characters will not say anything to foreign tourists: the judges of Castile, Nuno Britra and Lain the Bald and Fernand Gonzales, the first independent count of Castile. In addition to the external inspection, you can see the gate inside.

See It At Night
Dec. 2019
One of the entrances to the old city, and certainly an entrance to take. Very impressive during the day, but even more impressive at night. I thought I had a picture of it at night, but I guess I don’t ...

Very impressive ancient gate. There was an opera singer inside singing for tips -- great accoustics.

Medieval gates to the city of Burgos
Sep. 2019 • Couples
Arco de Santa María is one of the notable landmarks of Burgos. The gates had been built in the Middle Ages and later reconstructed by the Emperor Charles V. The gates are richly adorned with the sculptures of notable citizens of Burgos and face the Cathedral on one side and the river on another. Very picturesque spot.

one of the best ways to enter the old town...
Oct. 2019
We were staying in a hotel nearby, but I decided that the best way was to walk along the Paseo del Espolon and enter the old town via the Impressive gate of Santa Maria, with all the details on it, worth passing through it and entering the square and seeing the Cathedral

Lovely entrance to the old city

This pretty gate serves as an ornate entrance to the old medieval city. It's a short walk from the gate to the cathedral.

Grand gate to the city
Oct. 2019 • Couples
A stunning gate to enter the Plaza del Rey Fernanda from the river and Paseo del Espoloa. Not quite such a big deal from the Plaza side, so do walk through and take a look - you will be impressed.

The main gate!!
Aug. 2019 • Family
This is spectacular! It was built in the 14th century in Renaissance style to honour Emperor Carlos V.
It kind of looks like a castle with two towers and an arch! It's really beautiful to see and BIG! A must if you are in Burgos!
