- Bertie1224Northamptonshire, United Kingdom1,440 contributionsBusy bustling marketYou might not buy anything but it is worth a stroll to peruse the varied stalls. Listening carefully it is filled with locals so has the feel of a genuine market. The fish stalls are a sight to behold. Fish I could not name, oysters, lobsters and mussels. If you were self catering you’d be spoilt for choice. The fruit and veg stalls always look so fresh and on a different level to the uk. There are some touristy stalls, fridge magnets etc. If you want one of those buy it from the bag sellers in the harbour for €1.50. Cheapest I saw in Palma! This place is worth a visit as you wander in to the old town.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023

Many locals doing shopping - but most stores offer similar fare.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 January 2024
- Heike G4 contributionswe loved the taste & presentationBest organic fish (Raw and/or cooked) at KRAKEN, BESTIES DE MAR. It is a bar tender with perfect attention and service by Nacho & Raffaello. Try the mussels with red curry sauce and/or the tuna fish, all prepared in front of you.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024
- Elizabeth PDurham, United Kingdom85 contributionsA must-visit for seafood lovers!Probably our favourite stop in Palma! We pulled chairs up at mercat negre stall and were served about 5 dishes each of fresh fish with gorgeous wine, all paired with amazing service and atmosphere. Such a bargain as well - it was roughly €35 each (in the UK this would easily be £80 each!!!)Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 June 2024
- trinevosSandnes, Norway219 contributionsFantastic market, big portionsLots of choices, big place, great seafood. We had the small portion of calamari at one of the stalls, unable to finish although amazing- portion size was big! Would go here daily if I lived in Palma. Go visit!!!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 July 2024

Loads of places to sit and snack at and the food looked wonderful. Well worth a visit bit more it closed mid afternoonVisited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2024
- ChrisK3West Yorkshire, United Kingdom1,124 contributionsSecond Time aroundVisited the market many years ago, this time around it seemed a little different with a supermarket upstairs and lots of tapas stalls selling a wide range of food including sushi and Dim Sum along with the regular Spanish dishes. Still well worth a visit and I think the food stalls add to the enjoyment of a visit. The supermarket upstairs also offered some good bargins, I found a great deal on Tanqueray gin. All areas were spotlessly clean.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 August 2024

The fruit, some tropical, was especially pleasing. And I even bought some things, even though we were not in town for long.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 September 2024

Some places have seats to eat, we bought a take away and sat out side, people watching at it's best.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2024

On the place with the same name, the now 70 years old Mercat de l'Olivar (olive grove) with over 100 stalls is considered to be the biggest covered market in Mallorca. It can be found near Plaza España with the Estacion Intermodal, but is also quite close to the Plaza Mayor. Renewed several times since its first opening it is an airy and clean place full of light.
The choice of anything edible is enormous, be it vegetables, fruits, meat, cheese, breads or spices. For obvious reasons the fish and seafood gets sold in a separate hall, very big too. In between there are tapas bars. On the way to the 'primera planta' with the supermarket 'Mercadona' are toilets.
What especially intrigued me here was the discovery of a vegetable I had never seen before, a 'Zucchiolo'. To buy it I first had to get a ticket with a number. This is the case at most busy stalls. Back home I had my wife prepare this completely round vegetable after we read about it in the internet. Apparently it was developed in Almeria and is only on the markets since last November, thus less than a month ago.
It can be eaten raw and cooked and for me it was like a mixture between a zucchini and a cucumber. It comes in three colors: dark green, light green and yellow.

Not cheap but a lot of variety, especially fish. Pictures with prices attached. Locals shop mostly at supermarkets like Mercadona or Lidl, prices are more affordable.
It is a busy place so pace yourself, live the vibe of a busy market. You can get a snack or a drink inside or in the plaza in front of the market. Not a must see place but why not if you are in the area, which you will probably be as is close to Placa Major and Sant Miguel, major tourist strip.

Last visited here in 2012, when staying in Cala D'Or, and had the most wonderful & inexpensive Tapas meal ever This time we were in Alcudia and caught the bus into Palme for a day out, making sure that one of our first stops was at this wonderful Market, which is only a short walk from the main train/bus interchange at Placa Espana. We were not disappointed. The place has had quite a makeover since we were last here, but lost none of its charm or atmosphere. The displays of Seafood, Fruit & Veg, etc, on its stalls are second to none, and many of the numerous eateries have gone quite upmarket. We even found the same place we eat last time we were here, Bar del Peix and once again had a lovely Tapas lunch, which cost us just short of 12E, with drinks. It's just a great place to walk round, look at the wonderful displays, people watch & soak in the atmosphere. A visit to Palma, without a call into this Market is a day unfulfilled. Don't miss it

If you are in Palma for the first time take an hour and stop looking at old stones, churches, convents ( as lovely as they are) get away from the tourist trap Tapas bars and amble over to a real working urban market. The bounty of the farm and the sea and the splendors of balesric cuisine are all here. Make your own, fresh, delicate, and much more affordable tapas choices right from the vendors! Relish in the mountains of fresh balearic seafood! If you want sit down with the locals and enjoy croquettes, skewers, and a myriad of seafood tapas or if you like REALLY fresh sushi!
No need to go upstairs ( shops and standard supermarket) unless you are in a B&B and need to stock up on staples.

Covered market in Palma, we wanted to have a snack at lunchtime and we succeeded very well at the Ván Aleixandre counter, platter with excellent ham, cheese and croutons, 2 medium beers on tap (EXCELLENT Spanish beer, ask for advice) served by the glass frozen 22 euros. I had picked up some excellent figs at a fruit and vegetable stand and we had a really tasty snack (standing). However, inside the market there are also solutions where you can sit, including a restaurant. It's crowded because there are a lot of locals, but for me it was worth the stop.

We enjoyed browsing the amazing produce but when it got to lunchtime we struggled to find something that we could eat there in the market. Some stalls have a few seats or little bars, but all were taken by about noon. The overpowering smell of fish from the fish stalls was also quite off-putting so we bought some takeaway food and ate it on a bench in the children's playground outside. The market is also one of just three places we saw in Palma that had public toilets (the others were the car park under the Parc de la Mar and the Mercato de Santa Catalina, a smaller market in the West of the city which we preferred).

I have to admit, I liked the market, but the behavior of one of the vendors took away a lot from the experience when she started talking to us in a peasant way because the child was holding a wrapped fruit that we wanted to buy. She started teaching us about child rearing and behavior just because (again) the child grabbed a wrapped piece of fruit because we wanted to buy it. Luckily, we managed to keep our cool and our good manners, we apologized from the "lady"and asked the child to put the fruit back and after the apology we told the lady that we have no intention of shopping here anymore. The lesson of the case is that, besides the fact that the market is good, jerks are unfortunately everywhere.

If you are a foodie and like to see vibrant colours and lots of fresh produce from bakery to butcher, greengrocers to fish shop this market is for you. Its both full of tourists and majorcans with a buzz of busy businesses that are years in the making. There are lovely smells and busy stalls with people having coffee, tapas and/or wine - despite the early morning! Fish stalls were a bit empty but this may be due to the day or time of day we visited.

The Mercat de l'Olivar is the largest and most popular market hall in Palma. It is located in the historic city center and is just a 2-minute walk from Plaza España. All kinds of delicacies are on offer here - from fruit and vegetables to fresh fish and seafood to ham, sausage and cheese specialties. We ended the tour with a drink and a few tapas in the "Bar Peix". Delicious!

Hi I’m in Palma for my birthday on Wednesday 22nd August.. I love markets !! But is this one only a fish market ? Or is there other kind of local products sold etc cakes/pastry’s/clothing items/gifts ...
Thankyou Georgia :)

Hi Georgia,
There are cakes, pastry and sweet in the main food market not clothes. There are a couple of shops in downtown selling gifts in good price too. Clothes shops are more or less the same brand as in the UK, some cheaper Chinese shops in town may have some cheaper beach wearers. Have a great time in Palma. 😊 Maggie

Hi Georgia, the market has everything. Fish, meat, vegetables, fruit, sweets, confectionery, pastries (try the Ensaimada!) and several Tapas bars. I don't remember any shops selling clothing, though. You could buy presents in some of the deli type shops.
