About
There aren’t many places that gather as many areas of interest for the cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote as Cueva de los Verdes, a unique mythological-looking cave, full of legends and extraordinary landscape and beauty. It came about after the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona, and it’s one of the most impressive hidden wonders in the depths of Lanzarote. It was used as a hideout by the locals who needed shelter to protect themselves from invasions and attacks of pirates coming from the north of Africa during the 16th and 17th Centuries. In the 19th Century, it became a must for travellers, experts and European scientists due to the uniqueness of this volcanic territory, named after a family that kept their cattle in the area, the story goes

- June ASurrey, United Kingdom2,755 contributionsWonderful colours and different formationsThese saves really are gorgeous - you can come of course under your own steam either with or without a car but it was easier for me to use a tour bus. A lot of people get the hump about such busses jumping the queue as they see it but the reality is that they book their time slots and these have to be adhered to. I have visited many different caves in different parts of the world and these really are stunning - and quite vast. The colours are spectacular with the reflections in the water around the edges and the different rock formations and shapes - a good camera as well as good boots are strongly recommended.Visited February 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 November 2023
- Traindriver86Caterham, United Kingdom71 contributionsUnforgettable and UnmissableAbsolutely incredible, wish we could of spent longer down in the caves walking slower and in a smaller group. I would love to walk through alone and take it all in. A stark reminder of natures power and our very small blip of time on this earth. A very humbling experience. Some small gaps and narrow stairs, mostly a tarmac path leads you through.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 December 2023

Be ready for ducking & wear comfortable foot wear but you will be amazed. The more you go in the more it surprises you. Truly worth a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023
- papillon2020Brisbane, Australia700 contributionsFascinating VisitThis was a fascinating look at a unique formation of caves as well as sitting and enjoying the caves. In addition, while there wasn't anything there when we were there, there's a lovely cave theatre where various events are staged. Strangely, there is also an underground club which operates on the weekends. Apparently, you can't get there on your own but need to do it as part of a tourVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 December 2023
- Trail158012495441 contributionMust seeMust see! Access only allowed with guided tour. We got there for 10am and joined 1st tour which was in Spanish and English and some French too. We had our 4 and 6 year olds with us and had no issues whatsoever. Our guide Christina was very knowledgeable and funny. She was also very attentive to our boys. The cave is very impressive and I preferred it to Jameos del Agua.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2023
- 👩⚕️ driver 1United Kingdom13 contributionsamazing - you MUST see this !Read about the caves on our morning of our last day in Costa Teguise. And wow - followed up with booking online (no guarantee you will get on , but in Jan was ok it seemed. or you could do orgaiised tour but we did not have that long ). Took a taxi (approx 35 euros each way) that hotel ordered for us . got on the 11 am tour. DO THIS TOUR ! Its amazing. And nice as there is literally nothing else there (ie not touristy gift shop etc, but yes toilets). Stunning and such a top tip for your stay in lanzarote .Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024
- John M7 contributionsGreat.Great trip. I'm v v v scared of heights so was worried about shear drops and stairwells with a drop on one side. But.. not too much of that. I'm really bad, but apart from from sweaty palms, I managed fine, keeping to the side on pathways etc. Tour guides were great. Wonderful, interesting tour. Some steps to undertake etc, but the v elderly lady in our group with two hinking poles, managed it, if a little slower than the rest. If you are an an extremely claustrophobic or anxious person, make sure you have a hand to hold onto.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 March 2024

My son is 8 so was able to hold his own with all the steps, uneven surfaces, pool of water with no barrier, low ceilings etc. Id have been much more nervous if I had my 5 year old with me. It was so interesting and unique, it really is worth a visit if you don’t have mobility difficulties.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2024
- Roseanne SDublin, Ireland22 contributionsSpectacular experienceSpectacular experience. Very friendly, passionate and experienced guide. Special experience /surprise at the end of the tour that had everyone in our tour group mind blown! This is an absolute must. This is a bit of trek through volcanic made tunnels and a hike to get back to the surface level, so I wouldn’t consider it suitable for the elderly or children or if you are very overweight/out of shape. Was breathing heavy after that hike!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024

The cave itself is very beautiful to see. Lighting is done well. However they paved the path (they paved on top of the beautiful lava flow, which you can not see anymore) and the music is horrible (why is there even music?) and very disturbing! Why ruin the beauty of a normally silent cave with these sounds?
The guide leads you to small paths, watch your head! The path itself is nice to walk. But because the group is so big, there is a traffic jam the whole route. If you are the last, the guide already starts to talk when everybody is not yet there. When you are the first, the guide walks very fast so there is no time to look around. It would be so great to have time to stand still and look around (and not on the place you are forced to because the group is moving so slow) and be able to take your time to see all the beauty they are so proud of (and where you pay for). Instead, the group is way too big to be able to do this. On the most beautiful part, a water pool that looks like a mirror, you are not allowed to take pictures. Then they say that is because it is a secret and they throw a stone in it. The act like throwing a stone in water is very special, they say, people need to line up for it, which takes a lot of time. I know how it looks when you throw a stone in the water, that is no secret to me.
So actually a lot of time is wasted and could be spend much better if the groups were not so big. 50 people is way too much to be really be able to enjoy the cave. Groups of 10 maximum would be better, with people that all understand the same language so you don't have to wait until the story in the other language is finally finished. I would pay more for it if I would really have time to look around and see it all.
All in all very disappointing. Not the cave itself, which is very beautiful, but the organisation :(.

Dear Walmerbee,
We regret not having fulfilled your expectations during your visit to the Cave of the Greens.
There are few places that concentrate as many points of interest for the cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote as the Cueva de los Verdes, a mythological aura cave, full of legend and full of landscape features of extraordinary beauty and uniqueness.
Formed as a result of the eruptive activity of the Corona Volcano, it is one of the most amazing wonders that hide the bowels of Lanzarote. Used as a hiding place for the population against the attacks and invasions of pirates from North Africa during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in the nineteenth
In the 60s of the last century, the Cabildo de Lanzarote turned to the majorero artist Jesús Soto, who would eventually become a close collaborator of Manrique, for the adaptation of this natural sanctuary of volcanic origin that has become the focus of attraction for thousands of visitors who yearn to discover their secret. Soto ordered the visit and displayed all his knowledge of the treatment of light and shadow to extract the luminosity of the stone and enhance the capricious forms that lava was leaving behind in its devastating path.
The color range of ocher, gray, black and reddish reign in this paradise of darkness and mimic themselves by the effect of light to draw grotesque landscapes and spectacular rock structures that surprise the visitor. Entering the Cave of the Greens is, without a doubt, making an initiatory journey to the center of the earth.
We will send a copy of your email to the address of the center, to study your proposal as we always try to work to improve the visitor experience.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
After all this information to make you better understand the meaning of this special Center we say goodbye hoping you enjoyed the visit to the island of Lanzarote.
Best regards

The caves themselves are stunning and we’d love to go back another time and perhaps have a different experience but our particular tour was spoiled by extremely badly behaved children. I’m not even sure you can blame the children because they were obviously bored and did not want to be there but the parents made no attempt to stop them from running around, climbing all over the rocks and shouting and screaming so that it was hard to hear what the tour guide was saying. This is very disappointing when you have people genuinely interested in the area. At one point, our tour guide did have to say something but even at that point, the parents seem to take no responsibility whatsoever.
Due to the pandemic, smaller groups of 20 were going down at a time. Even this felt like too many in such an enclosed space but everybody was wearing a mask apart from the children! There was a wait of about 20 minutes until a large enough group had accumulated and again this is not great if you happen to be a parent of an extremely bored child who quite clearly does not want to be there.
The tour lasts about half an hour and although the guides are very knowledgeable they obviously have a lot of information to get through and in places it felt rushed and he was talking extremely fast so it was hard to hear everything he was saying, particularly with the screaming going on. They speak everything in very fast Spanish first and then repeat it in English but again, it seems rushed and in those echoey caves, you do not grasp everything that’s being said. Perhaps under normal circumstances you could wear an audio headset but during the pandemic, this would not be an option. We’re not even sure if this is offered as an option but it would have helped.
The caves were wonderful and even have a stage and seating for concerts (pre pandemic) the acoustics must be fabulous! Definitely worth a visit, preferably without screaming children.

This was my favourite attraction in Lanzarote. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because we had to queue in the sun for a long time even though we went at the recommended time and bought tickets in advance. Having said that it was worth the wait! The ticket includes a guided tour through a kilometre inside the cave. The guide spoke English and Spanish and was very friendly. The cave was really impressive, you descend 30 metres into the cave and go through various chambers. The guide explains about the cave formation and its geology. If you have mobility problems it might not be for you though, as you have to walk for a kilometre including some crouching.

The caves were very interesting, but the organisation was not very good. We had to queue down some steps in the sunshine and were then told that we would have to wait 15 minutes before we could pay our entry fee. I asked if I could seek shade in the ticket booth and was allowed to do so. However, along came a busload of trippers, who took precedence over the rest of us. When we paid our entry fee we then had to wait another at least 30 minutes before our tour started. It would have been good if there was signage at the top of the steps detailing when the next tour is due to take place. Some people were not able to seek shade when they were waiting for the tour. The caves were not very well lit and the guide had a small torch. Also, it was difficult to hear any of the commentary, particularly if you were at the back of the tour. Perhaps a written leaflet would have helped.

Amazing caves formed by the action of lava flowing away from the volcano. These are beautiful natural features, not often found. But here mother nature provides a fantasic example into some of the workings of a volcano!

It is a lava tunnel with light and sound installations that greatly enhance its beauty and allow you to take very beautiful photos.
Price 10 euros. Expensive but doable. There is a long queue so I recommend the 3-5pm time slot and you enter with a guide which is a nice added value.

Beautiful tunnels and guide will tell you history about the lava tunnels. Downside is the amount of ducking you must do to get through some areas but also the amount of stairs you have to walk up and down. But they do warn you and it’s all natural so not much can be done
Amazing photography area and breathing taking as you are 40 metres underground and there’s an area closed to the public that is 5km from the concert hall that is in a actual volcano.
Concert hall is beautiful and the acoustic of music sounded amazing
They say it takes 45-50 minutes to walk it, which I mean you get to stop, take pictures, hear about the history of how it was made and be amazed by it.

The Cueva de los Verdes is a lava tunnel which you explore in company with a guide. The entry fee is included in a discounted entry ticket covering either 4 or six sites and available on-line. When we bought the six site ticket, we were advised to arrive early, so we were in the car park 15 minutes before the first tour and had only a short wait before the tour started. When we exited an hour later there was a lengthy queue.
The visit consists of an hour´s walk through the lava tunnel and you will learn about the geology and formation of the tunnel - it was very enjoyable and a worthwhile experience!

A beautiful cave system that takes around an hour to explore with a guide. You will be part of a larger group exploring the caves. You cannot go and explore without a guide. The walk inside is stunning, following the flow of lava from 20,000 years ago. The guides are very good and ours spoke in both Spanish and English. Free parking and toilets are available. The cost was €10.

Beautiful cave, great place BUT the staff/tour guide was horrible. She was in a rush the entire time, rushed us through the cave, kept singling out people if they were stuck in the back of the group due to the pace of the people in the front. The group size was WAY bigger than should have been (guess they are trying to compensate for being closed due to COVID) but it was really unfair, barely had enough time to take pictures or hear anything of what she was saying. Know your facts before visiting if you expect to learn any history on this tour. Otherwise the cave is great but not the staff.

Probably morning to avoid queues and miss bus tours.
Queues do move regularly and it's worth a wait to visit - have done the tour a few times can't remember waiting for ages, maybe I was just lucky?

My Spanish isn't great. I think your question us can you visit with a baby?
If the child is very small, quiet (!) and going to be in a breast pouch then it would be possible. The guide needs silence from the group to be heard, at points on the route you have to bend down a lot so a backback would not suit and toddlers or young children would be bored. Hope that helps!

Yes, I went with 3 under 5 and although my youngest didn't get alot out of it she wasn't bored, she enjoyed feeling the rocks and being in the dark caves. My eldest was a bit nervous, I think she thought we were going on a real life bear hunt. It is aboit an hour long so they got a little restless ten minutes or so before the end but they enjoyed the ducking and spiral stairs and tunnels etc.
