Magnificent ancient mosque/church, lovely garden, exceptional setting
This is typically Toledo--an ancient mosque, converted to a Christian church, impressively restored, surrounded by lovely city views. There is a pleasant garden, which has views of the old city walls including three of the gates. The exterior of the church with it's Islamic arches is beautiful, as is the interior, which in a small space has Christian and Muslim influences. Each of the roof vaults are unique, one appears to be a Star of David. There are remnants of frescos. Entrance is 4 euros, the better deal is to buy the tourist wristband for 12 euros, which allows you to visit 7 ecclesiastical attractions.

    Special place to visit
My wife and I really enjoyed the brief visit this special place. Quite inexpensive and was not very crowded when we got there in the afternoon. By the time we started heading out, the tour groups on a Saturday had lined up on the street making getting out a bit of a challenge. You can pay an extra euro for an audio guide. There was a single small fountain to look at but the views were amazing and relaxing. There is a small shop there though other places that we visited such as the El Transito Synagogue had many of the same items and they we cheaper. Still an interesting quick visit in the wonderful city of Toledo. Enjoy.

Interesting mosque/church with great views of Toledo from its garden
My wife and I took a day trip to Toledo during a visit to Madrid this past spring. This mosque was supposedly built in 999 and later converted to a Catholic church. This is much the same story as in Cordoba. The entree fee is €4 but it is also included on the tourist wristband for €12 for 7 ecclesiastical attractions. The interior has the Islamic architectural influence with Christian features added later. It also contains a lovely garden with commanding views of Toledo as well as part of the walls and gates of the old town. This building was one of the most interesting ones we visited during our trip to Toledo.

    Simple but Beautiful
Worth a look as part of the tourist bracelet. This church built on a former mosque is so beautiful. There is a small garden and a terrace with views… and a gift shop where a lady was yelling and waving her arms at tourists who don’t speak much if any Spanish as you tried to enter. The only person I found in Toledo who clearly did not like their job!

    Don’t miss this!
Surprisingly, this is my favorite church in Spain, a Romanesque delight taking full advantage of the simple glories of the little mosque that preceded it. Humility is built into the design of mosques, and the Romanesque, with its geometric and simple ornamentation is a suitable match for the space. The damaged condition of the murals adds to the allure.., the early church, in its modesty and fear, was refreshing human, beatific even. The highlight of a visit to Toledo.

A bit out of the way, but worth the detour for history buffs
First thing first: it is NOT a museum, so It would get one star from me because there is nothing to see inside. But it gets one more star for a historical value because it is the oldest mosque/church building in Toledo, if I understand correctly, and one more star for the view from the terrace behind the "garden" - you can take nice photos. A nice bonus is that right in front of the entrance they have recently uncovered the real ancient Roman road (yes, those big cobble stones along the street). So I think 3 stars would be fair, though it is definitely not a major point of interest in Toledo.

Many have commented that this monument can be seen in 10 minutes. Well, in my case I spent probably one full hour inside. True, it is a small place. Yet, the pleasure is in the detail, most of all the rare combination of 9 vaults each of which unique in design, pure caliphal art inspired by the great mosque of cordoba. The central vault, more elevated, acts as a cupola and a lantern from which a blue light enters and inundates all the other vaults creating a hypnotic sensation of unity. Unique and United at the same time…I spent another 30 minutes visiting the Islamic garden and taking a well deserved nap after spending hours walking Toledo winding streets up and down. These 90 minutes have probably been one of my most spiritual and beautiful experiences in 2022 so far.

Not worth the 5 Euros paid. Within the exuberance of all monuments in Toledo, this is a waste of time. You get to see a tiny one room mosque, although ancient and valuable with some frescos still visible and the "cristo de luz" in the center. The outside of the building is quite interesting and the view from the tiny garden overlooks towards the "Hospital de Tavera"

Dear readers, when visiting Madrid you must take a day trip to Toledo…it’s honestly a fairy tale…I felt I was transported to a medieval time, and knights were going to start walking around the tiny streets. It was absolutely breathtaking…set on a hill, surrounded by the original walls, built as a fortress….with the river below. Then you happen to stumble upon this beautiful mosque, one of the oldest after Cordoba…we honestly had no clue it was there. I hadn’t done too much research before we went, I just knew from pictures I had googled that Toledo is a gem. So, this was a real treat…we went in, rented the guided tour, and are so glad we did. It gives you the history from the beginning to end when it became a church…just like Cordoba mosque, it has both Christian and Muslim history. It has a exceptional view as well…with a lovely garden that has a gentle water fountain that relaxes you, I just wanted to sit there and enjoy the breeze….a must visit when visiting Toledo…

In a city full of sights and monuments, this was probably my favorite. It is small but beautiful and is certainly worth a visit. The surrounding garden was lovely and provided a nice view of one of the city gates and the city outside of the wall. The interior and exterior of the mosque are full of amazing details.

The Mosque of Christ of the Light is a history mosque cum church that dates from 10th century and converted to a church after the reconquest. The church is deceptively small. From the outside, it looks very impressive from the outside with in Neo-Mudejar design. The intricate carvings are similar to the Alhambra, which the arches resemble the horseshoe arches from the mosque cathedral of Cordoba.

The interior is actually quite small though. Much of what would've been the Islamic pray is little more than a square of maybe 3 metres on each side and even much of the free space is taken up by supporting columns. The apse was added upon it's conversion to a church and still contains frescoes of varying stages of conservation. There;s enough to imagine that the frescoes would've been very impressive, hopefully if ever fully restored.

Legend has it that when King Alfonso IV entered the city in trimph, his horse kneeled down before the mosque and refused to move. The a shaft of light guided the king to a figurine of the crucified Christ that had been hidden for centuries while under Moorish rule. He left his shield there with the inscription, "This is the shield which the King Alfonso VI left in this chapel when he conquered Toledo, and the first mass was held here".

The church is significant for it's historical value and the balcony has fantastic views of the city below, It won't be a long visit though. Even with an audio guide, the visit would last no more than 20 minutes.

This little mosque is, despite its diminutive size, one of the must see attractions of Toledo. I find it absolutely astonishing to read some of the negative reviews on this site. What on earth do people expect to find when visiting a mosque over 1,000 years old? Please try to understand that not every mosque should look like the Mezquita of Cordoba. How anybody can complain about spending 2.50 euros to see a 1,000 year old European mosque is mind boggling. You pay that for a cafe con leche!!!

Okay. It's old. As another reviewer has put it - "feel it." I think the authorities have done a very good restoration job here. Those that enjoy discovering Spain's Islamic remains will find much to give pleasure here. We have pillars and horseshoe arches as well as other interesting details. Most importantly, we have an inner contemplative space. This is the sole remaining mosque of the ten that Toledo once housed. A place where the ordinary citizen of Toledo went to pray.

I think Toledo, more than any other place, feels like the epicenter of the Christian reconquest. Everything north of the city has a northern character and the south is another country. It's a place soaked in the atmosphere of the three faiths. That is why this small, but beautiful, mosque should command our eternal respect and gratitude.
