A short walk from the cruise terminal. Columbus and his men allegedly prayed at this ancient church before setting off for the New World. This really is a beautiful church with a beautiful altar and a hand-carved wooden ceiling.

Lovely large church especially for the wall painting celebrating the islanders repelling ‘our’ ie the British attempt to invade in 1743. Some lovely decoration - paint on wood - in side chapels and ceiling. Unusual wooden enclosure for font with gallery over.

The Cathedral is lovely. The murals are exceptional, and it is very serene. The church has numerous side niches for various saints, and these are perfect for the church. There is also a mural of Columbus' three ships which were built on La Gomera in 1492. The high altar is ornate, and beautiful. A lovely place to worship or have a moments devotion.

As with most Canary Island towns, the church is always the centre of the town & often spectacular.
This one is nice & with lovely wooden doors & ceiling.
Ok for a quick look.

Saturday 16th October and we visited San Sebastián, the Capital on the Island, where a visit to the beautiful old Church is a must.

Located on Calle Real, a main street, it is not difficult to find or to overlook.

We crossed over the expansive courtyard in front of the Church and entered through the middle, largest of the 3 arched doorways. It was topped by a small stone bell tower with it's two bells.

Wooden carved benches form an aisle with a stone floor which lead Visitors to the main altar. This consists of a small colourful altar table in front of a more lavish altar behind it. The centerpiece is a very ornate tabernacle, flanked on either side by large gilded candelabras, with a statue in an elaborate recess on both side. A large crucifix hangs above all of this and is topped with a red fabric canopy. We spent a few minutes stood in front of the altar just staring, trying to absorb it all.

There are a number of smaller altars, along the side walls of the Church. These are no less grand than the main altar and certainly worth a look at.

Large paintings of religious figures also adorn the walls.

Impressive red stone archways support the plain, in comparison with the rest of the Church, wooden ceiling.

Everywhere we looked in the Church our eyes were drawn to another beautiful feature, perhaps a painting, ornate wood carving or a statue.

It was a real treat for the eyes and the soul walking around the Church. Before we left the Church, we sat in one of the benches and got lost in our thoughts in the serene atmosphere.

Well worth a short visit but not spectacular in any sense. Intimate atmosphere as to be expected in contrast to what you may find in more cathedral like churches.

During our stroll through San Sebastian de La Gomera, we were drawn by this beautiful old church. The architecture is simple, but inside there are a great number of valuable artifacts on display. Just the place to spend a moment of reflection and interior peace.

This is an old church situated in the centre of the capital of the Canary island of La Gomera. It has some intersing altar pieces and shrines, and an old mural commemorating a historic sea battle.
