Scuba diving, nice restaurant and an abandoned leper colony!
Aug. 2019
Only by chance did we end up here, we were on one of those diving excursions and had about a 45-minute drive from Los Cristianos.
First impressions, normal Tenerife Spanish coastal village. Generally very dry landscape, a nice sweeping beach, not too crowded.
A few eateries dotted around, mostly serving the normal Spanish fayre. Most of the time we were there, there wasn't much going on other than the activity at the diving centre we were visiting.
A couple of us weren't diving, and it was recommended that we went up the hill at the back of the village to see an abandoned leper colony, my god! what a place. I am so surprised that the local tourist organisations don't cash in on that place, or at least use it for movie sets or something. I was told at the time that it was going to be bulldozed down and an apartment resort was going to be built on top of it. I understand about the financial gain, but this is a somewhat historical site and represents a time in Spain's dark past. I was also told by locals when I was there that they didn't like having it there and would be glad to see the back of it.
I understand the financial gain aspect of this whole thing, but it is the human way to be greedy and strive to prosper. I suppose the next thing will be star-spotting apartments at the top of Mount Teide, or maybe mow down Parque de Retiro in Madrid and turn it into a big water park, because the locals don't like the vagrants sleeping in it. Money makes the world go round.
I know if I come back to Tenerife in the future, the chances are the Leper colony won't be there, and it will be another one of those Grandad/Grandchild things where he says to the kid, 'I was here before you were born and it looked nothing like this!' Then we'll go to the water park, then down to the authentic Chicago pizzeria followed by a few pints of Guinness in the Irish pub. I will reminisce about the time I came to Abades all those years ago, and think about what a quaintly, authentic, beautiful, sleepy village I remember it being before. Whilst being made to fill out an American style feedback form about how much I enjoyed my experience at Murphy O'Leprachaun's ranch bar and roadhouse. There will probably be a bitter taste in my mouth.

This place is a hidden gem. Stumbled across it with low expectations. Largely tourist free. Amazing cliff walks. Up and coming, watch this place grow.

Antiguo Leprosario Abades
Jul. 2019 • Couples
Built during WWII, this settlement was intended to house the victims of leprosy that claimed the lives of hundreds at the time. Around the time of completion, a cure for this disease was found and the site was abandoned and left to become a ghost town. A real tumbleweed feel when you visit the empty grafitti beautified buildings and derelict church.
The town sits on a hill overlooking a typical modern Canarian town with a lovely little beach and all, creating quite a macabre contrast.
But worth a visit if you’re looking for some variety from the beach resorts or the mountain trekking on El Teide.
An absolute must for seafood lovers is to drop by the (almost) neighboring town of Tajao and enjoy the many little restaurants that serve scrumptious fresh seafood from the grill. Él Rocas & Agua y Sal to name a few.

Nothing much but an abandoned church

Passed by and stopped for lunch in a small eatery facing the ocean. Ample parking. Were under the impression that it would be more interesting, as the description we received was about an abandoned town.

We only discovered this location because friends of ours who are residents took us there. Built by the Spanish government to accommodate the leprocy victims but fortunately was not then needed due to medical advances.
The experience can be unsettling but gives an enlightening insight in to the past The location is not easy to find yet close to tourist areas. I know that the site has been used for film location, and while we were there the Spanish armed forces were involved in manoeuvres, great to watch.
The site has been abandoned and is falling into disrepair, a shame. Great place to take pictures.

Not much here

A small beach with a huge amount of car park space. The village has about 8 untidy and unappealing bars selling dubious food and a small supermarket, certainly not worth a visit, we rented a villa here for 2 weeks which was good for visiting the rest of the island but after a couple of days stopped going to village didn’t find it very friendly or clean

A small quiet village with plenty of diving etc. Visited for a weekend, and was a very quiet place to stay.
