Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you hurry along, you will miss the niche in the Portal de Sant Roc (great Medieval depiction of the patron saint) or you will miss the coat of arms over town hall (cannon, balls, and swords) and you will miss the sculptures in the public areas depicting Picasso-esque horses or the fleshy bodied "Mediterrania" sculpture.

Hurry by at your peril. Miss the purpose of your visit. The choice is yours.

And the churches, what a treasure of artistic delights. Walk slowly, stop often, and do go into those churches.

Old Town seems to be on the upper-city level so take the ascensor (elevator) to the upper level from the port and search for the last remnant of the gates. This is pretty much ground-zero for the Old Town.

We visited for a day on our 2 week holiday. We took the direct bus from Cala Galdana which was probably easier and cheaper than driving in. The outskirts of the town are not that nice, but once you are in the centre it is a different story - lovely narrow streets, elegant architecture and lovely shops. Everything that you would expect from an historic Spanish town. The market was quite lively too. It is not that big and can easily be walked around in a couple of hours. We chose a cafe (there are many) ordered a drink and watched the world walk by ... a great way to while away a few hours.

Just back from the Placa des Born and encompassing the town’s museum, cathedral and the shopping area (Ses Voltes) amongst a number of other attractions is the old centre. Full of winding streets that may lead you to another square or someone’s private garden.

You can walk through the old town area and continually find a different route across it. Often you’ll come across an area that you previously saw from another angle. It almost has a spider web feel. Yes, if you wander around you’ll come across the odd dead end but just as frequently you’ll find another beautiful building or a nice square to stop and have a drink or one of the islands awesome pastries. It’s a place that is best if you just go with the flow and, yes, get lost in.

Recommended as part of a visit on a non-market day if you really want to immerse yourself.

The charming historic centre of Ciutadela de Menorca is small but very beautiful and features some interesting architecture.I would recommend to visit the small side-streets and alley's as well because there is more to explore than just the charming main shopping street "SES VOLTES"between the port-"Plaza des Born" and" Plaza de ses Palmeres".Plaza de libertat is one of the fewer visited area's due to it's hidden location.
Ciutadela de Menorca was build by the Carthaginians and in the 4th century was seat of a bishop.
During"moorish-Islam rule it was named "Medina el Jezira"and"Medina Menurqa".
During the "reconquista"king Alfonso III re-established christianity and in 1558 Ciutadela de Menorca was decimated by a Turkish invasion. Most of the architecture in the historic centre had to be rebuild after 1558 and mainly dates from the 16th,17th,18th and 19th centuries.Between 1708-1756 and 1763-1802 Menorca was a British possession. The British moved the capital to Mahon-Mao;Ciutadella de Menorca became the second city;seat of the Spanish nobility.
Many buildings feature the local honey-colored sandstone.

Much of the centre of Ciutadella could be classed as 'The Old Town' but for the purposes of this review I have restricted the definition to the area inside the main roads Avinguda de la Constitució, Avinguda de Jaume I el Conqueridor, and Carrer de sa Muradeta, whilst excluding Plaça des Born and Plaça dels Pins

Having visited dozens of countries and hundreds of cities, Ciutadella would rank up there in my Top 5. Lots of beautifully preserved old buildings, lovely tree lined plazas and squares, very clean streets and pavements (apart from the dog poo!!), friendly residents and workers, with lots to see and do and enjoy

Although it has been cleaned up for the tourist trade you can still get a hint of the original in the narrow streets. Plenty of bars, restaurants and "tourist tat" shops,

The old town of Ciutadella is a wondeful warren of lanes and alleys full of cafes, restaurants and quirky shops with a different view round every corner , theres plenty of tourist sites to see as well , the cathedral , Ses Voltes , St Augustines Seminary and the myriad small churches that dot the area but our best experience was just strolling the paths and taking in all the sights and sounds , a delightful way of spending a day while on Menorca.
