Tuesday 14th December we were sightseeing and exploring in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and we paid a visit to this famous market.

It was on our list of places to visit in the City, however, our visit took place earlier than planned.

Parking in the City is a bit of a nightmare, we ended up in an underground car park. On leaving the car park we took the stairs which led us into the centre of this Market, a bit of a surprise.

The charges in the car park were not that expensive, can't remember exact amount, we were there for four hours.

We were expecting to see a market place filled with stalls selling local foods and products. Instead it was a collection of small lock up shops selling local products. It was very well organised, a smooth operation, not the chaos and bedlam we were expecting.

As well as the shops there were a number of cafes to visit.

The exterior of the building is rather impressive and raises expectations for the interior, sadly not fulfilled.

We did like the two statues at the front entrance to the Market, the Lechera Canaria and Homenaje Al Chicharrero (People of Santa Cruz).

I love a proper food market and this one is a good one with lots of exotic fruits and veg, herbs and spices and a big bakery counter. Watch artists and makers around the edge of the market building make leather wares and miniature paintings.

Santa Cruz however is pretty dull unless you want to go shopping in big malls that you’d find anywhere. In my opinion the market alone is not enough of a draw if you’re looking for some culture here.

Visited a few years ago when a lot of stalls were closed but this time the market was in full swing. A wide variety of stalls selling local produce fish meat and bread. Lots to see and enjoy. The building itself on two levels with side courtyards is worth a visit in its own right. Eat fresh seafood with wine.

Rainy Saturday and it was crowded. This is a permanent farmers market. Upstairs has lotsa meat and chicken stalls along with Flowers, fruit and cheese for locals.
The cheap jewelry tables on main floor seemed mostly for tourists and younger locals.
Salted fish stalls are downstairs along with more baked goods and meats.

Authentic market popular with both locals and tourists too. It’s quite a large market with stalls specialising in products like beer or goat cheese. Plenty of canarian products available here too. The market also has numerous tapas bars serving food along with drinks.

We went on a day trip to Santa Cruz and came across this fantastic market, but we especially loved the downstairs fish market. What an abundance of fresh fish and seafood and most of the stalls had small eating areas where everything was cooked to order. We ordered several small dishes and it was definitely the best seafood we have EVER had and it was all enjoyed with a couple of glasses of lovely chilled wine. There was a great atmosphere and I would eat there every day if I could.

A commercial market for the locals, it’s packed with raw food and general good stalls. There are several Lebanese food stalls too, selling sweet meats and bread. It’s very busy but provides a great insight into local shopping.

Arrived there 11:00 Monday morning. Nice looking building.
Where were all the exotic spices? Two shops on upper level selling herbs.
Where were the fish stalls with species from the area? Wandered round both levels found some, all closed.
There were a few butchers, the odd cheese shop, some bakers, one fruit and veg shop and a stall selling plants and flowers. Two spots with food to eat there and some stalls with jewellery.
All told it was a big yawn.
If this is where the locals come to buy their food I can only assume the get it from the Dino supermarket in the basement.
Not worth the time and effort.

From the reviews we expected a little more. On two levels with an escalator and lift available, there were a variety of shops as you would see in any market along with some temporary open stalls with tables. There were several butchers shops showing their wares, some fruit shops. A few stalls selling trinkets, a couple of cheese shops. The shops were in a tiled area easy to walk round. We initially went in Monday but half the shops were shut. So we went on Tuesday when most were open . Twenty minutes would be quite enough to view both levels

This was our third visit to this excellent market.

If you live on the Island or are on a self catering holiday come here for an excellent market experience.

Even if you are not buying it’s a delight to see the very fresh veg , meat , spices , chocolates etc etc .

The fish market is also a superb experience . Eat there if you can .
